Hi Just sitting here and the wife smelt burning smell, went into office and the desk top has no life to it and stinking of burning plastic type smell.

Unplug it and disconect all cables and it seems like the power supply had fried itself, took the side off and there is a box that the power lead plugs into and loads of wires coming out the back of it that goes to everything inside the box:thinking:

Can this part be replaced or is it a case of a new PC??

Part number on it is HEC-300VP-2RE

The desk top is a MESH and they are no longer around and its only about 2 years old.

Thanks

spike

PSUs are readily available and easy to fit either yourself or a computer builder. Just ensure you buy a unit with ample reserves for your set up.

MESH seem to be alive and well, and living at http://www.meshcomputers.com/

Yep you can get a psu from places like Scan.co.uk Microdirect.co.uk etc.

The psu will have something along the likes of 450W which is the rating. Make sure you get the same or better.

Ok thaks for that Bob will have a look and see what I can source

Thanks

Hi Chris the one thats in is only 300w, so I take it going higher wattage will not do it any harm???

Your local PCWorld will have them.

Going higher than your original PSU may well be of benefit. Think along the lines of running a Morris 1000 at 75 mph for days on end against a Ferrari at the same speed and time. Which will last longest?

OK, I know that sounds er ... corny, but the principal is the same. There can also be an added bonus in that the supply may be more consistent and thereby be kinder to the components it powers.

I have never heard of the brand so I cannot comment on the quality. However, the price does concern me a bit.

Well the Corsair and Coolermaster versions, (there are several other brands), are around twice the price. I don't know if you get twice the quality, but I tend to steer clear of the bargain basement things in any sphere of purchasing. As the saying goes, "buy cheap, buy twice".

The 12cm will be the fan size.

I've had a couple of PSUs go on me in the past and I've been fortunate it hasn't taken out anything else when they have gone. Some of the cheaper PSUs aren't capable of the power they claim and their quality is a bit dubious.

I have to say, I spend "a lot" on my PSUs. I bought 2 the last time a PSU went and paid £100 each for 460W PSUs - partly because they are silent, partly because they are modular (no mess of cables out the back) and partly because I believe you get what you pay for in PSUs (and I read the reviews). I've heard all sorts of horror stories of PSUs taking out motherboards and disks when they let go. I'm not sure if I'm being overly cautious and wasting money or I can sit smug in a few years time knowing I did the right thing....

No you just posted before me, it was meant for yellow belly.
Thanks for your post though most helpful. I just hope it has not fried anything else but I will not know till I put a new psu in it.

Thanks

Steep I take it your rich LOL

The last time I bought one at PCW it was more expensive than online but not by much and was worth it for not having to wait for delivery.

My current PSU for reference came from Aria.co.uk and is a Corsair modular Silent dadedah...

Steep we do not have PC world in Guernsey though so it would cost me more than a new PC to collect from there lol.

After doing some investigation I am starting to see that, just ordered a 500w corsair, hope the rest of the pc is ok now and no further damage is done

After having a couple of failure with psu,I spend a bit money at got a couple of powerful ones, well worth the outlay :)

300w is fine in most low end systems. The problem occurs when that psu is a bargain basement unit where the rated wattage is rarely what the unit is capable. But I suspect what has happened here is quality of parts inside the psu rather than anything.

A good brand 480w should see you good.

Nothing wrong with CIT power supplies, I have a 600w one in my pc and it gives me no problems.
A review sample of 1 doesn't mean they are generally reliable....

The Moggie. Don't know if it applies to all models or even any of the most recent ones, but at lesat some Ferraris tend to need serious servicing (e.g. camshaft replacement as a service item  ) on a regular basis. The A series in the Minor will go on forever on oil and filter changes.

Lets hope that the PSU didnt take out the motherboard etc etc!!

I bought a 500w corsair last night with all the advice given on here, I felt the one in the system was not good enough and did not want the same problems so £52 on a new one seems reasonable.

It will be here friday hopefully till then its the laptop for me, on another note, I sent an email to mesh about getting another one off them but a better spec last before i bought the one i did.
A guy from Mesh called me today to ask if I had gotten sorted, i told him what I had boiught and he was very pleasant and siad to not hessitate in getting touch if I needed any advice on installing the new one, and wished me well saying that there might be a very slight chance that it might have cooked something else but he hoped it had not.
Very polite and not pushy in any way, I will buy another pc from them but would spec it myself next time lol.

I will be changing it myself as had a better look today and its just a case of swapping connectors over, I am pc illiterate at times but mechanics i can do lol.

Thanks again for all the advice, just love this forum, first post just after 10pm and within half hour I am all sorted and got a new one on order, you just cannot beat this place at times.

Beware of static when fiddling with the psu connections, you can unwittingly roger something if your not earthed.
