Dead R5?

So I was doing my usual this morning, sitting in work meetings using my R5 as a webcam, all of a sudden it powered off.
Strange, I swore I'd charged the batteries the previous evening.

Got my 3 batteries and put them all in the charger, they're all green and fully charged.

I've tried removing both memory cards, only inserting one at a time, I've tried all 3 different batteries, using the grip and by putting the battery door back on and using a single battery, nothing.

The lens was on the camera when it lost power so when I removed the lens the sensor shutter wasn't down.

Any ideas before I reach out to E-Infinity for a warranty claim?

Gutted :(

Try plug in USB power cable and power from that way, if the camera has that feature.

Otherwise, I think it's a warranty claim.

Overheating was also my first thought. I have a friend who was using his R5 for same reason and it turned off pretty much around the same time as yours.

Didn't ask if it was hot to touch. But I imagine overheated internal components doesn't necessarily mean it'll be really hot to touch.

Been 20 minute since you started this thread so I'd would give it upto an hour before talking to e-infinity.

Ok so here's the results he posted
1st time:
~20 minutes webcam, ~45 minutes downtime
2nd time (few days after):
~25-30 minutes webcam, ~30 minutes downtime
3rd time (I quote - "I clearly hadn't learnt my lesson")
~20-25 minutes
Warranty claim or rather sent it back to LCE.
He said it was sorted in 2-3 days and he had back in a week.
He hasn't said what "sorted" means or what they did, I have asked....

Interesting, I've used mine for meetings well in excess of 1 hour but I always use regular 4K not 4K Ultra.

I'll leave it off for a few hours and see what happens, I've emailed E-Infinity, not sure if I send back to them in HK or (hopefully) fix over here and they reimburse me.

No idea about his settings, he was using it outside to show off his garden projects he did over summer to his colleagues. (I know because he did the same for me)
I don't think those are the only 3 times he's used it (and he's still using it) which I also know because it didn't overheated on me in the call. He's just listed the times it's overheated for him.

I am hoping it'll be fine for you. As far as I know e-infinity will reimburse the local fix charges.

Are you running the latest firmware? In the video I've posted it helped a lot with how long it would last.

b****r, in that case it looks like the camera's just not suitable for your needs :(

Worked perfectly since September. I think the longest meeting I was in was 6 hours and it was fine.
I'll see what happens leaving it off for a few hours.

ah in that case it could well be a problem, apart from setting it to it's lowest usable resolution and frame rate I'm all out of ideas.

Did it recover? @Hanley

Nope, nothing.

Sensor cover is still open and no power.
I’ve emailed E-Infinity.

So strange as it was working perfectly one minute and then it just switched off, wasn’t hot, wasn’t running in one of the over heating video modes so I’m not sure what the issue is.

Just my luck this happens after I sold my R and literally posted the XT4 to its new owner last week.

E-Infinity have replied and asked me to take it to be repaired locally in the UK and they will refund the cost as part of their 1 year warranty.
I've emailed a local repair shop in Liverpool, if they can't do it then I'll ship it to Canon UK.

A pain but at least it looks like it'll be sorted.

My m8 has just had the same as you Paul it’s been back to canon and he is hoping for it back next week?

That's not good really is it, I wonder if it's a bug in the new firmware as I've used it for months as webcam as part of my day job and never had an issue with it.

Did your mate by grey or was this a warranty claim with Canon UK?

I don't think it's an issue with grey or UK copy....
I know 3 three isn't a massive size but still worries me a little at this point to brush it off as someone being unlucky.

I read a post on Facebook the other day that a few people complaining about similar issues. There was a few comments on it, they had ruled out firmware as some were using different firmware.

Seems like this may be a common issue. Canon repair agents might be in for a busy period.

Sorry to read this as I know that you absolutely loved it; I had decided to stick with 1DX2 for now so thank you for sharing this. I hope they manage to sort it out and it's not a deal breaker.

@cruso - did your friend say what canon said the issue was?
because LCE dealt with my friend's warranty fix, it seems they didn't bother including a report. he can't seem to find any paperwork that explains what the issue was.

Hope it gets sorted easily and reassuring that E-Infinity are doing their bit. It is a risk though going for a new model of any piece of technology, always the thought at the back of the mind if there is an underlying design flaw which don't come to light until some time later. I've just recently got an Apple M1 MacBook Air and it's terrific but do wonder if there might be a "gotcha" later down the line.

Exactly right, part of me was going to buy the R5 in the UK for that reason, the only reason I didn't is because I simply couldn't get hold of one, so when I saw it in stock at E-Infinity I jumped at it.
Hopefully they'll cover all of the repair costs.

I'm watching the M1 development very closely, stats so far seem to be amazing. I only bought a 16 inch MacBook Pro last year so I'll probably wait a few years before jumping to M1, but I imagine the M1 iMac and MacBook Pro will be unbelievable :)

What will be interesting is if Canon then provide any warranty on that work provided.
I'll be certainly asking the question.
Nikon do so I would imagine it would be the same :)

I got my 13" MBP in 2018, cost me £2300..to think a MBP half the price now can outperform it twice over is a bitter pill to swallow...I am determined to use it at least 2 more years before replacing it to get my money's worth. It's a great machine except for the heat, it gets uncomfortably hot over what seemingly normal task like backing up to cloud.
