I'm going through similar just now.
I started putting olive oil in earlier this week and have an appointment with the nurse next Friday. Ideally I think I need both done but can't face being totally deaf, one ear is bad enough. I'll just make another appointment to get the other side done in another weeks time.
It's infuriating not being able to hear clearly.

No pain no. Just the occasional embarrassment of doing a polite laugh to someone when you're not sure what they said, not realising they've asked you a question.

Hope it gets sorted on Monday!! I remember I was away at a friends in Jersey when I was deaf with wax. It's very frustrating, as I was constantly not hearing what people said, and it made socialising harder. Must be so frustrating for people who are permanently deaf.

Speaking now as a deaf person - yes - it is really frustrating when you can't hear clearly. But having said that please don't shout at us thinking that increased volume will help - it often doesn't - we need you to speak clearly and carefully so we don't lose the endings of words .
Many of us can lip read to a greater or lesser extent - but many folk when they speak hardly open their mouths or use their lips - just watch folk on TV and you'll see many mouths just opened a wee slit and a mumble comes out - and we are supposed to understand what they are saying !

Same here, I have partial deafness (about 70%) and unless people speak facing me I really find it hard to understand, particularly when there's background noise.
I dont help myself sometimes, as I have NHS aids and the clicking from them drives me insane so I dont wear them as often as I should.

Read through the thread ...
First up - have you had your ears looked at and have they said its wax a couple of weeks ago ?
If it's wax - certainly sounds like it from your description initially - when you've been swimming the water will poss be getting past your plugs and this will soften the wax, which then swells and there you go - can't hear ! Then as you've been advised use olive oil for a week or 2 and this will help to soften it - the only problem you have is that you'll def not be hearing in that ear as it gets softer and softer. Use the oil twice a day if you can, if not, at night time with that ear to the ceiling and a "plug" of cotton wool...as previously said in the thread.
If the olive oil isn't really working, sodium bicarbonate drops are def next option.
A lot of GP surgeries are stopping ear stringing due to problems following it and complications caused by it. If they have stopped it, then they will have processes in place on how to deal with excess wax that just using oil doesn't work on.
If it's not wax / you can't hear following dewax / your GP isn't happy then they will refer you to an ENT department for a consultation and they will pop you round the corner to the Audiology department for a full, diagnostic Audiogram and Tympanogram (if required) ...

Oh and with regards to swim plugs - if your not using custom fit ones, give your local Audiology clinic a bell and ask if they make swim plugs - these are custom fit to your ear and are designed to stop splashed water going down the ear canal - some departments will charge for them, others not.
And you can choose colour and sparkles if you want

Have got an appt with the practice nurse tonight so we shall see what happens.
As you say my hearing in the bunged up ear is totally bunged up now. Before the olive oil I got occasional "clear" moments

Well as I walked in last night the nurse was preparing the machine Ms McFrazzles posted a picture of earlier. I had to sign a waiver in case it all went wrong and then she went for it. I can now hear! 
My other ear also has wax buildup though so I need to start olive oiling that one now as well.
If anyone knows how to locate my local audiology clinic that would be good too!

I WENT DEAF FOR OVER A MONTH. TURNS OUT MY EUSTACHION TUBES WERE BLOCKED AFTER BLOWING MY NOSE TO HARD. I ALSO SUFFER FROM TINNITUS. ALL I COULD HEAR WAS A VERY LOUD RINGING AND WHAT SOUNDED LIKE DARTH VADAR WHEN I BREATHED IN AND OUT.
I USED A NETI POT DAILY. I EVEN CONSIDERED HAVING GROMITS FITTED IN MY EAR DRUMS SO THEY COULD DRAIN. PICTURE A STRAW FULL OF FLUID BUT YOUR FINGER IS OVER THE END.

Only 1/2 deaf now! Hope the other gets sorted as easily, Keith. I would think that the surgery should be able to tell you where the local audiology clinic is - possibly Dorchester. You might even need the quack to refer you to the clinic.

Did you enjoy it? I loved having it done. Did you get to see the gunky bits of ear turd? I loved looking at it, but then again, I'm a nurse, so consequently weird and sick. (And believe me, the nurse would have enjoyed doing it).

Excellent news you've been dewaxed.
Don't go googling and seeing someone private for swim plugs - phone your local hospital and ask for the Audiology dept. if there isn't one there they'll be able to tell you where it is.
Departments differ, some you can self refer in for these, some need a GP referral - they'll be able to tell you.
Oh and you will need to have your other ear cleared or they won't be able to take an impression of your ear.
Let me know if your struggling to find your local dept.
