Hi,

Is there anyone out there who knows what the various pins are for on the EF lenses.

My EF 100 macro has died....no AF, no aperture and ERR 99 on the camera. Tried with a couple of bodies and done the usual cleaning etc....no luck.

I thought a poke around with a multi-meter might give me some clues but I don't know which pins are the aperture, focus and power.

Bob

Have you tried cleaning the contacts? this is the usual cause of ERR 99, I understand a pencil rubber (Eraser) sometimes works?

Les,

Yes, done the usual soft rubber and alcohol methods.

Error 99 is a generic error code that covers all problems except the ones that have been given specific codes...starting at 00....no lens attached.

Thanks Ian....it'll take me a week to get through that thread.

From what I can see, it is the aperture that is giving the problem...it appears to be stopped down quite a way when off the camera and doesn't open when powered up...tried with multiple bodies and in different modes.

Okay, looks like it has to go away for a bit of TLC. Does anyone have any good or bad feedback about the various authorised repair centres in the UK....namely;

Canon in Borehamwood
Colchester Camera
AJ Johnstone in Glasgow
H Lehmann in Stoke.

Opinions much appreciated as I've been lucky enough up to now not to have needed their services.

Cheers Bob

I took my body to Borehamwood for a sensor clean
very friendly and turned it round within an hour
trick is to ring ahead and book
then you don't have to wait
take a book as it's in an industrial estate in the middle of nowehere
there is a coffee machine and it's free

Don't send it Colchester! lol I sent my 20D there and didn't get it back for two months. In that period I developed all kinds of stress related conditions!

Lehmanns is good.

I have mixed opinions on Colchester.
A friend had them in court because he took a camera in for repair and they dropped it and tried to say he took it in like it, he won his case.
I took my camera in there for a metering problem and they were really good, they tested it while I waited and confirmed there was a problem but it did take 2 weeks to fix.
I would use them again but only because they are 5 minutes up the road from me.

Thanks folks. Turn around time is not a big issue as I've got other things to play with in the mean time and it'll be a postal relationship with any of them.

I sent off for a couple of on-line guesstimates this morning but neither of the two companies have replied yet....I'll report back if they do and what guesstimates they come up with.

Thanks again....

Bob

PS...strange that it should die within a week of me offloading my EF-S60...perhaps it got lonely on the macro shelf.

Bit of a late reply I know but I thought I'd chip in my bit.

I used H Lehmanns a couple of weeks ago for a repair to my 10D after messing around with some AF confirm adapters which fried the main board. Repair cost, including new main board, sensor clean and AF calibration came in at £160.00.

Couldn't fault the service at all.... I'd recommend them to anyone, proper old school establishment.

Before anyone mentions it, I know it's a lot to spend on a 10D but to my mind I have a long way to go before I'll be limited by the abilities of the body.

Anyway hope you get it sorted out without to much wallet bashing.

There's a pinout published here but I'm not sure it's of much use (or necessarily accurate!). If the iris appears stuck it may be worth trying "pulsing" the DOF preview switch or powering the camera on with the switch depressed.

I've used Colchester to repair the missus S2 IS. Can't fault their service & camera was turned round in a day. Have to say that I only selected them in the first place though on exactly the same criteria as Scraggs - they're 5 mins up the road from me also!

I've used Colchester for shutter damage repair to my 350D and they were excellent. £150 or so including a general service and sensor clean. All done by post. Turnaround was about 3-4 weeks though. They will give you a quote before they start work and you have the choice to accept or decline (and pay return postage).

Thanks for all the input guys. Lehmanns is the chosen one based on their reply.
AJ Johnstones version of their online quote turned out to be a simple request to send it in...no quote.
I was put off Colchester by the sueing issue above....a one off maybe but if there's a choice, I'll avoid it.
I had tried to DOF abuse trick but to no avail...this lens is sick!

Bob

PS...I'll report back on the quality of service (10 day turnaround offered) in due course.

Ive used Lehmanns twice... once when i dropped my 1d, had it repaired and serviced, quick and cheap...

The other time was when my 5D died, sent it to WHE and they forwarded it to Lehmanns who sent it directly back to me, fully repaired and that was very quick and free... (Warranty repair job)
