Just been anounced that all greys in the Aberdeen/Grampian area are to be culled to preserve the local indigenous population of reds. Great news that someone has the balls to make such a decision to get rid of the vermin.

I, for one am delighted and might even help out:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Saw something about this on tv this am, about time and hopefully not to late.

I didn't see how they planned on culling though

Glad you agree.:thumbs::thumbs:

They have suggested trapping then clubbing or shooting. Sounds good to me:thumbs:

Does this mean all the restaurants in the local area will have access to copious amounts of squirrel meat? Nom nom nom.

I am wondering who gave man the right to decide what species dominates another.. if the natural progresion is for one to be more than the other then who are we to interfere unless it is a direct threat to our existance..

What happens if the red then start to outnumber the grey and decide its payback time and wipe them out.. then the red go on to be diseased and pass something onto us that c nt be cured... whos a clever donkey then eh?

Take with pinch of salt because I have no idea about nature :)

you can call me controversial but it's something to do with
  1. being top of the food chain
  2. interfering constantly with the "balance of nature"
  3. introducing this species to the UK specifically.

What happens if the red then start to outnumber the grey

That'll be the balance of nature restored.

What, like mad squirrel disease?

Salt, pepper, herbs, butter generally work well.

there was a program on the other night on C4 about a guy in Northumbria employed by a Local Lord to exterminate all greys he came across

Bushy tailed rats and vicious little b's into the bargain.

Yay, bout bleeding time , hope it spreads down here as well..........

Edit.

Kipax, mate.

Greys are not indigenous to this country,Reds are. The greys carry pox that infects the reds and kills them. Greys are rats with bushy tails and eat food that our natural predators need.

Basically, they are right little b`stids.

But you are quite fond of them though Eh Frac

( is that fried or boiled ?:D)

When english nature "split" from DEFRA somewhile ago they said that
they would do this.
FINALLY they found the balls from somewhere

At New Year we went to the Formby pine woods near Liverpool to see the Red Squirrels. If only .....

It seems that the Greys had been seen in the area, infecting the reds with squirrel pox which the greys carry but don't suffer from.

Most of the Reds had died - probably in a painfully unpleasant way too - leaving the squirrel "niche" vacant. More grey squirrel habitat as if we needed it.

So that is a really brave decision by SNH and lets hope it works.

Let the war begin and not before time!!. I was mortified last year to hear that a grey had been spotted in our area for the first time, then one was trapped and found to be a carrier of the pox.

Pity Charlie isn`t about, he knows his stuff on squirrels.......

i believe that this cull has very little to do with preserving the red squirrel populations, it does have alot to do with keeping up with demand for walkers crisps latest flavour...

Excellent news :)

I'd never seen a little red until I came here as back home all we had was the big ugly grey ones.

Sorry, what the ****?

In what way is this a good thing? Why on earth is this nessecary? We're culling them because we reckon the red ones look nicer?

I'm disgusted

Nope its to give our native reds, nesting birds and woodlands a chance against the non indigenous interlopers
if you really are interested this is worth a click

I agree with the cull, even though sadly, it's not the Greys fault that they need culling. They were introduced into this country by misguided individuals and have thrived beyond all expectations to the detriment of our native Reds. They also do untold damage to trees.

Locally we have a huge outcry every time they cull the feral pigeon population in the town centre, yet they feed in bins and any old rubbish they can find and their droppings all over buildings and pavements are a serious health hazard.

:agree: Colour Predjudism, racism, anti-greyism, anti US. Kill the strong and support the weak :nono:

I support the reds as well

As well as disgusted, you are ill informed and not aware of the full facts.

Regards.

I wasnt being alltogether serious you know :)

Same with the bloody mink that have caused havoc since the loonies released them. They are everywhere now.

If you had clicked the link in post 28 that would given you a rough idead about the millions £
they cost the forresty industry, the damage they do to nesting birds, they eat eggs
as well as young chicks and of course the pox virus that affects our natives.

Serious question, would you rather that the human race didn't ry to redress the balance of nature at all, ie not cull anything?

Unless its a threat to our (mankind are we calling it?) actual existance then we shouldnt go near it.. full stop... Just my opinion based on very limited info :)

im all for the cull its neccessary to ensure the survival of our own native species i remember growing up and there was quite a few about then ( only 20 odd year ago) and now they are few and far between so much so youre meant to report a sighting of them.............

and this is coming from the country that reportedly has 75% of the population so

they darn squirrells

am with you on that cobra after all it is usually ourdoing that causes 'alien' species in the 1st place

Imho i think we should get rid of nearly all our non native spieces and bring back all the ones we have killed off and redo all the harm we've done for hundreds of year. (that even means wolfs, lynx and bears ) just mho mind you :D

totally agree with you also macky u can see looking at our landscape that we should have wolves, bears etc in there
