DC2Z's 52 2010 - Week 25+26 Beginning (PG8)

I really didn't like this weeks theme. I was totally uncomfortable doing this but I guess thats the whole idea.
The 1st shot was what I had always planned on going with but the only street map I had was circa1980

The 2nd shot wasn't meant to have any cars etc as I was to should the long lonely walk home in the dark.

Sorry for the poor images this week.

I was despairing at this week's theme as well. We must keep going though :)

I like the map idea, but to work with the map you have I think you either need a macro or a heavy crop to get really close and say street.

I'm afraid your second image isn't really saying anything to me. I think there's someone in the distance but the light in the foreground (flash?) is making me look there instead. For the sort of shot you have in mind I think you need to catch someone walking under a street light, bump up the ISO and shoot wide as possible (no flash).

The second one doesn't really do much for me I'm afraid, I see what you were aiming for, but the person is too far away.

I think the map is the way to go, but you need to get in much closer.

Well done for getting something, not an easy week.

Definitely a challenging week for a lot of people, so you're not alone.

The second shot has some real potential IMO, but the lighting isn't helping it. I like the composition with the figure on his lonely walk, as Darren said it could really do with him being caught beneath a street lamp and the foreground being darker to give it the emphasis that it needs.

Not a bad week at all though, and that map shot is beautifully crisp and clean.

Heh. My Grandad was from Uckfield. Small world eh!

I tend to agree with the others. A crop of the map to remove the spine, and focus on a particular street might have worked a bit better.

Chin up! I had real problems with Chopped and Poetry, so I understand where you're coming from. At least you got out, and took some shots, which is the whole point of the 52.

Keep 'em coming!

Ian.

This is my take on speed.

Now as you'll see high shutter speed required.

Liking the shot Darren, but I'd say it's a little flat....

Not sure if posting edits are the done thing in 52 threads so I'll twitter you a link to my edit!

Very good effort though, and a stunner of a kid!!

the edited version is better!

(elfin safety - *** no helmet at that speed!?!?!)

very clever concept!

too be honest Aly may make quite a few appearances during my 52

The edit is much better. Well done for catching her at such speed :)

Poem....Shame it's a little dark, I would have liked to have seen a more detailed shot of that pudding. Hmmmmmmmmmm pudding :D

Chopped....Second version works very well, it's a great action shot with the steam.

Street....Agree with other comments about the map, a tighter shot showing a street in more detail would work better.

Speed....What you couldn't find a nice steep hill for her :D very cute

No 2 is a great keeper Darren and a good take on this weeks theme. Its amazing how fast those flinstone powered vehicles can go...Mick

This is my take on speed

Nice to see Peppa Pig making an appearance in a 52!

Mind you, if you wanna see speed, wait until she decides to try and ride it down the stairs!

I'm really not sure if this has worked, this week was more about getting some Photoshop experience. I've never really used borders or done much editing so I really need to pratice.

The main thing I've learn is I need an off camera flash cord (its now been ordered).

Feel free to give me any tips as this is all about learning and developing my skills

nice idea, not sure I like the border.. I feel like I am looking into a box.. hard to explain ! probably just my eyes !

Nice take on Present, great to hear you are practicing something new. The off camera flash cord will be a great addition to your kit. The only slightly negative point I can make is the lighting on the Nikon looks a little harsh compared to the Olympus.

The Nikon photo was taken using the Olympus so I had very little options

Not your strongest image of the 52, but certainly fits the theme.

I spy an Olympus :D If it was possible to get the two together, maybe use the nikon on a timed exposure and place a mirror in front?

Good luck for next week

Nice idea, I spent ages in the loft trying to find my old Ricoh and eventually gave up.

Great idea and it's worked well.. If you're using a P&S you're not going to get SLR quality, and that's fine... just have to work with it... Besides without a mirror it's hard to use the SLR when you're getting a piccy of it :D...

I quite like the processing, it sorta fits with the images and the story. Well done for working on it.

It's worked well and fits the theme. I think you can claim that the darker lighting on the P&S represents the dark ages....;).

Personally I'm not too keen on the border which I find just a bit too fussy, but it must have been a very useful PS exercise for you. - I wouldn't want to attempt something like that!

Good take on the theme

I like the difference in lighting, as Tracer said, it represents the dark ages compared to an slr.

Glad you are trying new things too. I've never used PS, far too complicated for me

not sure i like the boarder as said above, but great take on the theme. well done :D

Thanks for all the comments. I'm also not 100% sure on the border but I wanted to get used to using them and trying different things

Hi Darren,

Well done on getting to grips with something new in PS. I actually like the border that you've created and it's something that I'd have no idea how to do . . . my only issue is that I don't think it suits the image that you've used it on. It's worth remembering the technique though, because another week you may have a shot that it will really add to.

The image itself is a good concept for this week's theme. And IMO the addition of text and the lining up of the images has been executed very well

I think it's all been said already about the image quality of the Nikon shot. I don't really mind that per se. It is what it is, a shot from a P&S will never be SLR standard as John said - and in fact the feel can actually add something to some images. Where it's not working for me here is that it's giving the newer "present" shot a grainy, aged feel which seems at odds with what you're trying to get across.

I'm not sure about this photo, I know how I wanted it to look but I'm not sure if I've pulled it off.
If we hadn't of had Street a few weeks ago I may have done something along those lines.

well done for thinking of something! I sure cant! i think it would look slightly better without the bright spots on their hats/cheeks etc other than, i like it!

I was trying to find a suitable background colour and this one seemed the best. As for the flash this is one of the main areas I really need to work on. I will try bouncing the flash and hopefully if I get a chance change it around

Where's Peter Kay ?

It's great. I approve of the background too, I get a bit fed up with black or white backgrounds all the time.

Can we fix it ? :D... I'm not sure on the background colour, and the reflections off the helmets as has been said, but otherwise, it's nicely done.

my grandson would love them!.. he only has bob and the cat :)

I like the background, works with the colours.. as mentioned nice change from black or white.. nicely done!
