Hi
We are going to London tomorrow for 3 days. Doing the usual sites and staying in Kensington, what would you get out of the 2 options for travel.
Ta

Oyster, every time. Pay as you go is capped to the price of a travel card anyway and cheaper if you don't use as much

depends on how much you are looking to travel.. plus some stations with oyster can be an pain to check in/out.
Of course the capping on oyster helps , just ensure you top it up enough for each days travel as you cant get any refund once its on there

If you ever intend to visit London again - why not get an Oyster card ?

I've had one for years and I live in Scotland !! When I go down I just top the thing up as I arrive , what's left on it at the end stays on it ready for the next visit.

As above Oyster. Assuming you are staying centrally stations will be fine to tap in and out. Can't think of anyone I know who lives in London who does not have one. Have a great trip.

Maybe he means that if you have a waypoint in your journey you have to go and find one of the (pink) oyster machines to "touch in"?

.....but that doesn't happen often, all the others should be dead easy on your way in or out.

could be. Having said that Richmond is the only station I regularly pass through with those. It doesn't seem to make any difference if I touch them or not

no what i mean is some stations ( like wimbledon for instance ) you have to touch both in and out or you get charged double. its due to there being trams that come in and out of wimbledon which are rated differently in cost and there are a few other stations that are similar. before the cap took place ive got caught out several times and been overcharged.
ALso personally dont like oyster cos im always breaking the darn things and prefer to just have a day travel card.
Used to be a time when you could get a 3 day travel card but now thats gone, though i do know you can actually get a 7 day zone 1-2 travel card , use it for 3 days then go to any TFL office and get refund on the remaining. all depends on how far out your planning to travel of course but can be worth it even with the admin fee to refund it still works out cheaper.
7 day is £31.40
with discount you should get back around £10 which works out around £7 a day as opposed to £9 for travel card each day or a capped oyster
there are of course several options

a visitors oyster that puts exact amount on for day travel

Well, @silure130 says they're staying in Kensington and visiting the usual sites ... so they won't go anywhere near Wimbledon or Morden or Richmond unless they get terribly overtired, fall asleep on the Tube, and get carried out beyond all civilised society!

I'd agree Oyster card as @camerassassin says! ;)

It only makes a difference if a cheaper route sends you a specific way.

ie. if you don't touch in where you should, you will be charged the more expensive route.

If you live in London or are a regular visitor an Oyster card is the obvious answer but as a visitor do you really need the faff of a deposit, activation fee, sending off for a refund where necessary or do you just want to buy a travel card and throw it away when finished with. Whichever you chose I'm sure you'll have a great time anyway we were in Kensington last weekend... Nice area.

Just to mention, the price difference of the daily cap vs a travel card pays for your deposit with 3 days anyway.

It maybe better to travel by boat depending on what you are going to do

It maybe better to travel by boat depending on what you are going to do

certainly more entertaining and less chance of contracting influenza or knife borne diseases :) or just walk and enjoy the scenery and traffic pollution

Don't get in a taxi

We went a couple of months ago, my wife was ill last year and isn't steady on her feet so the tube was out, arrived at euston, got a taxi to earls court where our apartment was

The taxi driver said (after we'd started)

I carnt gaw fru central laaanndduunn cause vere's a march on so I gotta gew raund

The traffic was a nightmare, by the time we got there the fare was £32 , as I handed it over (without tip) I said welcome to London, I've only been here 1/2 an hour and it's cost me £32.

My wife and daughter are there this weekend, they've been walking everywhere.
12 miles on Friday, 14 yesterday.

Thanks everyone
We had a great time, purchased Oyster cards which we found easy to use. Enjoyed Camden Town markets, great meal last night in Soho, had a laugh on the bikes you hire. Saw some great cars .

Mistakes were leaving it to late to get tickets for the show we wanted and for the cruise down the Thames. We are going back soon to do what we missed this time.

And just think - you have your Oystercards - so just top up on your next visit and hop on and off buses and tubes wherever you like :)

I'm glad you had a great time

You can register your oyster card online so you can check amount, add top ups. Makes it so easy. I have one for my occasional visits
