Dead Time Machine. Talk to me about NAS

I commuted down the stairs to my office this morning to find a dead time machine :'(

Still, I have enough wifi devices here and may get an Airport Extreme later.

When I first used NAS devices they were very simple but worked a treat. You simply plugged them in, acquired or set the IP address and all was well.

Nowadays, they want to be connect to the internet (Lacie rubbish) or go to sleep after a couple minutes (WD rubbish) which often causes the computer to wait whilst the drive winds up.

Does anyone have experience of a modern NAS that doesn't want to take a nap every few minutes. Or one where you can switch off or change its sleep pattern?

I'll be looking for a 2TB NAS - any suggestions.

Take a look at QNAP or Synology they're both very good and configurable.

A lot on here have NAS from one of the above.

I'm in a similar position, my Time Capsule hasn't died, but I'm getting fed up with it being slow to access from my iMac, so I've replaced it (and my LaCie NAS) with a FW HDD.

NAS seemed like a good idea when I set it up, but it isn't really all that fast now.
 
I have the older netgear readynas at home and it works well. The newer intel based ones are better.
At work we have the high end qnap and thecus units. I don't like thecus as the software is not as reliable. The qnap is very good though and we use it for our time machine backups as it has the feature as standard.
 
Thanks. I've been looking at QNAP and I like the sound of the TS-119 - it's fanless. I do like fanless :) But I can't find a supplier.
