Davy Jones dies aged 66 just got in from work and this is the first thing I saw. What a bummer the monkeys was the first album I ever bought I loved the tv show when I was young and their music always had a feel good factor for me. I've always thought they would have been a great act for the Sunday afternoon oldies slot at Glastonbury sadly that will never happen now.

Just read this on the Beeb.

I can't get with the fake sympathy, but cheers for the happy memories of watching/listening to the Monkees as a nipper.

All aboard!!

RIP, oddly enough his death struck me more than Whitney Houston or Amy Winehouse. Maybe it's because he always seemed so upbeat and cheerful when on TV.

What a shock!!
I shared a room with him when we were both in 'Oliver'. We were both on a National Tour, travelling around the country. Met up with him years later. Great bloke, cheeky!! Will be sadly missed.

When my wife told me Davy Jones had died I thought she was joking.

But then I saw her face...

RIP Davy

oh another z list celeb has shuffled off the mortal coil, and it's RIP again time.......

I wouldn't say z list, but hey, you're getting attention so job done I guess, well done.
Rip Davey.

Agreed, I just don't get the point of trashing a thread like this.

Well you're around 12 years yonger than me mate. During my younger years, the Monkees was repeated on the telly and was a part of my TV childhood. I was never a great fan, but a fan non-the less. Just the other night I was watching a program on BBC4 I think, about boy-bands through the past few decades, and Davy Jones was a contributer. He looked good and well for his age which made the news of his death all the more shocking I guess. I'm not a celebrity fan but recognise talent in people and he was cool in his day. Sad loss!

That Japanese Monkees tribute band I saw a few weeks ago were strangely correct....."now i'm a bereaver"

sad loss.

My point was another "celeb" dies and all of a sudden on internet fora, facespace etc.. it's all RIP etc etc.... as if people were his/her best friend.......

I wouldn't have said this, but i have to agree.

As fabs said, the loss of the maker of a fond memory is more sentient.

There's nothing wrong with wishing someone who has brought something to your life (even if it's only a few minutes of entertainment now and then) a peaceful rest when they die.

I 'might' take your point if folk were wailing and weeping and tearing their hair but a simple expression of condolence from a few forum members doesn't hurt you in any way and it is perfectly possible to avoid reading threads like this if they do offend you.

God it must be depressing being you!

Not in the slightest.

Maybe I am thick skinned, maybe I don't do sanctimonious bullpoo, maybe I just "get on with things"

Maybe I realise that a RIP on facespace / fora etc means diddly squat........

C'mon Lynton stop being so miserable....
Forums are an electronic equivalent of a water cooler Davy Jones' death makes those of us of a certain age reminiss for a time when we spent long holidays watching why don't you? White Horses, London Double Decker Bus Rhubarb and Custard, and the banana splits. He brought us a great deal of pleasure and I for one have hummed and had a reflective moment today-no wailing, no over excessive show of emotions, just a little reflection allow us that without your carping

My Mum went to school with him, some folk used to say I was the (à la George Best) the 5th Monkee.

My Mum said I was just a cheeky little monkey.

Why do people think I am miserable - i am about as far from miserable as you could possibly get on the excitement scale..

In fact I am more excited and happy than I was when I was 6 yrs old and on Xmas morning discovered pillowcases full of presents....

I just don't get "the forum tribute / homage to a dead celeb" :shake:

It really is that simple...

Then why post on them? :D

Then why post on them? :D

Erm to voice an opinion, not to say farewell/ RIP / Adios to unknown (to me) dead celeb who I have never seen / whose existence has not influenced me..... or do I need to be in a state of grievance to be able to post on such threads?

Yep I am sure his family will be upset / mourn.... however...

God help us when ER II croaks it.

Aren't you looking forward to it? Think of the potential for carping - you'll be able to tell everybody how little you care again. ;)

I think it's because they are being polite. :)

Whenever there is a RIP thread you post negative comments

*although half the VIPs mentioned in RIP threads wasted air that other people could make better use of :bang:

** does not include Mr D Jones, a much younger Mr Gubby watched The Monkees every week :D

I think it's because they are being polite. :)

"oh". I'd much more people said what they really think rather than feel the need to be polite.

I am a big boy with broad shoulders, and I promise not to be offended,,,

That's nice but this thread isn't about you. ;)

Perhaps it's time to let the thread get back on topic without too much of a song and dance?

Sorry to say, I sort of agree with Lynton. Take a look at facebook, SOME, not All are quick to post RIP or Like, what is there to like when someone has passed away I will never know.

Then, the very same people are sending each other sick jokes.... How sorry are you? Why post if you don't mean it???

I also grew up watching Davy, thanks for the memories and RIP.

There be no sick jokes from me!

Not meant to mean squat. Just the Monkees were part of my childhood. I have fond memories of them and am sad he passed as I have fond memories based around what he did. Did you post the same comments in the dead police officer thread?

For once, I concur Lynton.............:)

I'm of the age where I grew up with The Double Deckers, Champion The Wonder Horse, The Flashing Blade and The Monkees.

It's always sad when someone who gave me so much enjoyment passes away.

RIP

Andy

If this is "getting on with things", I'd hate to see carping mode.

No, because David Rathband was murdered by a psychopath. Comparing this poor chaps demise to a pop star who died peacefully in his sleep has just turned your condolence into banality.

Sorry to hear of Jones death, but as i have never met him, the 3500 people who died on the worlds roads yesterday have my sympathy as well.

What about every other person who died as a result of depression yesterday? Not going to win friends with this, but Rathband was simply wrong place, wrong time, and a support network that obviously failed.
