Dave Allen

Perhaps, but certainly very funny and immensely entertaining.

Inherited my love of Dave Allen from my dad.
Happily, though much of his material is not easily available, I have a rather large collection. :-)

I like Bob Newhart too.

All funny, but my personal favorite was Rik Mayall. He constantly had me in stitches even when he wasn't playing up for the cameras.

I, too, found Rik Mayall hilarious, along with his partner in crime, Ade Edmondson.

Add Kenny Everett, Ben Elton and Phil Cool to the list.

Dave Allen was great. Some of the current crop of alleged comedians (Miranda Hart, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Millican) would do well to learn from Dave Allen and others of that era.

Steve.

Steve.

Comics of today are just amateurs in comparison.

Due to my tender years  I was quite young when Dave Allen was coming to the end of his career but I can still remember a few of his jokes/stories after all these years. Such a dry delivery style and probably one of the first breed of mainstream observational comedian.

The two "jokes" that I mainly remember are about his daughter having a boyfriend and him commenting on them being in the bedroom together and he was feeding her rabbit when in his opinion the boyfriend should have *been* with the rabbit and his daughter should have been feeding him and the other was about cars that talk and tell you what the problem is but after all the warnings about oil, petrol, servicing they say "you can't afford to run me can you"

And him speaking about his teenage son's friend calling.... "Is Ed in.......?"

I'm not a fan of Miranda Hart, but slapstick has been a valid form of comedy for a very very long time and didn't do Norman Wisdom any harm. :-)
Because it's not appealing to you doesn't make it bad.

I watched a bit of Jackie Chan's Medallion last evening with Lee Evans co-starring. IMO, he spoiled it with the hammy overacting (not that the whole film is one of JC's best!) and his ever present Norman Wisdom impression. Last time I saw an LE stand up show on TV he combined the NW impression (with the trademark LE excess sweatiness) with more effing and blinding than Frankie Boyle.

And thats how he fails the test imho - relying on the profanity for embellishment.....

There are few Comics today that make me laugh out loud with any measure of consistency.

That does not mean I dont like any others but just not as much as the late greats!

Al Murray, Pub Landlords, audience interaction scenes are consistently the funniest interaction "bits" of any comic I've seen. I wouldnt say he's my favourite but comes close.

The older I get the harder it is to find comedians that really make me lose the plot laughing. The most recent one was Stu Francis Tour de Francis DVD, highly recommended.
