Just wondering what you all have as secondry camera for just taking out and about for those ' just in case moments' when your dont want to carry you best dslr around? As ive only got my 60d at the moment want something a little more compact with a bit of a zoom,decent quality but not expensive.
 
There's something very appealing about the Fuji X10. Not too costly either. How much were you thinking of spending? And how much zoom did you have in mind?
 
no more than £200 x10 zoom maybe at least,though can give or take on this,looked at the x10 but really dont like the design

I usually take a Sony RX100 or hx20v depending on my mood / whether I need the long zoom. The hx20v would fall within your budget if the amazon price and sony cashback are taken into account. Sadly I bought both of them before the cashback deal was announced so have been seen randomly kicking myself over the last couple of days! :bonk:
 
I have the Canon S90 that I carry around with me, good camera but limited on the zoom. I am not to sure what the current model has as a zoom ratio.
 
I recently got the RX100 , i now take it out with me every day. Usable zoom with great image quality. Also as my main camera is the A65 a lot of the menu's etc are exactly the same so I havn't had to try and learn a new system.
 
Bought an S100 a few months back and love it - fits in my pocket alongside my phone, 24mm equiv lens at the wide end, nice to have the option of manual controls and like the focus ring control for quickly tweaking settings.
 
I went through this & bought a Panasonic FZ100. Ended up selling it as I always felt i was missing out by not having my dslr with me

Have to admit I'd of taken the RX100 over the S100 if it wasn't double the price.
 
really looking for a more compact size any other suggestions must have a decent zoom
 
The S90 S95 are pretty good walkabout cameras from Canon and hard to get more compact ;)

You're going to struggle to get more compact than some of the cameras mentioned. The HX20V (and Panasonic TZ30, sure Canon and Nikon have some as well) are very compact considering the zoom lens on them and I can't really see you getting anything much smaller.

I guess you're not interested in the S100/RX100 due to price / lesser zoom capability ?

doesn't have to be tiny :lol: big pocket size would do but need something like an x16+ zoom, saw a heron in a field walking home from work, was cursing i had no camera with me but cant lug the 60d to and from work:nono: Is the Fuji F770EXR any good ?

In that case the HX20v / TZ10 / Canon sx260 etc.. should be worth looking at ?
 
I got a olympus sz-10 which i think will fit my needs, an ex display one in new condition,just a tatty box for £65 so well pleased with that.Didn't want to spend a lot as ive spent my budget on my 60d and 18-250 macro sigma lens so that will do fine for my pocket walk around.
 
Get the Panasonic DMC-TZ25. It has better image quality than the TZ30, has a good zoom, focuses very fast (in good light) and the metering is reliable. The iA (intelligent Auto) works much better than the Sony RX100 (assuming I didn't have a bad copy) and also a bit better than the Canon S100 IMO.
Fits in your trouser pocket and is quite cheap too - £150 from Jessops (after £30 cashback)

not so important with a compact walkaround imo, its just to save walking around with your dslr and a x5 zoom or similar not much good in the countryside

I have a Panasonic TZ10 this was my camera previous to getting a DSLR very good compact camera and has been around the world and even to war with me, so can take a bit of abuse.
 
Well the camera arrived and tested and although most pics are pretty good the zoom focus is b****Y awful so its gone straight back on ebay,seemed to take ages to focus and then not on what you wanted it to. so back to the drawing board.
So is there a compact that has good focus at the long end or i think i might have to go back to a less compact bridge.
Anyone have the panosonic tz20? Hows the tz10 for this Danny?

Cheap? Good IQ? Long zoom? Generally, I would say "Pick 2!"

BTW, x?? zoom means almost nothing unless the short end focal length is specified - a x10 zoom could be a 50-500mm or a 24-240 - for your needs/wants, the 50-500 would be ideal but for my tastes, a decent wide angle at the short end is far more important! At a guess, any pocketable camera will struggle to get to a long telephoto and even if it does, chances are that it will struggle to focus and will be rather slow (high f number).

My advice would be to resign yourself to spending a little more and buying from a real shop on the High Street. Take a card (SD seems to be fairly ubiquitous these days) into a well stocked shop (Jessops springs to mind - some of the staff in some of the shops are actually knowlegeable and helpful!) and try a few that meet the specs you're after. Only fair that you spend your money with the shop that lets you get your sticky paws on their merchandise rather than just use them as a showroom for the internet!
 
pete I have no complaints with the TZ10 its done everything I have asked of it. Although to be honest I have used it as a point and shoot only. But even so I have some nice pictures from it. I would be surprised if you can find anything better at that size really.

Yes thanks still looking at the mo. Saw the tz30 and didn't like it felt cheap
 
Well decided on a ixus 1000hs not too many pixels nice metal body and had ixus 350 i think it was which lasted years , would have preferred a slightly longer zoom but I feel those compacts with the x18/20 lack the image quality . Ill either get a good bridge or lens for the 60d at a later date

Well its £119 which to be honest is all I wanted to.pay for a compact and didn't want one with too many gimmicks on it like most of them have which I'd never use.There seems to a competition between the manufacturers to see how much rubbish they get in a camera rather than worrying about the most important image quality
