Data Recovery

Neil it's a small portable drive. How would you do this and then what can you do once removed?

thanks john

Check for screws otherwise prise it apart.

Once you have the drive out either pop it into a desktop computer or purchase a hard drive enclosure for the drive the (~20 quid).

Many external hard drives have a USB to SATA/PATA module inside and its often this that goes wrong. You can buy empty portable hard drive enclosures so open up the old one and slip the drive into the new one and test it out.

i picked up an enclosure (2.5'') for about a tenner brand new when my laptop HD died - i could still access 90% of the data when i put the HD in the new enclosure

If you are still struggling try R-Studio which I'm in the middle of using for a friend to recover her photos from a drive full of sector and cylinder (I think?) errors. I tried Pandora and other free ones but even the surface scans didn't help. I contacted a pro recovery company and explained the situation and they didn't want to know as it sounded too far gone to be worth their time and recommended r-studio.

So I then tried r-studio and aborted at about 10% (computer was having issues from another program so had to reset) and was able to recover many of the photos from the damaged parts. I'm hoping now that I let it run to 100% it will get most of them back.
