Decent value wide lens

Hey everyone, I've been toying with the idea of getting a wide angle lens. Money is an issue however so I'm looking best bang for buck type thing. I was looking at something like the 10-20 Sigma or the 10-24 Tamron perhaps. Anyone got anything good or bad to say about either or maybe another alternative?
I do admit the Nikon would most likely be the best choice but I cant justify spending big bucks at the minute unfortunately.

I've never used tamron before (not sure why ive always avoided them) but i have the sigma 10 - 20mm. I also have the D series which comes without the motor because like yourself i have the 7100 with the motor in the body. I dont have any negatives so far but you can understand depending on the focal length used and POV you will get some distortion which you can sort out in post.

I have a top end sigma lens so im happy with the quality they have to offer. If you pick up the D series lens you will get it cheaper, unfortunately i cant help you with a price because i picked mine up in the canary islands. Here is some of the work i have taken with this lens.

1) @ 14MM on D7100



2) @ 10MM on D7100



Hope this helps in some way.. I think as long as you don't go too cheap with brands you've not heard of or some guy telling you he has a wide angle lens that just happens to screw onto your kit lens you'll be ok

Usual choices:
Sigma 10-20
tokina 11-16
and the tamron.

There is also samyang, 14mm, and maybe a fish eye 8mm... to consider.

Tokina is around 400-500ukp, samyang is around 200-250 (perhaps - haven't looked recently).

Samyang might be manual only, with wide it usually doesn't matter too much.

Tokina I have (see link in siggy for pics). One lens I also take on holidays...
 
I've had the Sigma 10-20mm and the Nikon 10-24mm and theres not a great deal between them imho,not tried the Tokina 11-16mm but its highly rated:)
 
Just got myself a Sigma 10-20 today. Only tried a couple of shots in the garden so far, but I am impressed.
 
I wanted to really get into landscape as I live on the beach on the south coast, took it as far as I could b4 a wide was needed. Looked around and the sigma was looking good then I found out that a photographer I was following on Flickr was using out it sealed the deal. Great lens, check out what can be done with it in the right hands

I loved my Sigma 10-20 but had to let it go when I went FF. It's a great little lens.
 
Hey guys thanks for the input. Upon doing more research I see sigma also do a F3.5 lens as well as a F4-5.6 can I ask which one you guys were talking about?

i use the 4.5 simply as it was cheaper.. i will never shoot anything other then landscape with this lens which i use lower aperture anyway
 
I was referring to the older, just as well built, just as good optically, but much cheaper F4-5.6. All the newer f/3.5 version provides is the constant aperture, but f/3.5 is pretty pointless on such a wide lens anyway.
 
If you want to keep the budget down, there is an older Tamron 11-18, I managed to pick one up for £150 and build quality and IQ have impressed.

I haven't had much time to use it (or get used to it) so don't have many samples.

The f4 id say as youll struggle for filters with the f3.5 and its alot more expensive
 
I have the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX DC, which I've been using for a while now with my EOS 7D, and it never fails to impress.

Well guys I bought the Sigma 10-20, got it for £265 from the guys above, Thanks for the recommendations everyone, its a cracking lens, and I'm shocked at how much you can actually fit into it compared to a kit lens or the likes. I can also recommend this lens, the picture is pin sharp with very little distortion at all.
