Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

Oh dear, I’ve just taken a similar shot and was about to post.
Great minds think alike, Bill.

Now, is yours”better” than mine, and dare I post it?
Go for it Peter! There is not "better", just different.

Great idea… and you too @Peter123 :) I wish I’d thought of that!
Loving the motion.
I originally thought of taking dust from the vacuum and tossing it through the dappled light in my backyard (theme plus tech) but just didn't get around to it...

Yep that's another theme done and dusted :D
Thanks Dave

That’s a great shot, nice context.
Thank you Alan

Nice shot - but it must say something about me that I was thinking where's the credit card and rolled up £50?
I never taking incriminating shots of my illicit activities...

Nice shot Bill, not being much of a baker it never crossed my mind, but I like the movement of the flour as it drops.

Pete
Not my best effort Pete, but it did get me closer to the magic goal of 52 :)

Playing comment catch-up.

Snappers Choice - The flowers with colourful background are my favourite but they are all worthy contenders.

1/2 - I had just quickly read the description and initially failed to see the refectory the shutter speed. Which did leave me confused as to what theme they related to :)

I like the mono rotating "cage" image the best, the IBIS on your camera is impressive, I would need to upgrade to gain that ability.

Post - All your images are interesting, I like the colour pop on the last one.

Water - A great set, I like the more abstract ones the most, with the best image my favourite.

Handles - The lighting on the mono image is great.

Dust - Well captured image, I've tried something similar in the past but never had anything as sharp, is it taken handheld?

Thanks Stuart, the IBIS in the OM-1 is fantastic, far better than my old Canon ever was.

The dust shot was on a tripod as I couldn't both hold my camera properly and sprinkle he flour at the same time.

Week #31 - Food

For such an easy theme, I found myself going in a number of directions.

I started with a couple of closeup/macros:

food - smaller.jpgfood - smaller-2.jpg

But these didn't "do it" for me so I went on a bit of an outing to hunt for more edibles. I took a couple of coffee shop shots:

food-8.jpgfood-3.jpg

And I liked these but they didn't scream FOOD! to me. I think these three were probably the best.

Donuts seen through a display at the New Westminster, Car Free Day festival:

food-9.jpg

My gelato from a place on Robson Street:

food-5.jpg

And the coffee and croissant that I had at my favourite coffee joint, Revolver:

food-2.jpg

croissant fits the theme well Bill. Good bokeh.
I also like the gelato, but the bokeh is better in the croissant image.

Dust.. well captured movement. Nice one.
Food... I love your foodie journey to get the right image. Suits me down to the ground! I rather like the slightly abstract nature of the donuts.

I really like the one you’ve chose Bill. Nice close of of the croissant and background interest too. I like the processing.

The Dust shot isn't my best work but I appreciate the kind words Helen. I did like the donuts through their case but coffee always wins it for me... :D

Thanks Pete, it's a preset that I picked up off of the Adobe creative forums.

Nice one Bill. Can almost smell the coffee and croissants!
Thanks Simon, always love my coffee and snacks...

Week #32 - Internal

An easy theme but I struggled with it. I started with an shot of the internal contents of a glass piggy bank (a bear-shaped glass peanut butter jar). I kind of like how this turned out and I think that I could have worked the image some more to get something better, but I was just too lazy:

internal.jpg

Then there was this shot of the internal setup of an outdoor beer garden at a local festival. I like how the guy in the back managed to frame his face perfectly between the fence links :D
internal-2.jpg

Then I found this internal harddrive and decided to take some closeup shots of parts of it:

internal-4.jpginternal-5.jpg

I liked how they turned out in black and white.

I could go with any of those, but for me the croissant/coffee shot is great, the DOF, composition and the muted tones work really well together.

The 2nd hard drive shot with the DOF falloff going from right to left across the frame really stands out to me.

Nice set of images for the theme. I'm the same with some themes; easy enough but struggling to get a half-decent shot.

Out of the four, I prefer the piggy bank/coins. Interesting angle and square crop work well. Pity the lighting in the lower half is a shade darker.

Good interesting set - they all have merit!

I like the chosen shot best. The "E55" really pops out.

Nice set Bill, like them all but my favourite is the framed face of the man behind the fencing.

Thank you all for the kind words, much appreciated. It's interesting that its pretty much a split between all of the images (except for Dave :) ).

Good set Bill, but my favourite is your chosen one. The sharp focus on the right fading to the left works really nicely, and also works well in mono.

Thanks Simon, I originally photographed it in portrait but thought that it made a more interesting image if I rotated it into a landscape perspective.

Lovely set Bill. I like the one you’ve chosen and the shallow dof and processing work well. I like the man behind the yellow fence too.

Good set Bill.
Yes I agree your chosen one is the best of the bunch.
Meets the challenge well.

Thanks Pete. The man behind the fence was pretty much a coincidence but a happy one for me :D

Week #33 - Square

I got out a couple of times this week. Once in Abbotsford (a city to the east of Vancouver) and once to downtown Vancouver.

From Abbotsford I only got a couple of shots (I didn't have much time). I liked the windows in this old run down house:

Aug 20-22-9.jpg
And in a shop window that had security bars in the shape of squares there was this poster that I thought was interesting with only the top of the man's head and face showing:

Aug 20-22-8.jpg

Today I went downtown and walked around the West End. I started with these folded square tables. I like it in b&w with the young man walking by:

Aug 20-22-7.jpg

Then there was this angled panel of square glass panes that I thought looked good framed with the flowers and foliage:

Aug 20-22-6.jpg

Later on Robson Street I saw this square entryway into a restaurant:

Aug 20-22-3.jpg

And then there was this one of Robson Square:

Aug 20-22-2.jpg

And I ended up at the exit from the Millennium Line Skytrain station where I took a number of shots of the same scene with a 1/3 second exposure and then blended them in Photoshop:

Aug 20-22.jpg

I think that I like this one the best the entryway/exit isn't really square (more rectangular) but there are a number of actual squares throughout the image...so I'm going with it :D

Another good set Bill. My favourite is the one you’ve chosen and I love the processing Which adds a really busy feel to the image.

A good creative set Bill.
Great idea for the one you’ve chosen.
I also like the glass squares, which has square reflections too.

Thanks Pete, I wanted the image to have the sense of people moving within the frame. The man sitting on the ground added some depth to the story.

Thanks Peter, the glass squares cover stairs that are leading down beneath the building. The reflections also caught my eye but didn't really stand out in the bright sunshine. I think that I'll go back to this spot in the fall and see what's what...

Nice set of shots you have captured there, Bill. Like the windows, gate and the train station shots. Did you handheld and use the ICM technique in the last image?
Thanks Stan, the last image consists of 12 separate shots. Five of them at 1/320 sec and seven at 1/3 sec. All of them were handheld. I originally was going to add some ICM but decided not to while I was in the midst of shooting.

Good set of images Bill, but the one you used in the main thread is a cracker of an image and really do like it as it tells a story.
Thanks Dave, this is a bit unusual for me as I have a strong aversion to taking images of homeless people. I made an exception in this case and am still a little uneasy about it.

Internal. As much as a like monochrome I feel drawn to the piggy bank shot.
Square. You certainly have been busy again. Some really goods shot in there. I rather like the shop window... it has a strange sort of menacing quality?

Thanks Helen, the piggy bank warrants a bit more exploration under different light and with different lenses (something to add to my to-do list)
I liked the shop window one as well, for much the same reason, but thought that it was a bit of a cop-out to take a shot of someone else's image...

That's some set Bill.

The poster works best for me. I kinda recognise it but can't quite place him!

Your chosen one is interesting and I like it. Just doesn't fit the theme enough for me.

Thanks Dave, yeah, I agree that the "squareness" of the entryway isn't a little more rectangular than square.

Love the processing of your chosen shot and the face in the window gets a thumbs up from me as well.

Really interesting to see where in live.

Pete

Thanks Pete! Same with me seeing all the shots from your neck of the woods.

Week #34 - Small + technique

Saw this pile of stones in a local park, stacked in the style of a small Inukshuk and lit by dappled light. Not my best image of the bunch but I thought that I'd chose it just to get my technique checkmark :D

Aug 28-22-2.jpg

These were all taken in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I had to go over for work and took some time to capture a few things. The shadows from these small wind chimes hanging beside a food truck at a local market caught my eye:

Aug 28-22-3.jpg

And in the window of a coffee shop this bell was shining in the sun. I like how the streaks in the glass add to the image.

Aug 28-22-4.jpg

The image that I like the most was this one. With the dramatic lines from the shades. It was taken in a local Italian restaurant.

Good set Bill.
That last one is indeed very good - it's a small glass isn't it?
Speaking of Nanaimo, in the 1880's or 90's one of my Dad's uncles (or great uncle?) emigrated with his family and found work in the mines.
I still have a letter he sent his mother one Christmas.
Are the mines still going?
