Dave's 52 Project 2010 - Week 16 'Stare' added

Thanks all :)

Speed's doing nothing for me, but 'Chopped'...

Hilarious, scarey, fun, freeky... I don't know whether to laugh or be very scared. Great idea!

Yes, 'Speed' and 'Street' were cop out shots really as I wanted to catch up and not play any jokers! :D

Hi Dave,

Curves was a great capture. Amazing how many different interpretations there were on the theme.

Poetry is an excellent capture. Great lighting - how did you do it? This is probably the best of your shots next to Street for me.

Chopped is just bonkers.

I do like Street. Again, you can tell that thought has gone into the shot. Capturing the sea in the background, the line of cars leading you into the shot, and the lost soul in the lower left corner all draw you in. The only thing that niggles me is that the bloke and the sign wording looks a little soft. Where was your focus point, and what aperture did you shoot at? Did you choose your focus point with a reason?

Speed is a really good shot, but it doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. After the effort you'd put into the other shots, you set my expectations too high! :)

Ian.

Thanks Ian, the 'Street' shot was a bit of a quickly taken a shot just to catch up with my 52. It was taken with a 300mm lens at f/8.0. I might do it again properly actually as the shot is growing on me :)

6.52 - 'Present'

Not a very original idea but I really enjoyed setting up and taking this shot - it took a fair bit of mucking about to get the lighting right :)

How did the disembodied head open the present? :D Nicely taken and well lit and oh what a lovely present that would be.

Needs a bigger grin for what's written on the side of that lovely golden box:love:

Nice pressy Mate but you would have been better receiving a body for that floating head :D
Good idea Dave ;)

Thanks all I actually tried NOT to light my body, so from that point of view I got what I wanted, but I can now see what you mean!!!

Thanks Stuart, yes that's a good idea, will try that :)

Right, letters (from Ken Rockwell's site):
F: Nikon F mount
AF-S and SWM: Silent focusing with a motor built into the lens
VR: Vibration Reduction, for shooting still subjects without a tripod.
G: Gelded, meaning the aperture ring was omitted to save cost. Won't work on manual focus cameras.
ED: Extra-low Dispersion glass for sharper pictures.
IF: Internal Focusing Nothing moves externally as you zoom or focus.

I actually like the shot a lot. If you'd have lit yourself from behind you could have given your body an outline.

All the letters on the box have left me somewhat confused (being a Canon tog). What's FagF-s VR ED all about then

LOL! As another Canon tog I sympathise!

Good shot, Dave.

Phil

Missed the Hawk... how did I do that... Stunning shot

Present - A good idea Dave, but I agree with Alby... how you gonna use that lens without arms  I really like the effect you've created here.

Hi Dave,

I seem to have totally missed your thread for quite a few weeks in a row. I can't even claim to have popped in and seen your shots without commenting - it's totally passed me by somehow :cuckoo:

Some great shots there too. Poetry is beautifully executed; chopped made me laugh and street really does illustrate how close the docks are to those houses.

Your speed shot is my favourite so far - absolutely gorgeous image.

I love the idea of present, but I agree with the others about the dark body not quite working.

If you'd have lit yourself from behind you could have given your body an outline.

and I think that would have been a very good idea.

Agreed that the disembodied head looks a bit silly, so here's an edit which I hope is slightly better (especially for Alby as disembodied heads are his pet hate! :D) I might re-shoot this shot when I have a bit more time with a back light as suggested by Stuart.

Much prefer the re-edit Dave- less of a 'Red Dwarf' feel to it :D.

Just catching up Dave. You lucky boy, what a great present! Moody lighting and funny. Made me chuckle!

Love the people shot. The timing was spot on with the 3 in a row and the alternate strip.

Cheers, Rob

Super people shot Dave and the re-edited floating head shot is much much much better

Nice footballing conga you've captured there. Nice and sharp and good detail. Well done

Psresent - when I could drag my eyes away from that glorious golden box, I really liked this - even without a body  But I must admit the edit makes for a more coherent picture. Very nice indeed - and not just the lens.

People - well captured. If I'm being really picky, I think you could have take this from an even lower angle (but I bet it was wet and muddy), but I still love it. All the components came together - and you caught the moment.

So that's what all those letters mean ;)... People is excellent, nicely lined up and the alternating colours of the shirts work really well.

Thanks Rob, it was a nice present - to myself!

Thanks Jean. The football one was taken at 200mm from the other side of the pitch (and it was muddy!)

Thanks John :)

8.52 - Mechanical

Well, a loose interpretation of this week's theme - it's all I've had time to shoot! I call this 'The Mechanics Of Sailing'!!!

Afraid I wouldn't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to boats. It's a busy shot... but the strong verticals stand out. Certainly not your best of this thread.

A bit busy but I like the symmetry of it all. The ropes at the front ground it a bit so my eyes don't get too lost :)

Thanks guys, yes, agree it's a bit busy, but that was what I was after - trying to show the complexity of all the ropes and pulleys.

Dave, love the symmetry in that, and it's complex indeed. You know what might have worked well (if you could get on board of course)... low down along the lines to the pulleys and leavers on one of the sides... As you can probably tell... I know about as much about sailing as Lee does :D...

D'ya know what else keeps hitting me about this shot...

As I scroll down to see whether I've commented, the images whizzes past me and I am caught in two minds... did it say BIG SHIRT, OR BIT S**T?

Thanks John, yes a lower angle would've been better, but it just wasn't possible.

 Sorry to disappoint - It's Big Spirit!

Not doing it for me Dave but then I've never been into boats!

Hi Dave,

A week behind here I'm sorry.

People : I hate football and I hate shots of people, so you'd think that you'd be onto a loser with me this week
But I actually really like it.

I admire the way that you've captured the motion and got such a sharp shot. The composition and colours are spot on - just love the way that you've caught them lined up like that. And I'm not sure whether it was a foggy day or if you've done something to the background in PP but that really works for me too

Mechanical : Very strong lines, extremely sharp and lots to look at. As a personal observation I'm finding it a bit too symmetrical for my taste, but that really is just a personal thing rather than a technical criticism.

Thanks Sarah :)

The background in the football shot is actually the sea. I managed to find a sloping football pitch that sloped down towards The Solent. Not very good for football, but great for action shots with uncluttered backgrounds :)
