I try and leave the drops in for 5-20 minutes and as many times per day as I can fit in to my schedule. If the build-up is heavy and it's very compacted it will take a lot of time (accumulatd contact time of oil on the wax) to get things clear.

Otex rapid are some of the drops Ive been using, to no avail, so far.

The trick is the bulb that comes with it rather than the drops.. a skoosh of warm water to flush out the wax you've already softened, then a couple of drops of oil just to keep things moist after you've dried your ear again. It's not as forceful as the syringe at the GP, but it does shift stuff and doesn't risk compacting things further in the way that using a bud or rolled up tissue does.

Still having trouble. It sounds impacted. Make an appointment with your practice nurse, if they refuse to do it, GO ELSEWHERE! I would continue with the olive oil, 3 times a day until then. I put the warmed the oil slightly and dripped it in and kept my head tilted for as long as possible. At night, I would pop some more in, then lay on the unaffected side to go to sleep/read. By morning, bits of gooey wax was on the pillow.

Seriously, I'm a nurse, you've been deaf for a long time now, you shouldn't be shoving anything in (apart from the oil and oily ball to keep it there), or using other remedies. You may have done damage, and you don't want to go poking in there. Someone profession needs to have a look inside your ears to see them. You may have damaged something. I wouldn't go down the high stree, nor would I squirt anything in.

I'm turning into bossy nurse now! :rage: ;)
 
Don't bother with the Otex, it's obviously not working. Use the olive oil.

(Why do people never bother listening to nurses or doctors and think they know better? *waves fist in air* :shifty: ) :p
 
Tending to agree Jackie. What do you mean by oily ball though? Ive not been doing that bit.

The otex is easier to use at w*rk as it has a built in "dropper" . The Olive oil, Im on my own!

After you've dropped the warmed olive oil in, get a cotton wool ball (not a bud), dip it in the warm oil and put it in your ear, gently, don't shove. Like a plug. Oil-side innermost. It keeps the oil in a bit longer. It will fall out in the night, and you'll find this the ball in the bed somewhere in the morning with a small amount of wax on it. Nice!!

I have used Otex in the past, and it does work a bit. (I love the sizzling sound, and it tickles!).

You could use the olive oil when you get up, then use it again when you get home from work, and then before bed. The combination of the otex during the day and olive oil morning and evening should soften it.

Is the deafness driving you mad? It did me!
 
When I had trouble, I just booked a double appointment with the nurse. She looked in my ears and just did it. I don't know how good your practice is, though.
 
Another option to try.

I'm another with two hearing aids and suffer terrible with them, particularly with infections. My ENT specialist was recomending puting drains in my ears as they don't drain naturally. He recomended to me putting Vicks in a large bowl and partly fill with boiling water and put towel over head and inhale until water gets cold (I know this is a old remedy and its something we done for colds as a kid). I have found this to help with ear problems and blocked feeling and deafness. Only use Vicks as I have found the own brands not to work as well.

For swimming, I had earplugs made along with the hearing aids (NHS) and are perfectly shaped for my ear, do you use these or normal ear plugs?? Ask your local Occupational Clinic when you next visit (if you have free batteries for your aids) which we have in Wales to make you some. Edit: Keith you don't wear HA, Ill leave this paragraph as original, in case of use to others

And for outer ear infections which I frequently have, I have Otomize spray several time a year.

If your doctor won't syringe your ears, here in Swansea you can go to the ENT as an emergency if needed, try this with your local hospital ENT department. I was also told, that syringing of the ears is not recomended regularly, I have only had it done a couple of times and try to avoid and use the Vicks method for me.

As the symptoms have been going on for a week or so now, I think you should go to your Doctors for advice, you can't carry on like this.
 
I don't think the OP wears hearing aids. The Vicks steam treatment is used in conjunction with 'autoinflation' where you inhale, squeeze your nose and force the vapour into your middle ears via the Eustachian tubes. It's a good method of alleviating middle ear congestion but has no effect re wax.

To the OP: Make an appt at your GP, an emergency one if necessary and demand something is done straight away, don't suffer unnecessarily because whatever the problem, I'm sure it can be sorted out easily and quickly.

I think we posted at same time there. I had edited my post for hearing aids, I just edited again and made bold for other readers.
 
The Vicks treatment works for me. I suppose with the tenting of towel, the steam and Vicks will also get into your outer ear and therefore wax. It seems as if he's been having a problem for over a week and obvisouly the wax removal remedies he's using are clearly not working yet!

As mentioned above, he needs to see his doctor and not rely on the advice of a bunch of photographers.

Actually I think it might be starting to clear at last. I shall persevere for a day or two more, if no joy then ring the quack.

TBH I'm surprised we've not had the "jelly in one ear and custard in the other" comment,
As he only seems a trifle deaf.
 
Well nothings shifting so Ive finally rang the GP's. Off to have the nurse peer into my ear on Monday. (and then tell me to put olive oil drops in I expect)
