Chaps,

I recently bought a new Nikon D300 and found a dead pixel spot which I believe is on the sensor. Its shaped like a "+" sign and only seems to appear when shooting RAW. The plus sign is made up of 5 pixels.

My question is, shall I take it back (which is a bit of a hassle) or shall I just accept it? At the moment I can only find this 1 dead pixel spot and I can only see it if I preview it on the camera screen and press the magnify button about 5 times. Haven't tried it on a computer screen yet.

I'm not sure if exchanging it for another one will have the same problem or whether the dead pixel spot would spread to adjacent pixels?

I'm abroad at the moment and don't have internet access all the time, but I would be very grateful for any advice/opinions on this and I will check back on this thread whenever I can.

Many thanks in advance! :)

What colour is this area of "dead pixels"? Also, if you haven't been able to view any images on a computer what makes you think the sensor is at fault? There is a fair chance it is on the lcd and not the sensor,....

He only said he hadn't tried it on computer screen yet...presumably because he is abroad!

I had the same on a d40x and it was the sensor. Jessops took it back about 10 weeks after I bought it.

Maybe go to a internet cafe and upload from your camera and see if it's on the picture as well...

Not sure if it i pertinent but the central 15 focus points use cross sensors that look like a plus sign.

If, when zoomed in, the small white + moves around as you pan the image then it's a sensor pixel. Mine was white but then can be any colour and it'll be on every pic you take in the same place.

stuck or dead pixels on the sensor can be red or green or blue, the software on the camera can be remapped so that they are ignored so it's not a major problem, just a hassle

If it's on every shot and noticeable on prints, I would take it back and exchange it for a new one. £900 is worth a bit of hassle to get what you want IMO.

The dead pixel spot is orange colour and appears brighter when taking different photos. I don't have a PC here to upload the photo but I'm pretty sure its on the sensor because I can only see it if I magnify the photo almost to max and I have to move the image around to find it. If its on the screen it will always be in the same position relative to the screen and not the image itself.

If it is on the D300 LCD screen you can see it without having to magnify the image to max. The spot gets bigger as I magnify it and can also be moved around the screen which can't be done if its a dead pixel spot on the LCD.
