About 6 months ago I was looking to get a dash cam. I couldn't find one that I wanted and forgot about it.

After watching last nights TV program, Car crash Britain, I started looking again. I can't find one that doesn't plug into a fag lighter.

Anyone know or got a rechargeable battery one, that is good?

Not sure how long a battery only one would last, the constant recharging could end up being a pain.

The Mini 0803 is a great little camera for the price and it's pretty straight forward to hardwire into the fuse box using a few add-a-circuits. Better still is to get the Power Magic Pro also and have it running all the time.

You can use a GoPro (or clone as I do*) as a dash cam but the batteries are only good for 30mins or so. What's wrong with getting one that plugs in?

* My clone is an SJ4000 and it can be set up as a dash cam proper but does have to be plugged in for that to work.

I was going to suggest the same one. I did a lot of research on them a while back and I found the mini 0803 or the 0805 the best value for money and also the best picture quality.

Got one on my watch list on Ebay as we speak, just have to make sure it comes with the GPS base, if you want GPS that is.

either that or a Mobius is good also.

Don't need to charge them up, just plug them into your fag lighter in the car or hard wire it.

Glad you brought the subject up. I have been thinking about investing in one. Some general advice and info here:-

Sample footage from the mini 0805 which I'm going to buy soon. If you watch the video go full screen and change quality to 1440p.

Thanks for all the help. I don't want the wires hanging down. Simple as that. Might go for a wired one then.

I got a Garmin Virb ELITE for the mountain bike, popped it in the car to try it out.

Its better than a Go Pro for what I need, has a built in GPS and a three hour battery life.

But for the car I'd rather buy a proper dashcam and wire it with an "Add A Circuit"

Route the wires behind the interior trims... along the headlining, down the pillar etc

When you have a hard wired cam installed, do you remove it when not in the car, the same as you do for a satnav (usually plugged into the cigarette lighter though) , or do you leave it in the car? I haven't heard of the scroat population breaking into cars to steal them but it wouldn't surprise me.

They all come on a mount of some kind, the GoPro types come with multiple different mounts, dedicated dash cams normally have a tripod mount thread so yes you can remove them if you're parked in an iffy area.

ive never seen those "add a circuit" things before. just ordered a couple, cheers :plus1:

@Trev4

The hard wired one use something akin to a small docking station so that remains hardwired and stuck to the windscreen, just slip the camera out.

@Tirpitz

Yeah they simplify adding circuits, you still need to ground it. You can add a cigarette socket for example, cable tie it behind the kick panels and run your 12v device there rather than have it occupy your 12v/cig socket on the dash.

Sorry, I meant the 0805.

Oh look, another dash cam thread. This forum needs a search facility!

I don't mind new threads, it can keep things current and sometimes info can get lost in old threads if they get too big.

Either way, both 0803 and 0805 are great for the money. I was unsure about tthem to start with because you normally only find them on Amazon or fleabay, but a lot of good reviews and videos.

I think the 0803 had some overheating problems which the 0805 fixed?

Not sure, I'm mainly ordering the 0805 for the 1440p video and it's still under £100.

Something I've been considering also. Someone at work had one per entry wired in and it sits behind his mirror. You can't see it easily, but it logged everything with GPS info. Turned out to be very useful when the car went in for its first service and came out with the report it needed new tyres and brakes, which he thought strange on a new car. Reviewed the camera footage and the mechanic on the test drive absolutely ragged it, redlined all gears, wheelspin, used a quarter of a tank of fuel in under 20 miles, 60 in a 30, 100mph elsewhere.
Md of the dealership didn't have a leg to stand on and it cost them a lot of money.

Not the only one:-

I'm also interested and have been looking at the Roadhawk HD and Blackvue 600.

But then I started wondering what options were available for 'incar cctv' - in other words you just have a small camera in the front and rear and the recorder sits in the boot/glovebox.

Not really found any that do 1080p and GPS though....

Might have to buy 2 of the above instead.

I got a 0803 with gps hardwired it to the car, very easy to do with providing you get the add a circuit. My reason for the 0803 is it sits behind the rearview mirror, from outside you have to be up pretty close to it to see it. cables tucked away neatly in roof lining and door pillars. the more expensive ones have motion detect so if someone bumps your car while parked it will start recording. Although the 0803 has motion detect I've read it is not wise to use it on the 0803, it means you have to faff about changing modes when driving so I just leave it off. The expensive ones nice as they are are usually quite bulky and easy to see, if left on display while car is unattended they might be a target for a junkie looking to fund their next fix.

There is a smaller one still, the Mobius but it doesn't have gps last time I checked.

I've just ordered an 0805, looks great on sample videos. The Mobius is also good, but that's more of a budget "gopro" style camera rather than a dash cam. With the mobius it's the good video for the cheap price that a lot of people choose to use it as a dash cam.

I have a few GoPro's but I don't like to use them in the car because it's too much faffing around taking them in and out all the time. They're not exactly "stealthy".

I did find a site that does dvr for vehicles but it may only be D1 resolution. But for commercial application where you need to store weeks of footage I am happy with the resolution trade off. But in my car where I'm in control and not relying on a driver to own up to an accident then two 1080p cameras is fine and cheaper.

Been looking at lots of dashcam reviews and I was just about to seek out a Mini 0805.

They seem to be marketed under various names:-
Splash E Tech
E-Prance
Monkton

Presumably that is just cosmetic decoration.
Also, there are quite a few models.
I will want one with GPS.

Any good reason to go for one with internal memory and micro SD card as opposed to using one without internal memory plus micro SD card.

Comments appreciated. I expect the above points apply to earlier models too.

From my reading the only downside to the 0805 is that the mount uses an adhesive sticker on the windscreen. In itself that is not a problem, but getting the cam off the mount without tearing the sticker off could be.

This is the one I ordered. I think the different names just depends who sells them because they look the same even with a different name.

If you want GPS you have to make sure you buy the GPS mount because it's an added extra, this kit in the link comes with everything. The GPS base and adhesive pad are stuck to the windscreen, but if you want to remove the camera you can just take it off the base instead of ripping the adhesive pad off, unless you want to remove it permanently that is.

As of the internal memory i'm not sure. i just use a micro SD card.

Edit, forgot the linky http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301239330533?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Their strong stickers, mine cam comes off no problem without affecting the sticker, only way your going to get that sticker off is either strong fishing line and slide it between sticker and windscreen, as using dental floss. Get yourself a new micro sd card 32 gb, their cheap enough these days, internal memory is not really enough might get wiped after a few mins, no good if a incident happened you need to keep, by the time you drive home it will be wiped from internal memory. vids are in loops, 1 min, 3 min can't remember the other one. Different makes have different recording loops. When card is full it deletes the oldest vid and starts again & so on from there.

Only problem you might come across removing the cam all the time is the brass contacts might wear and become loose, if I need to check something I just remove the sd card in situ, take in the house to view on pc.
My 0801 shows e Prance when firing up, Ambarelli is also the same

I'll ask my colleague what he uses but the link by cave dweller looks interesting.

Mini 0806 for a extra 2 quid. Joovuu supposed to have a decent reputation, they've been in the States a long time, recently started a branch at this side of the puddle. From what I've read I believe the 0806 has a better lens and night videoes are better though I've never used one, might be worth checking out before , even Amazon. Ebay 0805 is quite expensive

What ever one anyone goes for, I think we can all agree with a minefield out there with dash cams lol. There's just so many about and a lot of info on each one, even the cheapo ones.

It does look pretty good and I've been shopping about for a few months now, finally decided to get one now. Check out the video I posted earlier in this thread. Make sure to click HD and change quality to 1440p. Best picture I've seen from a dash cam for <£100

I never take mine off and never had a problem. You don't really see it unless looking out for it. Even the main dealer mechanics never saw it for a long time but was funny when he finally saw it!

Another good thing about the 080x cams is you can buy the latest one and easily replace the current one without having to remove all the wiring because you can use the current mount or use the new mount which will use the usb power cable that you have already installed
