Darkslinger's 52 Week Challenge - 2021

Interesting set. I suspect that big concrete thing in the chosen shot will look great when it's finished :)

I have an old school pal - Musician/Politician - who lives in Vancouver.

I'm laughing right now, but it's true. This building is probably one of the ugliest in the city but it makes an interesting study in lines, and shadows and shapes. Who's your buddy? I he's a politician I've probably heard of him. This is me trying to make the building look a little softer:

Doors - Any idea what the "No Cat" sign is about? It makes the viewer ask a question, which I think is always a good ting with a photo.
Architecture - Almost Brutalist (but too early).
I think that it's a public lament from someone who desperately wants a cat (I prefer that to the alternative of a demand that you don't bring a cat on the premises...)

You're right Tim, the building is brutal.

They all work well

I do like the one you’ve picked for the main thread, but my choice would have been the third one with the red and yellow.

I especially love the juxtaposition of the grey, rainy day with an ad for a TV show set in HAWAII.

Nice shots but your chosen one has more subtle red elements so I would have gone with that too.

My, that's a lot of red. Top one: good grab. I do like the red building too.
Thanks Martin, got lucky, right time, right place with the red fire hydrant and red sign in the background.

Thanks Kell, I was actually trying to grab a shot of someone walking in front of a red store display when I saw these two. The red and yellow caught my eye and the digital sign changed just before I grabbed the shot.

Nice shots but your chosen one has more subtle red elements so I would have gone with that too.
Thanks Helen!

Great collection of red images. I would have struggled to choose. The red is far more powerful on a rainy day, it really stands out well.
Thanks Bebop, I love going out on rainy days to do street photography. Luckily the Olympus OMD's have great weather sealing!

The irregular twists and turns of these open seedpods grabbed my eye

Oct 27-21 (1 of 1)-5.jpg

I was in downtown New Westminster on a "ghost tour" when I saw the trees along the street with lights in them. I thought that the irregular pattern in the bark lit by the lights and coupled with a slightly irregular camera angle would make for an interesting shot!

Good twisty stuffs :)

Well spotted for both shots and both fit the theme well., The lighting really does bring out the textures in the bark.
Thanks Bebop.
I like your chosen image!
Thanks Paul

Thank you Dave
Both good shots. I think I prefer the tree trunk's bark, but both work well for the theme.
Thanks Simon.
I think the seeds work very well for the theme, well spotted.

Pete
Thank you Pete.

Not my best work but Halloween doesn't really inspire me...

Nov 01-21 (1 of 5).jpg

I'm with you on the "Halloween not inspiring", but but the "red" series is absolutely great and would have worked really well as a collage. An occasion where a series of photos works far better than just a single one. Excellent work.

It works for the theme, and it's nicely composed. Scrolling back, I really like the red brick building shot, the angle looking down the street/alley pulls me in.

Suitably gory. definitely ticks the box, and very creative.

I cannot imagine how you put it together, but it must be a composite?
Thanks Bebop, no I didn't do anything. It was just a decoration on a neighbours lawn and a little Nik Efex magic...

Wierd - and I suppose that means it's bang on theme!
Thanks Paul!

Has a fantastic richness and depth to it.
Thanks Kell,!

Kind words Ian, I appreciate your comments.

Fits the theme nicely, just needed some blood on the axe I think for extra gore! :)
Hard to see in in the way that I processed it, but there is a hand saw leaning on the stump that is covered in "blood".

Thank you Nick.

Ha ha!. Made me chuckle, and the lighting firs the shot perfectly!
Thanks Simon!

Nice 'shrooms. I think No4 fits the theme best.

For me, no 4 fits the theme the best as it is literally underneath something although I think I prefer shot no 2. Your submission for the main thread puts me off a little because of the piece of grass in the foreground is doing a photobomb -- although that might be considered picky.

However, all good, atmospheric pictures of fungi, well done.

I like all your pictures and in think you’ve selected the right one too. I really the DOF too it really highlights the shrooms.

Beautiful soft colours in all the shots. I find the background slightly distracting in #1 - it would be #2 for me.

All great shots, although I think I prefer number 2
Thanks Simon, it was a tossup for me. I kind of liked the background in #1 so that was why I went with it.

You're not wrong Dave, I just liked #1 as an image.

Thanks Martin, as above... :D

All very good hard to pick one really
Thank you Allan!

Beautiful shots. Love them all, but agree that no. 4 is doubly 'underneath'.
Thanks Bebop, I was lucky to spot any of these as they were tiny and blended in with the fallen bamboo leaves.

All are superb shots. Not much else to say.

Pete
Thanks for the kind words Pete!

LOL, it was the background that drew me to #1!

Composite image of a static shot and an ICM shot. Downtown Vancouver, Granville Street.

An obvious composite - but well done :)
