Deleting images

Not sure if this should go in the PP section, if so please move.

I nearly always take both RAW and JPEG and when I am doing some testing of technique or kit I get a lot of shots that need to be binned as they didn't work or I have enough pictures of planes overhead or pigeons sitting on the fence. I download everything on my computer then, using windows preview, I view the images and cull the ones I don't need or want. However, that deletes the JPEG quite quickly but then I have to seek out the appropriate RAW image which is cumbersome and time consuming. Are there any tools out there to delete both JPEG and RAW together or is there another technique I should look at?
 
I used to do this but now don't bother with jpgs at all until saving the final, processed image. It is a pain this deleting process. What worked for me was to open two explorer windows, approximately the same size. If you look at the right hand side file, if the two file names are the same you didn't delete a jpg on that line. If different it's quick and easy to see which one you did delete. So you delete it and continue on to the next row of files. Hope this makes sense!!
 
Why do you have to 'seek out' the raws - aren't they sitting neatly alongside their attendant jpg's, all in date order?
 
I cull in a photo management app. On import jpg and raw versions are neatly stacked. And when I mark them to delete they both get deleted.

I wouldn't want to manage my photos myself through the operating system when there are great tools to do just that.
 
As I was writing the original question it struck me that I was more interested in an app of some description rather than changing my technique. @EdwardL using two explorers is so obvious I wish I'd thought of it. So, I've just spent a couple of hours going through my files and having a good cull - 20 plus gb!

@droj - I need to use a picture Viewer to check focus etc before deleting within the viewer

@dejongj - what is the photo management app called?

I'm teribble; I throw nothing away or delete anything. With my pictures I just load them onto my pc or lappy and basically do nowt with them. I'm running out of space on both machines (one is my works with about 3GB left!) so I had to do something. I do very little in terms of PP as I don't find the time - I get more of a kick out of capturing the image than displaying it anywhere.

The amount of time I've Google for an app or thought about it I could have written an app in that time - may still do that if I can remember how to cut code.

I signed up for the months trial of lightroom back end of last year but never got round to using it so that was a waste. Will have to find the next offer where it goes down to about £7/month and have a better play. Link bookmarked. Thx

I'd say this too. And some are free.

Forget any picture viewer provided within Windows - they are always crap. Graphics have never been a Microsoft strongpoint - even their GUI's look like they're designed by a committee ...

I've tried many a viewer (and I suspect I've tried Aperture as well) and I always seem to revert to the windows version.

Think I need to take a step back and think about what I am trying to achieve and adjust my technique if necessary.

I use FastStone, tell it to order alphabetically (or obey the Windows folder alphabetic ordering) then the RAW and Jpeg are right next to each other.
Deleting both takes a second from within Faststone, but that's two views and two deletes ... but as it is the fastest thing I've ever seen at viewing fullscreen photos the time is minimal.

Grab the Windows by its title bar and drag it to the left or right edge of the screen and it will snap into place.
