Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2022

New construction almost finished on a block just down from where I live. I normally try to put more into my ICM images (often with a composite of an ICM and static shot) but was not able to get out to my normal hunting grounds.

Took this on the fly while walking the dogs but I kind of like how it turned out in b&w:

This is what the same building (more of a real world view...):

I really like your chosen image, it's very strong. Personally I think I would have cloned out the power cables top right.

Very good!

Yeah the cable would have gone for me - effective ICM though!

Yeah, I don't disagree Paul, I think that I wasn't invested enough in the image to want to spend the time (desire vs. laziness...laziness won... :D )

Thanks Dave.
And yet, the power cables don't worry me in your ICM shot at all, in fact, they perhaps add to it, being so blurred.
Thanks Tim, I always appreciate a different perspective.
Works well for me as ICM
Thank you Lindsay
Great shot, the mono really gives it some presence!
Thanks Paul, I did process one as a colour image but I thought that the B&W looked a little spookier.
Great ICM and well composed Bill.
Thank you Peter.

Really cool shot. Getting some great ideas for this ICM tech when I pluck up the courage to do it!

I really like this shot. It's amazing what a difference a bit of creativity can make.

Very nice use of icm. Vastly improves the "straight" shot.

It would never have occurred to me to use ICM on a static building but it works really well!

Thanks Simon, no courage needed (I don't shoot film :) ). Failed shots just go in the (digital) trash.

Thank you Helen. The ICM makes it look spooky to me...a little haunted condo down the street from where I live...

Totally agree Brian, I would never have taken the straight shot for it's own sake.
Like the shot as it just looks cool.
Thanks Dave.

For me it's all about strong vertical or horizontal lines. One pans up and the pans across.

I've been playing with sea/riverscapes but haven't had a day to get really good colours yet.

Hopefully I'll get a good image later on this year that I can shoehorn into a theme!

Nice!
I really like how the fade in the sky works when converted to mono, and the way that fade seems to be echoed in the tower.

Much prefer the ICM version and in mono. I'd be tempted to remove the power cables (not read previous comments) but I think on the whole that's a minor issue.

Thanks Nick, an unintended effect of the process :)

Thanks Ian, I was too lazy to remove them. I figured it was "good enough" for a shot caught on the fly.
I very much like how it turned out. The B&W works really well and you can still see what it is.
Thank you Bebop!

I managed to get out three times this week. Here a few that I considered for the challenge:

A great series and I think the ICM composite is terrific. I like the way there's just a hint of background and horizon around the heron on the structure. Of the rest I like the close-up of the nut and bolt. Nice composition and use of DOF.

Chosen shot is right up my alley! Nicely done. I was watching a tutorial last night on how to do these composites as I think they look fantastic when done well, and you have done this one very well.

Yep - nice set and lovely Heron shot :)

Your chosen shot is a cracker. Love the movement with the ICM.
All your other shots are also great, lots of rusty things.

Thanks Shirley, I didn't know that there were any tutorials for this. I've just been floundering on my own trying different things out.
Maybe you can post URL of any of the better ones you've found?

Thanks Pete, in my mind rusty=old :)

Great set for old, but the first is a cracker of a shot.
Thanks Dave, I got lucky. The heron flew down to perch on the pylons just as I was walking up to the scene.

The first shot for Old is impressive. I do have a soft spot for the Chevy though (love cars). And the narrow DOF shot with the bolt and the moss is also a corker.

Strong week.
Thanks Kell.

Thanks Pete.

This is the one I was watching. Unfortunately this one cheats as it adds fake ICM by way of motion blur, but the layer principles are the same if you are using 2 separate shots.

Cool shot, and good choice as it hits the tech too.
I think on balance, I actually prefer #2. It sort of looks like a graveyard built from nuts and bolts.

Thanks Tim, it would have been my choice if the heron hadn't flown into my life.
I think that I've written about the place where I found the bolt before. It's an old decommissioned military base that has been converted into a 40 acre off-leash dog park. The remnants of roads and buildings and sundry other bits and pieces are scattered throughout.

A lot of good images to choose from this week.
ICM is excellent.

No. 2 would have been my choice.
