David Hobby UK Tour -tickets on sale now at TFC

Give it a rest Tomas, I'm bored of you sounding like a fish wife every time Garry makes a post because generally you disagree with it and generally you feel the need to waffle on as per your last two posts trying to prove a point over it.

Do you mind?

As Garry is entitled to post his opinion, I am entitled to mine.

If you want to make stupid comments like that, How about actually reading what I'm saying instead of being intimidated by the volume of text?

Other wise, Keep your nose out :bat:

Tomas,

Let's just leave it there shall we? - Without you assuming that just because I don't want to explain it all to you yet again that you must be right:)

There is nothing for you to explain (again), At least not without you repeating yourself and ignoring every point I call you on (again).

How about you accept you don't like the guy and cease your attempts at discrediting the resource?

Your argument is solely based on misinformation and wilful ignorance which you consistently push on numerous forums.

It's potentially unfair to the other members that may disregard the resource on your recommendation and lose out on a balanced and informed account.

Next time, I'm saving my time and reporting your posts.

Oo, another thread that's turned into bitching. Wouldn't be a proper thread on TP if it didn't turn into this time after time :) Only on TP!

Anyway, i've got 2 tickets for London and looking forward to it

Do you mind?

Nope, not at all, last time I checked it was a free forum providing we don't discuss politics or religion.

As Garry is entitled to post his opinion, I am entitled to mine.

Except every time Garry gives his opinion you have to go off on one telling him he's wrong and he has to grow up. So essentially you'd rather Garry expressed the opinion he's entitled to as long as it agrees with yours.

How about actually reading what I'm saying instead of being intimidated by the volume of text?

Keep you nose out :bat:

I have read it Tomas and I've read it many times before, that's the problem. What exactly would you like me to keep my nose out of? Would you like me to keep my nose out of you turning another thread into a spat between you and Garry? Just what everyone wants to read.

With all due respect James, Garry and I have a difference of opinion, he hasn't bitched and neither have I. Garry has not been rude to me and neither have I been rude to Garry. :)

We simply disagree.

This is part of forum life, someone offers an opinion and another offers theirs and thankfully they aren't always the same.

The only rude comments have been offered by the lovely Kevin ;):p

Kev,

If your bored and can only consider the above as a 'spat' then b****r off mate. Simple.

I would be really, really grateful if you stayed out of these discussions, disagreements whatever you prefer to call it, as you clearly don't read or more likely understand (or just can't be arsed with) what is being discussed.

Cheers.

Ok not bitching as in insults, just it seems most threads on TP always end up in an argument. I'm a member of probably 30+ forums and TP always decends to this and way off topic. Ho hum!

Then maybe appreciate that folk aren't simply agreeing which each other all the time here and sometimes, threads like this are of use to people.

It should be evident that Garry and I, have made an effort to remain civil here.

I think the actual volume of text is quite off putting to those who are not interested in the points being raised, but those that are will clearly recognise that Garry's sniping at this particular practise is not only immature and extremely incorrect, it's quite unfair to the other members that may disregard the resource upon his recommendation.

This thread, after all, was started as a means of alerting folk to the seminars and not for Garry to promote his unbalanced and archaic school of thought.

It all adds to the fun.

As far as David Hobby is concerned, I borrowed the DVD's and watched and enjoyed them so almost feel indebted to the man!

I was thinking about going, but something has stopped me from signing up, it's not the hundred quid, but probably the fact that I don't think I'll learn that much more that I learnt from the DVDs and it may be a day wasted...

I've booked, I'm going to the day at Birmingham, and I'm quite looking forward to it.

I read the blog, I've watched the DVD's and I still think there's stuff to be learnt from sitting in the same room as someone who's got a damn good reputation as an educator.

I've never seen in print or on DVD DH promote hotshoe flash as a replacement for studio gear, but what I have seen is his trying to get people to think of hotshoe flash in the same manner as studio flash, no reliance on TTL or other forms of automation, a case of understand the physics and think it through. This allows the mixing of studio and hotshoe together, and means that for the travelling location 'tog (like the newspaper shooter he started as) you don't need to lug a load of gear around constantly.

If you look over the blog, you'll see that in recent times he's expanded to cover other forms of portable lighting. Alien Bee's and profoto have made appearances.

He's a teacher, a good one has cut his teeth on journalistic assignments and has garnered respect from the likes of McNally for his approach to lighting eschewing TTL and allowing the use of low cost manual flash (Vivitar 283's and 285's)

Finding Strobist 2-3 years ago was a turning point for me. I couldn't afford studio lights, but I did have a couple of flashguns and after £50 on eBay for triggers stand and a brolly I was flying and my photography really leapt forward. From everything I learnt from those early days, I walked into my first studio 2 years ago and wasn't in the least bit intimidated, I "knew" what was going on, how light behaves and what to consider.

Education is essential, and sometimes you have to spend a bit to gain a lot.

Anyone received their tickets from TFC yet?

Finally someone said that at loud!
Cheers
Tomas

See you guys at the seminar in London!

Kris, maybe it is a steal if you have £120 or are willing to part with it. In the middle of a recession it's a lot to ask. Yes, I know costs have to be covered but he could probably fill the NIA every night for a fortnight if asked because he's so 'revered' and do it for £30 a head. ....

...or maybe I'm just being a tight northerner :)

yes you are a tight northerner ;) but the Edinburgh one still has places available and £30 quid would not even hire the room its in..

I really want to meet the guy, but I don't want to pay £117 when I bought his DVD a way back and can check strobist everyday on the web.... ok enough ranting; I haven't ruled out the London date - I did say I want to meet him :)

Damn! The London date is fully booked, guess I'll be waiting around outside playing with my..... flash.

Does anyone know the mixer venue for Leeds?

I've just got back from the Birmingham event, it was well worth the money, 6 hours of driving and the hotel bill. It's also resulted in me ordering a Paul C Buff PLM, and a SinghRay Vari-ND (f2.8 in blazing sunlight, with flash. :D )

David is a very modest man, and extremely amiable. Certainly a very down to earth guy who can talk about a lot more stuff than just lights.

The day is completely different to the Strobist DVD's, and he even stated that he thinks differently about creating lighting today than he did then and explained a few "epiphanies" he's had over the last few years (like Ring Flash....).

There was also an hour or so where we talked about methods of increasing the value of your photography, dealing with copyright issues, and using social media to your advantage (convinced me to start tweeting last night.)

As for the lighting, I was one of the test subjects for a demonstration of clamshell/beauty lighting and he made me look really good ;) It was good to see him working things through, building the light and experimenting to get a great shot.

If you're going to Leeds or Edinburgh, you're in for a treat, and I'd recommend going along to the mixer the night before for a little chat and banter.

Don't bother taking a camera, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Next up for me is a day with Joe McNally in July, slowly making up for not getting to GPP!

:D

Sounds good :)

I'd love to get along to the mixer the night before in Edinburgh, but it's just not practical :(

is that a clamshell I see before me? :suspect: :naughty:

Viewfinder do the PLM copy for much less, and they are available, unlike Buffs.

Wow!! That's a nice filter but damn... did you get a nice discount? :)

Haha, I was there Jason, and I although he made you look a lot better you may be stretching it a bit!!!! Good to see you, shame I didn't put a name to the face, and bloody hell what a good day it was! Inspiring, and you just couldn't hope to meet a nicer bloke too. He even left all of his kit out and encouraged us all to dig in and have a look at it, most people would keep their kit well out of the way!

Stretching it a lot I'd say, but he did make my extra chins disappear. It's a bit disconcerting seeing your face projected onto a 12ft high screen too!

It wasn't until after I'd come away that the penny dropped we'd chatted outside! :bonk:

Nope, they were selling nothing at the seminar, which was very refreshing, I ordered it online during the lunch break (the FedEx fee cost $50!!)

I've been hitting a particular issue with some of my location shoots and had the question lined up ready for the seminar. I'd though the answer to be ND filters, and the Singh-Ray came recommended against buying lots of fragile drop in filters.

It should allow me to be able to deliver images other local photographers can't / don't (unless they read this and catch on to what I'm doing... sshhhh, don't tell anyone...)

2 weeks to wait though!!!

Sounds like ya had a good day, initially looked as though I wouldnt make the mixer but assuming I can get away from work looks like I should make it along after all.

I was at Birmingham one. I learned a whole bag full of tricks with PDF's downloads, Worth it!

Hey Casey, was good to meet you! I don't think I actually asked what paper it is you work for?
And thanks for the reminder, in all my rushing about trying to catch up from missing a days work I'd completely forgotten about the downloads.

I had the pleasure of meeting David down in Dubai for Gulf Photo Plus; 2 day workshop with him. Absolutely fantastic. And now I see that he's possibly stuck in the UK a bit longer, as BA have cancelled his flight home... quick, nab him!
