I've been given the go ahead from the missus to upgrade the kit. With a pretty large budget, and my indecisiveness, this could take a long time for me to decide. lol.

I'm thinking a D700 with some new lenses or a D3 and use my current line of lenses. They aren't quite pro grade lenses, but do the trick nicely on my D80.

Not really sure why I'm posting... Moral support I guess. haha

If you need the extra robustness of the D3, you need a D3 but it and the D700 both deserve decent lenses so my vote would be for the D700 plus some new lenses.

If your current lenses are Full frame fine, but if they are DX they will not perform that well on either of the cameras you mention.

I say the D700, plus the 24-70 lens as a start which will be approx £3k.

My lenses now are decent I guess, but not anything like the 24-70 2.8 or anything... I'm an advocate of Tamron lenses anyway, so would probably get the 28-75mm variant.

I only have one DX lens and my wifey would be getting it. :)
And I probably will end up with the D700, but that D3 is so tempting. I'm sure not for the right reasons though tbh. haha

How about a SB-900 flashgun on permanent loan to me?!!

Haha. I don't think I could swing that by the missus. :P

Looking at your kit I would suggest the D700 and the 24-70 rather than the D3. The primary reason is your 17-50 is DX only (I think) and the 24-70 is such a fantastic lens.

Yeah, my wife will be taking over the 17-50. I'll probably end up getting the Tamron 28-75 2.8 instead of the Nikon though. Tamron's have always been good to me. :)

D700 and lenses all the way mate!! Better decision for the type of stuff you shoot I think.

Was thinking the same really and will probably end up with a 700. Seems like such a nice camera. After seeing your stuff, makes me really want one. :D

Ok. After doing some accounting, I'll need a bigger offset than I had anticipated. So I'm going with one of the following two options:

1) D700 + 70-200mm VR + 24-70mm 2.8 + MB-D10 + new CF cards

or

2) D3 + 24-70mm 2.8 + new CF Cards (and will use my current 70-200mm Tamron lens)

Which would you go for?

Get the Photix grip instead and save a hundred quid?

Not really worried about the money... But will look at the Photix grip, thanks for that. :)
Not really worried about weight either as I'm a strapping young lad. lol Just curious which kit each of you would go for.

Are you planning on buying the grip with the ninja EN-EL4A battery to increase the FPS and battery life?

If you are planning on that then seriously look at the D3 would be my advice... unless of course you think the D700's sensor cleaning function is important....

Of the two options, I'd go with the D3 & 24-70 option.

But I am curious, why did you skip on the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8? It is a fantastic lens by all accounts

I wouldn't think of the current 70-200 VR, for two reasons! 1) You already have that range covered by a very good lens; 2) newer model coming out very soon. Hence, if you really want that range in Nikon, I'd suggest to wait until new model is released, sell what you currently have and then get the newer model.

Though I use a D700, and I've loved dearly since I got it, I wouldn't mind the D3 for the extra environmental sealing it offers. Even though I don't use the D700 gripped, it's just too bulky and heavy for me .. but the D3 is a different ballgame.

Self-cleaning is a nice tid-bit. I'm used to cleaning my sensor though, so either way. Haven't looked as much into the EN-EL4A battery, but will do so.

Well, a good friend of mine has a D3 and a D700 and he loves his D3 but just wishes anything that it had sensor cleaning that the D700 has...

The battery question I was asking because if you look at the grip, the battery, the special charger for the battery and the stupidly expensive plastic battery cover, you perhaps are quite some way towards a D3 :D

Good points. I had considered the Tamron and may still go that route. I just figure that the Nikon variants are better suited to handle all weather situations. I tend to shoot a bit in the rain sometimes. My D80 has held up well in such conditions however...

I love my Tamron 70-200. It's a fantastic lens, but the AF is pretty horridly slow on it. I mainly shoot children's photography and any bit of speed helps. lol

Another good point. Sensor cleaning is definitely a bonus... And YES! lol. They are really proud of those grips and that crazy battery cover!

If you read a few of Arkady's posts on how much his D3 and lenses have endured, you will see that a D3 is an extreme overkill unless you are front line in a war zone.

OK, it may not be that much of an overkill, but it sure survived some unbelievable situations.

Apart from that, I see the D700 to be ample good. Unless you'd want the 2nd CF slot, the better sealing, the faster fps, and have a good desire to not want a built-in flash

After researching the Tamron... I think I may stick with that. Neither of my current Tammy's have every given me any grief.... I guess I can stay loyal. :D

So how about this then.

D3
Tamron 28-75 2.8 (which clears up funds for more lighting stuff muwuhahahaha)
SU-800
another SB-600

I actually like this kit a bit more I think... I've been wanting to start messing around with multiple flash guns for a while anyway.

No idea on the tamron, but sounds like a well rounded kit :)

Just make sure you get the body-driven version of the Tamron; as with all their lenses with the built-in motor the latest versions are not as nice. I use a Tamron 28-75mm with my D700 and it's lovely. :)

Thanks for that. With all of the terminology that Tamron put behind their lenses, how do you tell which is which? There are two listed on American Amazon right now, one actually specifies "internal motor" in the title, the other does not specify this, but all of the other terminology is exactly the same... ugh. :D

NVM... They both have the (IF) designation on Amazon... The non-IF may be a little more tricky to find new?

Lol. Well, how in the hell am I supposed to tell which one is camera driven focusing? :D

I'm sure there is a way....I'll have to do a bit of searching.

I do know that all the boxes with the motor-driven AF have a sticker on the box saying so. Also when hand-holding the lens if you try and move the focus ring you'ld notice some resistance/noise with the motor-driven lens...neither of these are much help if you're using mail order though!

Yup. Mail order. :( Wish there was a way to see the bottom of the lens... Maybe I can figure out which is which...

Congratulations on the new toys; you'll love the combination

Now, what are you going to do with your existing bits?

Well, I'm passing my Tammy 17-50 off to my wife. I may use my nifty a bit, but doubt it, and will probably never use my 28mm 2.8. My D80 body will probably be a backup or I'll give it to my 7 year old daughter... lol. She's asked for it a few times now.

Just an update to this.

Went with the D700 w/grip and the Nikon 24-70... All I have to say is holy crap. Going from the ISO capabilities of the D80 to the 700 is amazing. I use 3200 on the D80 regularly and am happy with some of the outcome... 6400 on the D700 blows the 80 away at 800. Just nuts stuff.

I'm in love. With my camera.

Its a truly gorgeous bit of kit and the Nikkor 24-70 is sublime, you'll be right chuffed with that I am 100% certain.

No doubt you'll be out tonight taking photos in the dark, just because you can :D
