Not been around on the Forum much for the last few years :( I was a student midwife. Made it to 2nd year, but my health took a turn and it became clear I was not going to be able to pursue this career. I was devastated. I was able to transfer to Nursing, but again, the stress of the course caused ill health :(
So I find myself with time on my hands whilst I get my life back on track. I do have a 1000D but it has decided to have an issue - between contacts on lens and the camera body :(

I find myself looking for a decent compact. Have been looking at a Canon G7x. I like the price and the reviews sound positive. But I would like to get some opinions. Is there anything better on the market? I like the touch-screen, and the Wi-Fi/NFC capability. Zoom length is pretty important to me, and low light ability.

TIA

Not sure about price comparisons, nor about touch screens, but have you thought of a Fuji X30? Fast 28-112 (eq) manual zoom lens, very good EVF, excellent colours. See the thread on it and the other small Fujis...

I have a 450D and am fussy about image quality, but since I've owned the G7X I am quite happy taking that out when I want to travel light. It does a decent enough job.

Have you tried rectifying the contacts issue? Normally a good clean sorts it if there's nothing broken?

If you're wanting a fixed lens compact with a big sensor and zoom you do't have a lot of options. There's the G7x as you've mentioned, the Sony RX100 (I, II, III, and IV), Panasonic LX100 and the new Canon G5x that's release in a week or so. The G5x looks like an improved (albeit ugly) version of the G7x, with the added benefit of a viewfinder. The Canons have the advantage over the later versions of the Sonys and Panny have a slightly longer zoom. The later Sonys apparently have better autofocus, and the Panny has the largest sensor of the lot and therefore should yield the best image quality across the board, most noticeably in low light.

Thankyou for your replies :-) Not yet tried to rectify the contacts issue, but to be honest, the 1000d frustrates me. I had a 550d before I sold all my equipment, and I only bought the 1000d to get me by. I also find it heavy to carry.
I do not want to commit financially to another dslr hence the hunt for a decent compact.
