I want one of my own, with all my pictures on, on a nice black background and some slick navigation bits. But I don't have a clue really. html, css, php, java, flash: most of it goes way over my head.

So does anyone know any good guides / tutorials that will teach me what I need to know in order to build my website. Any books you can recommend? web editors? etc... anything!

Thanks in advance :)

You'd probably be better off as a starting point using a photography script of some kind.

www.hotscripts.com would be a good starting point, i'd probably go with a PHP script as they are fairly easy to use and understand.

I haven't installed any myself but a script would be the easiest and fastest way of doing it. You would just need a domain name and some webspace (with PHP and MySQL support).

Are you sure you want to code the site yourself?

I'd suggest looking at Gallery 2 or Coppermine if you want a gallery system.
If you want a content management system (CMS), then Drupal is a sensible option.
If you want to change the styles that come with any web publishing system, look at html, xhtml and css tutorials at w3schools.com.

A-ha! Good questions! I don't know what I want! I think I'd prefer to code it all myself though. This will be a learning exercise at the same time as being a create-me-an-image-site exercise, so the more I learn the better! Will take a look at w3schools ASAP

Do you have any prior knowledge or know the basics?

If not i'd hazard a guess that you'll get bored and install a script and modify it to suit as it's a steep learning curve. But IMO it's worth learning if you have the time and the patience.

One option is to use a website template. You can get some free templates or some very cheap ones which you can configure yourself. This generally shows how a page was created and you can muck about with it and learn at the same time.

Sometimes you're better off using tools to help you get your site made - eg CMS system such as Joomla or a gallery system such as Coppermine rather than the nitty gritty of building the site, but it depends how much time you want to devote to the construction and how much time you want to devote to content. Content is king...
