Dark Star's 52 for 2010 - 5/52 Speed :)

:clap: Another great poem from your brother John! Fits the image perfectly and is amusing, but a little sad at the same time.

I'm not a lover of garden gnomes as ornaments, but in the context of this week's shot he's a cute little guy.
The contrast of the bright colours against the snow works well, but I'd kind of like to see him more prominent in the frame. Maybe on the bottom third instead of the top, with the snow reaching out behind him.
Having said that, the fact that he is a little bit distant works well with the poem - makes him feel a bit more abandoned and forgotten.
 
Like the poem, odd bright patch on the snow middle front but excellent to get a shadow so soft it's not there!

I would like to see the gnome just a bit lower in the frame, though - it is a bit too near the top for my taste. It's a bit difficult for me to judge, though, as it is too tall for my monitor and I can't see it all at once.
 
I have been waiting for this poem & shot.
I am not disappointed either. The two sit together very well.:thumbs:

week 1: nice shot, love the glow around the ball, that the shallow dof gives it
week 2:great poem, works very well for the photo
 
I never thought I'd say this, but I think that shot really needs a border. :rules: That poor gnome is looking out onto all that white bleakness with no end in sight. Bob confirms that in his poem! :D

Bob, as always, has come up trumps, and somehow he's made me feel guilty for suggesting (many years ago) that we throw away an inherited gnome we found in our garden. Needless to say he's still around somewhere in the undergrowth. :lol:

Oh yes, the photo - different, John, and I do like it, but I would like to be more at eye level with the gnome, rather than looking up to him.

btw - where's the Robin? :shrug: :lol:

Love curved, cracking photo! Not much else to say really.

Very nice poetry shot and a good poem to accompany it too. You got the perfect balance of snow detail and gnome detail :thumbs: I have to agree in that he's a tad high in the photo for me, but tis only a minor niggle :)

Hi John, Loved the ball excellent shot good colour and DOF. When I first looked at the gnome shot I thought crop straight away then read the poem and immediatley changed my mind the space and solitude compliments the words created by your brother.

Thanks for your kind comments :) The Robin, Jean, was Bob's poetic licence :)

The angle of shot was very much determined by the length of our garden - a lower, more eye level shot would have introduced some unwanted background to deal with and I wanted that sense of sad isolation and distance thats why I had him set back :)

Certainly is! It's quite bright for me, and I think I'd like more contrast. Looks like a desktop pattern... one of those where you lose your icons. :)

Really like your 'chopped' shot - I love the pastel colours of the bark and the overal pattern created by the pile of wood.

This weeks shot reminds me of one of those jigsaws that you can never complete because its to hard lol

Your week 3's a good picture and I can almost smell the sap, but I can't help feeling that it needs a bit more punch, too.
Will a tad more saturation and contrast overcook it?

I do like your shot, it's got a lot of texture going on out of the two I think I prefer the colours in the first one just seems a bit more natural.

very nice! really interesting texture, but a calming uniformity at the same time (does that make sense?)

I've tried similar shots - but your piles are much bigger than mine! :D

got to agree, I can smell wood and sap and moss and all things out doorsy, and thats the sort of thing a good image should do. ;)

Now that's a fantastic image, so much to look at without getting distracted, I'd hang that on my wall.
 
Great 'chopped' shot John, personally I prefer the added pop of the 2nd version, some lovely texture through the pic and your editing has just given it that wee oomph that picks it up.

I love the logs - great colours and patterns! :clap::clap::clap: Though I prefer the first version myself.

I thought of doing something similar but no woodpiles anywhere near me...
 
Oomphy version gets my vote too John. Lots of interesting shapes and textures to lose your thoughts staring at. Definitely make a good jigsaw for those relatives you're not that keen on :)
