i have just bought a dell monitor when installing it dell recomend connection using the dvi cable my computer only has a vga socket which is what i used to connect my monitor.
my question is does a dvi connection make any difference to image editing or is this just for gaming or blue ray playback.
i know you can buy vga dvi adapters but do i need one.

It's well worth getting a video card that supports dvi (or even displayport) as the quality will be a lot better than running analogue only.

DVI is a digital transmission medium. It gets turned into analogue when it is at the monitor. VGA is analogue from the PC to the monitor so some fine detail will be lost at high resolutions as there is no precise timing informaton to tell the monitor where to lock onto the pixel.

Whilst a VGA->DVI may seem like an ideal solution, it isn't as you go digital->analogue->digital->analogue. At each conversion something is lost. I'd stick with a decent VGA cable unless you are going long distances with it...

You'd be far better off getting any cheap video card and connecting via DVI directly (assuming you can fit a video card to your PC).

thanks guys will look in to getting my pc upgraded so i can connect via dvi.
