Yes
I tried to remove the original posts but couldn't. So when you delete posts, please leave a contact if you don't mind. Or maybe ask why there's two posts.

The OP double posted. AIUI the team was notified and a mod deleted a duplicate post (leaving just one) and used the function that sends a message to the person whose post was deleted explaining why. One of the pair of posts was left up. @dcash29 please explain if your perception of this was different.

I initially thought I had posted in the wrong forum, so I attempted to delete the post and re-submit it in a more appropriate section. Unfortunately, this resulted in two posts being created. Shortly after, I received a notification stating the post was deleted due to duplication, with no contact information or further guidance. It would be helpful if moderators offered some support or direction rather than sending out a generic message—especially when someone might genuinely need assistance.

Thanks for explaining. Sometimes forum tools are a bit of a blunt instrument, hence this situation. You can always reach out to one of the team (Lindsay, Sirch, Garry or myself) for help with this kind of thing if you need it. There's also the 'contact us' link at the bottom-right of every page and a Site Help And Support section at the very bottom of the list of different sections to the forum. Finally there's the possibility of reporting your own duplicate post and asking for help that way (see the report button, bottom left, below every individual post in a thread).

HTH :)

Thanks, AM. Yes, I eventually spotted it—initially, I was just scrolling through the menus. I think the main issue was that I assumed I could delete the original post, and only realised I couldn’t after reposting the second one. That said, I’ve always found certain aspects of the site a bit quirky, and in my view, they haven’t really improved over the years.

Regards,

I deleted the duplicate post and explained the reason. If it didn't identify me as the "culprit" then I'm sorry, I've not (yet:) been on the receiving end of this action so don't know the actual wording.

My reasoning is as explained, and I chose to remove the duplicate that was in 'Talk photography, mainly because it was the one that seemed to me to be in the wrong place, and secondly because your other thread had received a reply.

Admins and mods do our best to keep the site tidy and functional, and that sometimes involves deletions.

or, indeed, thread merges - for example if both threads had gained a reply or more, we'd have made the same "value judgements" as Garry detailed above, then merged the two threads to the one "in the correct area" - manually removing one of the "opening posts".

We don't just jump in willy-nilly to deal with these things - and - there's a couple of reasons why "delete post" options are not available to the general membership, one of which being that we've had people who take offence at something, then go on a rampage of deleting everything they've participated in - and - irritatingly, if you as the OP delete the thread, it deletes everything in the thread - including what can often be some interesting / valuable comments. For example, if someone decided to delete the first post in one of the massive "open threads" they could be taking out upwards of 30 pages of other peoples work.

As always - if you've any issue, its always best to use the "contact us" link and let us know, and we can give you a full explanation - there's ALWAYS a reason when we get involved - because, honestly, we realise that actually this place works best with a "light touch" and that normally we don't NEED to make that many interventions.
