Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

Good set Bill, like you I really like the last one as well.
Thanks Dave, in retrospect I guess I could have interpreted the light coming through the blinds as "dappled"...

Good set Bill.
That last one is indeed very good - it's a small glass isn't it?
Speaking of Nanaimo, in the 1880's or 90's one of my Dad's uncles (or great uncle?) emigrated with his family and found work in the mines.
I still have a letter he sent his mother one Christmas.
Are the mines still going?
Thanks Peter, yes a small glass of water.
The mines in Nanaimo have all closed. Most of the mining in the province takes place in the interior and the north as well as in the Rocky mountains bordering Alberta.

Light is captured really well on the stones, great shot
Thanks Alan!

Week #35 - Snapper's Choice

Always look forward to Snapper's Choice and this time (because I was strapped for time) I thought that I would make the best of it and have some fun doing what I am currently enjoying the most...multi-exposure.

At the east end of Gastown is Hotel Europe, an example of the flatiron style of architecture. Built in 1908/09 you can read about it here.
Not my best image but fun to mess around with. 9 images 1 head-on and four each from multiple points of view on each side.

Sep 05-22-3.jpg

At the other end of Gastown, in the plaza above the Sea Bus terminal there is a spot where one can lean over a railing and shoot the crowds as they walk past. This again was not one of my best images but I kind of like the idea and think that I'll go back again when I have more time (maybe when it's raining and there are lots of umbrellas out). 8 images with people from one image "painted" in:

Sep 05-22-4.jpg

In the same plaza there is this spherical water fountain. I did a full Pep Ventosa inspired walkaround of the feature and taking shots as I went for a total of 26 images. I like how this one turned out:

WOW what a great set! Very creative :)

Hard to choose a fave so I won't :)

Nice to see the Pep Ventosa technique used (now that I know what it is ;) )

It's definitely an interesting style that makes for unusual images. Not yet managed to give it a go, but looking at this, I feel like maybe I should. Very nice.

Excellent multi's Bill.
I've tried it before but never got results this good.
I like them both.

Are they handheld?

Really nice set, number 3 is my favourite and number 1 is a close 2nd. Great job and may have inspired me to have a go at ME

Cracking set Bill! Very creative, and well executed. You're chosen shot is fab, but the building in #1 runs it a close second.

Excellent. Some really creative shots. On first glance I thought your shot was a dandelion. :)

I like the 1st and 3rd Bill which I think the technique you used really works.

For the 2nd, the viewpoint does not work for me, but I can see why you took ite multi exposure for the people.

Pete

Send me an IM Kell and I'll walk you through what I do. I'd be happy to pass on all of my (very secret ;)) tips and tricks...

Excellent multi's Bill.

Thanks Peter, all the images were handheld. The Olympus has one of the best IBIS systems.

Really nice set, number 3 is my favourite and number 1 is a close 2nd. Great job and may have inspired me to have a go at ME
Thanks Jim, send any questions that you have about the technique and I'll give it a go trying to answer them.

Cracking set Bill! Very creative, and well executed. You're chosen shot is fab, but the building in #1 runs it a close second.
Thanks Simon, I'm hoping to redo the building shot when the lighting is better.

Thanks Helen, now I can't look at it without thinking "Dandelion!"...

Yes, I don't disagree Pete. I'm not really happy with that one. I think that if I can get back there while it's raining and there is enough foot traffic I might be able to come up with something better.

Gosh I really love all of these Bill. So creative! I'd have been completely unable to choose, they're all great.

I think the viewpoint is fine on no.2. There is a real sense of movement as people pass below.

Week #36 - 'scape

We were invited to a small gathering at a friends condo. The building she is in is 36 stories tall and she had booked the common room at the top of the building for our little party. This is a pano shot of one of the views looking North over an estuary of the Fraser River. It is cropped substantially due to the limitations of our uploads.

This was the view from the Southwest towards the coast:

They are great pictures, very nicely composed and with lovely colours in the background. Good timing for the theme there.

Two great shots. I think I prefer the vista in the first with the sky in the second :)

Week #37 - looking up

As usual (when I have the time) I took a walk around Vancouver.

Firstly looking up at the Proud Youth statue in False Creek with the sun behind it. The statute is a actually bright red but I thought that the b&w looked kind of cool:

Sep 08-22 smaller south-18.jpg

One of my favourite buildings to shoot, the One Wall Centre:

Sep 08-22 smaller south-13.jpg

Another of my favourite features to shoot at the Vancouver Art Gallery:

Sep 08-22 smaller south-5.jpg

Looking up the stairs at the law courts (I took a closer shot of this young lady that's a much better image but doesn't really fit the theme):

Sep 08-22 smaller south-11.jpg

And tourist looking up at the Gastown Steam Clock waiting for the whistle to go off:

Sep 08-22 smaller south-7.jpg

And finally, back to the stairs at the law courts, a father looking up at his child (not the one in the picture), the light was fantastic, just basic adjustments in Lightroom:

Great shot Bill. As you say the lighting is perfect. You've caught his concentration very well.

Super street shot Bill :)

More interesting photos from your location Bill, all equally good in their own way.
Lucky with the light in your chosen shot.

Pete

A lovely set, but your chosen shot is just fab. Fits the bill so well and the lighting is lovely, especially with the dark background. Suits the mono treatment too.

Very lucky, it was a mid-day shot with some harsh light. Thanks Pete

Another cracking set Bill, and your chosen shot is perfect for the theme.
Thank you Simon

Thanks Bebop, I found the colour shot too distracting.

#38 - Electronic

My better half (much, much better half) is away this week visiting her sister in California so I thought that it would be a good opportunity to go downtown in the evening and shoot some electric lights along Granville Street and some of the surrounding area.

I liked how this food truck had these bright white lights going even though it wasn't dark yet:

Sept 27-5.jpg

The street here is lit from below and either the glass is tinted green or the lights are green:

Sept 27-10.jpg

At the corner of Granville and Georgia is this brightly lit sign:

Sept 27-12.jpg

Back to a favourite standby, the underside of this art installation has yellowish lights:

Sept 27-13.jpg

This is one of the entrances to the Vancouver Public Library and I thought that I would play with ICM. This is two images, one is an ICM shot and the other is a static shot of the same scene. I layered them and painted out areas of the ICM image to reveal the two people and the lighted entryway:

Sept 27.jpg

Looking Up:
I like the one you’ve chosen Bill and I really love the whole atmosphere of the one of the Steam Clock. The light is lovely.

Electrical:
A nice set again. I do like 725 but the last is terrific. Lovely processing!

Cracking image Bill and great processing.
I also like the street lit from below shot, highlighting the shoe sole.

Clever clogs of the week award for the chosen shot!

I'm not certain which is the chosen shot as I've not come from main thread. They are all great, but I love love love the ICM shot. The minimalism and the two people. Their position within the frame and the lines on the floor leading you in. Really nice.

Thanks Pete, the Steam Clock is a favourite place and I liked the early morning light. I did like how the 725 shot ended up but, for me, the library shot just edged it out.

Cracking image Bill and great processing.
I also like the street lit from below shot, highlighting the shoe sole.
Thanks Peter, I was lucky with the guy walking past so close to me. I think he was a little three sheets to the wind...

Clever clogs of the week award for the chosen shot!
Thanks Dave, for an unplanned, taken-on-the-fly shot, I think it turned out well.

Thanks Bebop, that is my chosen shot. I appreciate the kind words.

Some great shots you've captured. It's hard to choose but I do like the ICM effect on your chosen shot.

#39 Depict a Song

Thought that I'd try to find some shot to represent a couple of my favourite bands.

I often find myself humming/singing this song when I'm out and about: Sublime - What I Got

Oct 04-22-13.jpg

A band that I think is underrated, Flobots - Handlebars

Oct 04-22-6.jpg

And, one of my favourite songs of all time, I always think of paddlewheelers when I hear the chorus: Tina Turner - Proud Mary:
