Well, I will be coming into some money this week (Monday at the latest), and I want a new lens for my 350d.
I have the kit lens at the moment, and I'm looking for a longer reach range. Would a 18-135mm or 55-200mm be my best bet? (for wildlife things or things that are a bit away from me).

Also, where would be the best place to get a fisheye lens from?

And is there a massive difference between Canon and Sigma lenses?

Whats your budget?

Ive never heard of a Canon fit 18-135, but i wouldnt expect great quality from something with such a bit range. And the 55-200 is in the same league as the 18-55kit, which again isnt all that good.

Depending on budget id recommend a 70-200f4 which is a excellent piece of glass.

I find the 18-55 kit lens to be spot on. My budget for both the fisheye and longer range is about £500-600. Is it do-able?

Can't comment on Canon lenses I'm afraid but I've found Sigmas to be superb lenses, especially as you get closer to the f2.8 HSM models. My 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8 (both HSM) cover 99% of what I need it for. Lower than 24mm you're looking at really wide angle stuff like landscapes. More than 200 you're looking at long distance e.g. wildlife. Looking at the kind of photography you do I'd look at these 2 lenses. I paid £400 for the 70-200 & £200 for the 24-70 from another member here (both used but mint). Don't forget that low light (clubs) shots need a lower aperture - hence aiming at f2.8.

Another question (will sound dumb).. but does each bigger lens screw onto the smaller ones or do I take the kit lens off and put the longer range ones on?

No - you change the whole lens each time.

Hours of fun in clubs then haha.

I would go for the Canon 70-300mm IS. :)

I was hoping to avoid buying online, partly because I don't always feel safe doing it, and partly because I'm rather impatient, and partly because I like to be able to return the item to a shop quickly if there's a problem.
Any high street retailers that are any good, price and custoemr service wise?

Not sure - grab a Yellow Pages & start calling around to see who will price-match against web prices maybe? I've stumbled across the odd bargain with used kit coming in - some might keep a customer "wish list" & contact you when something come in?

I've just been to local camera shop, he can order most things on next day delivery (for a little bit extra £ of course).
For a Sigma 15mm fisheye, it's £360 inc delivery. He can get anything else I need either which is good, as my wishlist is increasing by the minute.
So much for not wanting any more kit for a while.

PM Kerso about the 70-300IS, he has it on ebay for £345 he will generally do it cheaper for you off of ebay.
I'm sure I said this in another thread the other day:thinking:

I PM'd Kerso today.
The money will be in my account next Tuesday at the latest, but they reckon it'll probably be in tomorrow.
So now I have to actually decide which lenses I want. was told today the Sigma 15mm fisheye isn't a proper fisheye lens, which confused me.

To be honest I'm not sure you'll actually use a fisheye that much. A fisheye lens should give a true 180 degree view through the viewfinder, but will distort the image (maybe the one you're looking at isn't quite 180 degrees?). So some club & other shots would look amazing, but too much gets quite boring. Most people I know who have bought one actually use it only rarely (although when they do the output is very eyecatching). Don't want to put you off, but don't want you to spend money on something you won't get the use out of!

I will use it though, and I'd rather buy what I know I want and will use now, no need for anything else for a while then.

Done deal! Playing devil's advocate there a bit - hope you don't mind.... look forward to seeing some shots from it here soon???

Oh yes they'll be posted once I have my toys! Going for the Sigma 8mm fisheye, and the Sigma 70-200mm APO. Hope to god they're good lenses, heard good things about the 70-200 but don't know anyone that has/has used the fisheye.
