Decent sub £100 canon flash new or used.

Hi guys,

Anyone recommend as above, also any good reading on lighting techniques and equipment. I have mostly been doing landscapes and such but would like to move more onto people sadly I know this is all about the lighting... of which I know b****r all about.

Ian, if you're looking at off camera flash you could look at the old EZ series flashes. You'll not pick up any of the newer EX models for under 100 quid, mate.

The Nissin range are decent though. I think they do one for about £100.

This is where I struggle, I understand what an off the camera flash is (obviously) and hat hey are triggered remotely but what is he benifits over an attached flash? Is it mainly he direction and if so can an on camera flash not bounce light in the disired way? I just really wanna start off with good head/portraight shots and move on from there. Isn't the nifty fiftey on a crop ideal for this?

You can use either a ttl cord or a set of wireless triggers to trigger the flash off-camera. The cord would allow you to retain full ttl control of the flash, however you'd be limited to the reach of the cord, although they do come in lengths of up to 10 metres.

Wireless triggers, on the other hand give you more control over placement of the flash and more range (up to around a couple of hundred feet), the downside being that you would be limited to using the flash in fully-manual mode.

It is possible to get triggers that are wireless and ttl-compatible, but you'd be looking at around £500 for a trigger/receiver combo....
 
And the point of getting the light off the camera is you have much more creative control and, well, your pictures will look better. If you're into portraits it's pretty much a must to progress.
 
The Nissin di622 is a great little flash, thinking of selling mine. ;)

For the price its great, same power as canon flashes, its just the recycle time which is slower, about 1-2 seconds. However you really start wanting a Canon one after a few months.
 
I got my sigma flash second hand of here for not much more than £100, it an EF 530 DG Super which is very similar spec to the canon 580. It's a bit plasticy but I've had no problems with it in the year I've been using it!
