This post has caused some stir on another forum and most people didn't agree with what I thought, so thought it may be interesting to see what you all think too :)

Would you be annoyed if a postman/delivery man tried to open your door without knocking or ringing the doorbell first? We had one this morning who obviously saw both cars on the drive were gone, thought everyone was out, and tried to open the front door to deliver something that needed to be signed for. If he rang the doorbell however he would have had the door opened by either my brother or myself.

Parents weren't happy, we rang the company who delivered it and equally they were angry that this had happened. We called the company because I didn't catch the guy at the time.

Apparently this kind of thing is normal practice in other places and people would be more than happy to have the postman open the front door of his own accord to deliver something.

Discuss?

I would't be happy and the guy would certainly know I wasnt happy... But call his company? no way!

I think some people would be happy for a regular postman, who they knew, to do it. In fact a friend of mine does so. However they have an outer and an inner door and he only comes in the outer door.

No-one can open my front door without a key so it couldnt happen to me. Do you leave your door unlocked if you are out? Or is it just an outer door like my friends?

He should have knocked first anyway.

It is an inner door, we always leave it locked now but it has happened in the past that a postman (not a regular postie) has opened the door when it's been unlocked. We used to have an outer door in our old house and it wasn't a problem for them to open that one, but todays delivery guy tried to open the inner door without knocking.

I wish my postman would open my door and leave parcels! I work in an office at the other end of the house and never hear the door ring, so always end up having to go and collect parcels.

Our postman sometimes opens the inner glass door and leaves mail on the mat - better than the eejit that was his holiday replacement, who tried to stuff a parcel through the letterbox on the open stormdoor, which was hard against the wall and totally destroyed it :annoyed:

god. i wouldnt dream of doing that.
i regularly deliver to private houses(admitedly, palletised deliveries.)
but i wouldnt dream of trying someones door.
ring the bell, hammer on the door, but not just open it.
PARTICULARLY if there were no cars in the drive.
if someone walked straight in at my house they'd come face to face with Tyson anyway.
alsation husky cross, who enjoys scaring the sh## out of strangers.
delivery drivers arent imune from being dishonest , by the way.

Why would he open the door if he needed a signature and he thought that no one was home? What difference does that make - there's still no one to sign for it.

Seems to me like he had more in mind than parcel delivering. I'd contact the police and let them know - even if there is no evidence, he may have done it to other houses.

how do you know... if as you now tell us you where all out..

Nope never said I was out, just said that if we go out the door is always locked. Today we were in as it says in the first post.

Finally 2 people who see where I'm coming from... thankyou! I seriously thought I was going mad judging by what other people have said.

so you didnt catch him but you where in ..thus still same question.. how do you know he tried the door?

I'd be annoyed - and the postman would probably find me in some state of undress

I do house visits on people I know well (I'm a midwife) and I would never dream of just walking in or trying the door, even if I suspected they were home.

there only two doors i will try without knocking, my own and my mom and dads! im surprised people leave there doors unlocked in truth:thinking:

Sounds a bit dodgy - maybe in a small rural area where the postie is also a regular, but not 'in town' where the delivery personnel may vary...
And outer-door OK, inner door definitely not.

We have contacted our local post-office (in Germany) to allow delivery of items addressed to us to be left with our downstairs neighbours if we're out - otherwise they go back to the central depot and have to be paid for (additional to the original postage) upon collection.

This is quite amusing,I moved from London to a rural area in southern Ireland and the place is quite layed back here the postman has been the same since we moved here,He's maybe missed 10 weeks from that period off the top of my head,I've noticed if our front door is open(wide open keeping the house cool) he'll put the parcel/letter in and close the door,If we did complain I don't think anything would be done about it and really he's doing us a favour so the next person along won't see a parcel sitting in the door way and pick it up.

If a postie or delivery man tried that on at our place, he would be met by a black Tipperary Bitza......

That is out of order. If I caught anyone trying my door they would be baseball batted instantly. And yes I do know that's a no-no in the eyes of the law. I just dont give a flying ****.

If we are having a parcel delivered and we are in, we'll leave a note on the door saying to the postman "please come to 2nd door and knock" as we do have a doorbell but it doesnt work. If we're out we leave one saying "please take package to number 11" and then our lovely old neighbours will sign for it.

We live in the sticks and if we not in to receive a parcel or signed for post I either have to drive 15 miles to my depot to collect or arrange a redelivery.

Our regular postman uses his common sense so we do not mind if he signs something for us and either posts it or hides it somewhere safe.

Stands outside marcus' house and leaves a note "Please leave parcels with the nice man stood waiting on the corner" :D
