Due to the fantastic amount of interest being shown in this thread, I think it's well worth an update.
The mixture of rain, sleet and light snow that affected the south of the UK today was part of a "warm sector" wrapped around a small low pressure.
Once this low pressure moves into France during the course of tonight, the wind should start to become a "proper" north east feature. That's where the air will turn colder again, but more unstable in nature. That will allow convective (where the cloud bubble up) snow showers to rattle in from the North Sea to affect the eastern side of the UK.
As it stands, from 12 pm tomorrow, areas most at risk of heavy snow showers is Kent, Sussex, Essex, London, East Anglia, Norfolk and Rutland. There could be up to 10 cm of lying snow by the end of Friday. The north east of England and the eastern side of Scotland will also be at risk of snow, but to a lesser extent.
There will also be widespread hard frosts in most areas by night as temperatures fall to as low as -10 C by Friday night.
Then this weekend, all eyes will be towards the north as a cold front advances southwards in from the North Pole. That is most likely to bring more persistent snow to Scotland by Saturday.

Pretty much what I have had all morning, cloudy now but does not look like rain let alone snow - saying that the wind is picking up a bit so it will probably be on its way!

Have gathered some more data and got myself up to speed on things.
It looks like, as expected, the eastern spine of the UK has been peppered with short brief burst of snow, hail, and ice pellets type showers all day today but no laying snow has been reported. A few of those showers made it's way towards the western side of the UK.
Now it looks like Kent and East Anglia is going to be hit by 10 to 20 cms of laying snow tonight and into tomorrow as a small low pressure system centered over Denmark begins to roll towards the south east of UK in the next few hours . . . but I MAY be overplaying things a bit, while at the same time I'm not writing it off yet.
If you fancy keeping an eye on things yourself, here's a handy rain radar. Very good as it's colour coded for different types of precipitaton (blues for rain and red for snow). http://www.raintoday.co.uk
Even if you didn't get the snow today, temperatures WILL be at freezing level tonight over the bulk of the UK so the risk of widespread frost and icy patches still remains.
Where-ever you drive, be safe!

Well, it seems I was spot on with my forecast as many parts of the south east of the UK recieved a right pasting, with up to a foot of snow in places! Some more is expected today for the same area, and may even continue into tomorrow but to a much lesser extent.
Then it's Scotland's turn to get the white stuff as the wind turns more northernly over the weekend. It looks like there is a breakdown to milder and wetter conditions as the Atlantic wakes up just before . . . surprise, surprise, Christmas. But even then certainty is quite low on that one. It's going to be such a close thing in terms of snow falling on Christmas Day.
Ironically, my hometown, Folkestone which I thought was in the best position for it is remaining wet and snowless! I won't lie and say I'm well gutted. It turned out to be a marginal event where places at 50 meters or less above sea level got sleet or rain.
Perhaps I'll have better luck in terms of snowfalls at my work's location (180 meters above sea level, perched on a hill further inland between Folkestone and Ashford). Wish me luck.
Enjoy the snow those who got it, while at the same time be safe!

Okay, a fresh new heads up.
A band of rain, sleet and snow is now starting to make landfall over the north of Scotland as it sweeps down in from the north.
This band of precipitaton will continue to advance further south, crossing over the rest of the UK in doing so over the next 24 hours. Heavy sleet and snow expected for high ground, but most likely to be as rain at lower levels.
Continued cold with risk of ice and frost under clear skies during the night.
As for Christmas Day, I'm going for a generally bright one across most part of the UK with scattered showers likely almost anywhere. It won't be quite as cold than what is being at the moment, especially as it'll be less windy, but it'll still be cold enough for some of that showers to be on the wintry side.
Still very cold at night with the continued risk of frost and ice whenever skies does remain clear.

I'm somewhat snowed in on the edge of North York moors, most snow I have ever seen. Something like 1 foot in my garden, 2-3 feet up on the moors, drifted to 4-5 feet in places, absolutedly amazing.
I was expecting the snowfall tonight, a couple of hours though, it came on at 6PM and is still spitting and sputtering now, not what I saw forecasted at all. House arrest for a couple of days atleast for me.
