What a fantastic idea this is to get everyone using their kit regularly. I'm hoping this will inspire me to think outside the box more...

Can't wait to submit my first effort - all feedback welcomed (of both sorts!)

Thanks - well here goes. Here's my first effort. I was trying to emphasise the curves/circles on a wall of straight lines. It is a bit of an eyesore on the side wall of our house so if something positive comes out of it (other than hot air) then I'll be happy!

No need to be gentle with the comments - I know it isn't amazing, so I'd like your comments to help me improve in any way possible!

Taken with 17-40L, 17mm, F4, 1/3200, ISO400.

Thanks Mick, I wasn't sure whether to leave the sky in or crop it out, I think it helps to give it some scale in a way.
 
This is great Dave. Colour are brill and it almost makes me feel like summer is coming! Sharp and there isnt anything I dont like about the crop. Cant wait to see more :)
 
Hi Dave,

What a creative way to make use of a boring, mundane object! I was initially going to suggest cropping the sky out, but after scrolling up and down a couple of times I think I prefer it with it in. :thumbs:

Great idea to use the contrast of the straight lines on the wall against the curvy vent . . . perhaps it might be worth trying it in B&W to make it more about this concept of lines and angles rather than an image of a wall and vent? :thinking:

p.s. I like the angle too. It's making me slightly dizzy if I look at it for too long, but in a good way.
 
I like it too, there's a good contrast between the curves and the straight lines. Good choice of subject :)
 
Hi Dave. That's a great start to your 52. Well-spotted. I love the angle and the dof and it works well as it is. :thumbs:

But in the spirit to working on ideas, the only suggestion I can make is to crop the sky out (the brickwork is a great contrast to the curves of the vent) but include all of the vent's shadow (if possible), so the curves are echoed on the brickwork. I hope that makes sense! :)

hey cool shot - it has contrast with the lines and the curves. I looked at different crop positions not much I could see with the angle, one suggestion is inside of Lightroom (if you use it) click the crop tool then press O it will scroll through different composition lines, which will help you see where tension and points of interests lie.

If you dont have Lightroom you can still find these online - rule of thirds, golden mean etc ;)
 
Thanks for all your comments so far - I'll post a B&W version and also try it with the sky cropped out (and perhaps some alternative cropping as well). Really encouraging to see so many comments as I thought it might be a bit bland when I shot it!
 
Like it Dave!! Nice contrast of straight against curvy. Wonder how the B&W version will look. Great start mate:thumbs:
 
I like having the sky as its contrast highlights the lovely colour of the brick. But it might be better if you moved slightly to the left so that you could get the whole of the shadow of the vent in.

If you convert to B/W do experiment with the effect of different colour filters. E.g. with a red filter the sky would go very dark, while the wall would be light with lots of texture.

Nicely exposed although I think I would have aimed to have the flue on the intersection of thirds!

Right, here goes for Week 2. Breakfast in our household is one of my favourite times of the day (especially when it's a greasy spoon :naughty:).

I wrote this short poem and took the accompanying photo this morning, so a bit late for my entry this week, but better late than never.



Family Breakfast

Fruit, cereals, crumpets and jam
Pyjamas and dressing gowns
When little fingers want my toast
It always lands face down

Thanks - I wasn't sure if it was a "strong" enough photo without the smiley cutlery, so added them in.

No way I could be a poet though - those 4 lines took me longer than you'd think!
 
Love the poem, love the shot, I want that cutlery!

Week 1 shot I am not usually a fan of crooked shots but this works and I like it. I like it with the sky, I like it as you posted it first - they sky gives it direction, you know you are looking *up*. The brick colours, nice and bright, contrast very well with the exhaust and help to emphasise the subject of the shot.

Hey Dave, I really like number 1 curved, again im really impressed youve turned a really ordinary subject into a very creative pic, i also think it looks better with the sky in! Week 2 is very good and fits the poem well! Welldone you :D

DOF works really well, great texture on the edge of the toast and I love that splodge of jam.

I hadn't actually noticed the smileys until I read that, but I agree they're great and do add a lift and bit of humour to the shot.

Thanks everyone. I had to toast the bread twice to get it brown enough to give it some contrast! I also had to use a good dose of cream cleaner to get all the jam off the worktop as it had been there for quite a while as I tried a few different angles etc - it was almost a very expensive photo :bonk:

Week 3 - Chopped. Hmmm. I'm sure this one has done a dozen times by other people, but I was walking around town this morning with my new GF1 and spotted these on a market stall.

The GF1 really is a cracking little thing - very discreet but capable of proper photos.

This one was taken with the 20mm pancake lens, F1.8, 1/500th, ISO100. I took several others which showed a shallower depth of field but settled on this one because I think it works fairly well with the 'thirds' rule. Many of the leeks are in the same focal plane all over the frame but I could hardly start rearranging them all !

Had a friendly chat with the market stall lady as well, she was more than happy for me to shoot their goods!

Well coming from Wales I can't fault a shot of leeks can I?

Nice idea and good colours.
The only thing that lets it down for me is the large leek on the top of the pile. That one looks most prominant to me and I want it to be the main focal point, so the fact that it's oof is irritating me slightly.

Nicely seen and full of detail and colour but just needs that little extra DoF to keep all the ends in focus. Next time pick some up as if you're buying before rearranging them :)
 
Catching up, Dave!

1) Really like this shot - turns the mundain into a work of art.
2) Not keen really - doesn't grab me.
3) Nice idea & good shot - agree with others that the top leek should either be in focus or absent.

Curved - I like this shot with the sky in and with the sky out, although I don't think that the cloning of the brickwork (which seems a little out of line) on the sky out one is necessary though, I think if you just cropped it tighter it would work better.

Poem - I like this shot and agree that the smiley faces really add another dimension to it.

Chopped - Not so sure about this one, as per other comments I think it's the two leeks that are out of focus that spoil it.

Luck forward to seeing more from you in the coming weeks. :)
 
Poem, the toast and jam seem a little dark to me, but that's probably just my lappy display. I agree about the smiley faces though ;)...

The leeks is a good shot, and they are clearly chopped, but I think I agree with Irus, the two OOF are a bit intrusive... I think cropping them out would work though.
 
Dave the toast shot works great in B&W and the humour injected with the cutlery smiley's compliments the poem. Made me laugh recalling memories of sticky fingers of children. The leeks are well taken but would of liked either all in focus or a tighter crop maybe,:thumbs:.....Mick
