DC2Z's 52 2010 - Week 25+26 Beginning (PG8)

Lovely idea, not something I'd have thought of...

Only fault I can think of is that the flash needs bouncing off something as it seems a bit harsh, I think the ceiling might work well

Good work Darren!

Thank you for taking the time to give your views and thoughts. I take all comments on board and will try to improve

Week 8 - Mechanical

This week I had the idea in my head and then found I didn't have a watch which would allow me to make the back off easily.

That's a shame. Could have been a good shot but the plastic cover and all the lettering is wrecking it. Get the hammer out ;)

I will revisit this shot when I get the chance

Sorry, wrecking was a bit strong. Spoiling would be better :)

I like it myself, I might even be tempted to accentuate the lettering to make it look like it's hovering over the movement. That's just me though :D

Arthur

nice detail, not sure about the plastic, but as it was there perhaps make use of it as already suggested.

Toy characters seem to be a popular theme for people this week, vibrant shot!

As above, the palstic cover stops it being a detailed shot of the watches working parts.

was thinking along similar lines, but couldnt get any backs off at all.. agree about the plastic, but as you say.. one to revisit? - would be interesting to see that copper coil in detail (I think its copper coil?)

Wow, that's a really interesting mechanical shot. I quite like the fact that it's got this clear plastic covering, and I'm glad it didn't put you off posting the shot. :)

I like your shot for mechanical Darren.

Personally, I'm in 2 minds about the plastic cover . . . as it is I am finding it distracting, mainly because it's oof and kind of in the way.
But I always think that if you can't change something, then try to work with it. If you went with Arthur's suggestion of deliberately emphasising the lettering to make the most of it being there I think it could really work.

Missed your people shot sorry - that made me smile and I actually rather like the green background.

Not really sure if I like this photo. It was taken in my light tent and was really the 1st time I have used this. I think the lighting works pretty well but I think I should have chosen a different subject.

As always please give your honest views as its all about learning for me

i like the shot but it seems to lack detail like the peoples faces iyswim also would rather see the dogs face than his bum !!!!

I'm getting concerned about your collection of toys Darren :) I think the background (whilst a nice blue) isn't helping the overall picture here. Toys on the carpet or in the living room would add more "play" context rather than attempting something clinical like this.

Don't know much (if anything !!) about light boxes but if the idea is to light the subject with shadows all over the place then it worked !

I like the colours and your thought behind this Darren but it just needs a little something to make the subject pop a bit. Not really sure what that something is though.... perhaps a different dof, just to separate the figures from their surroundings. Iain

Nice idea but as above not sure if using the light tent has worked, maybe if it was just one toy in the tent or all of them in a more natural enviroment.

:D Well it made me smile!

Bright, fun and cheerful.
I'd quite like to see a bigger version because I'm having to peer right into the screen to see any detail - however, I reckon the light tent has definitely worked to minimise shadows and cut down reflections on the shiny plastic.

I'm just not sure that blue was the right choice of background for the subjects in this one. The blue toys are disappearing into it and the pink ones are just clashing. Something more neutral may have worked better with the bright subjects - or just setting the light tent up over the carpet to give a more natural feel

I really like it... it's just a nice happy smiley type of image. Some days you need to see an image like this, and today is one of those days for me. Top marks, love it!

Darren, I'm not sure on this... the scene works, and the toys are sharp and colourful, but I don't think the blue background does anything for it.

This week I really didn't have the umph to do this. My idea really didnt take off. I know what I wanted to achieve but couldn't pull in off.

The only plus point from this week was that I got to use my wireless shutter release for the 1st time.

Otherwise I think I will just write this week off and move on to week 11 and I really must start to up my game.

I just want to know where everyone gets there test tubes from.

I guess you're not keen on the results for this week and you probably know what might be wrong with them. But from my point of view the first isn't helped by the background, whilst the second seems to have too much light/reflection. A combination of the two would have helped. The white tack is a bit out of place too (although a clever idea), perhaps trying to stick it out of view would save a cloning job.

You're not the only one looking forward to getting this week out of the way, although it seems most of us think that every week :D

Darren, I think the one on the right works better, with the uncluttered background, but the fizzing in the first tubes on the left hand side works well. It's on theme.

Darren... you'll get used to that.... wait till we get past week 40 and it's all downhill  Remind me again why I'm doing this for a second year ?? ;)

good colours and you got to play with your wireless shutter release so all was not lost !

Darren,

Don't be too hard on yourself this week - we'll all have weeks like this.
FWIW you've learnt how to use your remote shutter release and I think these are actually quite good.

The background in the second is definitely better and the colours have come out well.
I agree with (the other) Darren on the lighting and white tack - but it's a long way from being a disaster.
In fact I think it's got real potential. If you could have worked with those couple of niggles - and maybe played with the levels in the test tubes to get them lined up on or on a slope to give a bit more visual impact, there's the makings of a very good shot there.

Here's to a week 12 that you're happier with.

I just want to know where everyone gets there test tubes from.

You've obviously never bought orchids from a florist's.

I was definitely the same with Chemistry...I like the second shot though and once you have done something like this once it gives you something to think about how to improve it if you do it again...I have been experimenting with droplet shots and seem to get a little better each time I play but still have a huge way to go.....I'm guessing that is a really good thing about the 52..being pushed to have a go at things you wouldn't attempt otherwise :)

Not really Candid but the day I had free to get out and about and it rained

What style !!

Wet play then ?

It's great, a real moment in time, great DOF, good colours and a god take on the theme.

Darren, a lovely image you've caught there. Sharp and Clear... it looks like it's on theme, but I'm gonna guess you were spotted... ;)

It's funny this week - we've had some candid shots that look posed and now one shot that wasn't candid but looks it.
It definitely looks in keeping with the theme.

She looks very smart in her Winter gear and you've caught a lovely moment there. The flying scarf ends add a nice little detail to it

This is my attempt at a trypich and its my 1st ever attempt and to be honest I pleased with how it came out.
The thing I'm not happy with is the images. The strawberry on the right hand side isn't clear enough
and I would have changed this but the battery ran out
(I have now ordered a spare!).
Its also one of the 1st times I have used my Nikon 60mm Macro so I'm trying new things all the time

Lovely 'candid' shot - great capture, little girls just love dressing up :).

Really like the three 'produce' shots - putting the three together works really well.

Darren the produce triptych has worked really well, the niggle being the strawb, but you know about that one...

Hi Darren, I'm sorry it's taken me soooo long to visit your 52, but I've just had an enjoyable browse through it. There's nothing sensible or useful I can add to all the comments over the weeks, so I'll jump straight into Week 12 Produce. :)

Produce: I love this - and congratulations on your first triptych. You have every reason to be pleased with it, especially with the edited version with the new strawberry. I love the variations in texture of the 3 fruits and the colour progression from pale (almost grey) green, through orange to red.

It looks as though you're enjoying your macro lens! It opens up a whole new set of opportunities, doesn't it? ;)

I'll try and drop in more regularly from now on! :D

Jean
