To follow up on Ricks comments, there was a report several months ago on BBC breakfast news, that reds in some areas had been discovered to either have immunity to the pox or be found to be recovering from it - can't remember which as I only saw half the report.

As for thr grey cull, they can start with the 3 that raid my bird feeders daily, regardless of squirrel proof feeders, chilli powder in the food etc :bang:

Personally I am for the cull, assuming its done as humanely as possible, give the indiginous reds a fighting chance.

I am for the cull to save our Reds, but it doesn't mean I can't be sad for the greys It troubles me that animals will have to die as a result of some idiot humans stupidity in the first place. The species adapted to our country and survived, even thrived. Then we go and reward them with death. Poor things. I do 100% understand why it has to be done though.

For what its worth. I personally take my hat off to young Ewan. How many young folk are even interested in nature these days?
He has come on here & given his thoughts on the subject.
Any time you want to come visit some real Red squirrels Ewan I will make you welcome.
I understand what you say about being disgusted.
I am still for the cull though even though I will take no pleasure in doing it if / when the greys get to our patch.

In living memory Reds were once shot on sight too by foresters as they were seen as a pest in forestry. Me, I have seen more woods ruined by the hand of man & by the neglect of man than any squirrel could ever do.
