Data SIMs for iPads

I was wondering if anyone would be able to recommend data SIMs for an iPad. I would like to get a preloaded data SIM but unsure which network to go with. I'm looking for something with good/excellent network coverage. My phone is with gif gaff (O2 network) so I would like to go with another network as coverage can be poor at times. So far I've found a 12 month 12GB on three for £24 or a 6 month 12GB on EE for £35 (my memory have it for £25 but it's out of stock). A 12 month 24GB EE sim can be had for £61.

My question is, is EE worth double the price of three? 1Gb per month would probably be find for most of my mobile internet used but I would like something with good coverage. I'm not adverse to paying the extra with 2GB monthly data.

I find that three has been brilliant for years when only considering data. It obviously depends on your location but I can only speak from my experience.

Consistently cheaper too!

Partly I'm thinking on using it at far flung uk places (skomer, Lake District, Scotland). Im sure three would be fine in Bedfordshire and 12 months at 1gb would be excellent value on three.

speaking from personal experience I find that EE's coverage is poor on Skomer, large lumps of Scotland & the Lake district :)

Check each networks coverage maps. You may find you'll need more than one provider. But check sim's from Sure who provide mobile services on the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.

Sure customers roam in the UK (the islands are technically not part of the UK), so their sim's will find any network in the area. You will be paying roaming rates, however.

I have a number of Sure prepay sim's for when I need mobile phone service at any cost, and a pre-paid 3 data sim for UK and abroad, as 3 charges the same in most if not all the countries it operates in.

As to tethering, good suggestion but check it out per network for T&Cs, plus check if your phone can tether and make/receive calls at the same time. Many can't.

I have got the 3 one in my Samsung s2 i paid 21.99 i think from my memory.
12gb for 12 month.

seems fine

Are you sure the iPad is not locked to a specific network?

The one I bought locked to the first network I used with it.

How about changing your mobile phone sim to one that includes tethering? My £20 a month to 3 includes all you can eat data and tethering.

You might want to check your small print, Three don't offer all you can eat tethering anymore. They cancelled the price plans that included it and forced users to move to the newer plans that offer AYCE data on handset but limited tethering.

@rob-nikon, I use EE in my phone and buy the cheap Three SIM cards for my iPad, they aren't as good, coverage wise, nor do they offer the speeds of EE (the Three sim seems to be on 3G a lot of the time where EE is on 4G) but they are good enough for occasional use (email, browsing, etc).

You're right. I don't use it you see. Though if I did, I have 30,000mb left.

yeah they only offer 30Gb tethering now :D

They only offer up to 30GB ;), some of the new plans are/were as low as 4GB for tethering (the original new 200 min AYCE data plan as an example).

EE are way expensive now, I think me and the wife will PUK off next time.
We are on SIM only now anyway.

What's expensive to you?

I pay EE £19.99 a month for unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 16GB of data, I think it's a pretty reasonable price.

not really thats more than my car insurance.

Vodafone is doing 20GB with unlimited calls and text including whilst roaming albeit only 2 GB of data is whilst roaming per month. For £20. For a pound more I think that is reasonable.

I looked day before yester and all are around the same figure. So expensive is relative. It comes down to the whole of the package I think, for us we only have signal with Vodafone so the convenience of being able to use the voice minutes at home makes sense. I appreciate that is not relevant for an iPad :)

Unless you have manufacturers wifi built in with a data subscription it is a rather pointless comparison for value :god:

Your car insurance offers a mobile phone service? I hadn't heard of that happening before...

What minutes/texts/data do they give you?

I've actually got one of this sims (just from before they offered the 2GB roaming) and find the service offered pretty crap in comparison to EE (which shows how service can differ across the country). In the north east I often see slow 3G or even worse 2G EDGE which may as well be no service for data use it's so slow.

Even when it got 4G is was way slower than EE. When I saw the EE offer a few months ago I decided to sign up with them again. I can cancel the Vodafone sim in January, thank God.

Apples and Cardboard much, a rather random comparison.

FYI, if your car insurance is <£19.99 a month, you really should be paying it yearly as its cheap as chips.
Why pay interest on something so cheap?
