Thanks everyone for the comments. I am trying to get to you all but have been busy the past couple of weeks.

I will definitely try to the bike theme going although a couple of weeks in march might be tricky when I go to Arizona with work. I'll see what I can do.

I did think when I took the last shot for sweet that I could have used it for both themes as it was a late submission for sigh But then thought that's a cop out so shot the other one as well.

Oh and the cake was lovely. Jut what I needed to replace all those lost calories.

I think a few of us are looking at hiring bikes whilst we are away Dan if you fancy it?

Love the DOF on the sweet shot.
 
So this week I wanted to continue on with my mountain bike theme, it was quite obvious which way to take but I wanted to add a slant to it and also try a new technique.

There are two versions as I couldn't decide which one is best. The first with just light trails, the second I painted the bike with a LED torch giving the blue frame more of a blue highlight.

I often see bikes which are locked up only to see the wheels and seat stolen thanks to quick release, hence the position of the bike and its sorry situation. This shot is staged as its my own bike and I wouldn't be daft enough to leave it there.

Just as I was setting this shot up a police car was driving round very slowly obviously curious as to my intentions, then after a minute or so it sped off with tones and lights blazing, shame I missed it as it would have made a perfect shot.

Think no 2 for me as it shows the lock but it’s a bit bright

great idea for Secure....shouldn't have done but I did chuckle when I saw the wheels n seat missing :nuts:

Think #2 just edges it for having more of the bike/lock clearly visible...spot on for the theme & the light trails add a little something to it ...nice :clap:

#1....WB seems a little orangy ?...difficult I know with street lighting

Sweet =-to my eyes utterly compelling - great take on the theme and the cafe stop within a ride will ring bells with bikers. Lovely composition

Secure - does not hit mark for me as the bike is obviously not secure and the colours don't really add anything for me. Sorry. :) Just does not reflect the quality of your other shots.

I had a quick auto WB in LR and found it much improved.

Sweet has just talked me into an early lunch :)

Secure - Now that one strikes home as I have been on the rough end of some light fingered scrote. I won't even leave my new Rockhopper outside in fear of it's parts being liberated.

Good luck trying to do the 52 all mountain bike related, I will no doubt have a few myself as the weeks tick by.

Sweet - Well thought out and I like your use of DoF

Secure - I prefer #1 out of these two which the less harsh colour.
 
Mountain bikes as part of your 52 that really is a challenge! :thumbs:

It's really good that you've pushed yourself and I like the result. Your explanation was good as without It it looks like an epic fail - someone away on their toes with the seat, wheels etc !

#2 just pips it for me.:clap:
 
Hiya Dan, can't believe I've not been here before, but I'm liking all of what you've done so far. I really like your fear shot, and your 2nd secure. There's something just wrong with a bike with its handlebars turned backwards, but the blue painting really sets it off. Very nice.

Thanks, I was struggling with the white balance under this orange lights and it was a really quick LR edit so I could improve it from this. Next time ill make sure I get it better before posting

Thanks for your comments, the challenge of trying to do them all around my bike is proving difficult and this week was no exception. The idea was there but it was maybe a bit rushed.

I appreciate your comments and it was a weaker shot but again the idea was there just failed a little in the execution.

I was really struggling for a shot this week, I have been on a course all week and unable to get out with my camera.

Until today that is, and half way round my ride I found this rather nice looking industrial watermill. research show that it dates back to pre 1780 and although the wheel is long gone it stands well by the weir.

Not the most obvious of industrial shots but I love the history behind these kind of places so to me this is a lovely example of bygone industry.

Hi Dan, I like the mill, and it does work very well with Industry, but I think the bike is a mistake; it doesn't fit with the theme, and is very distracting. Unless you've got shots without it, I'd be tempted to crop it right off. You'll lose the nice curve of the fence, but I think that's better than leaving it there.
 
Thanks for your thoughts Mark, I have some shots without the bike but being part of my 52 and the rules I have imposed onto myself I felt that I had to include it.
The shots I wanted for this week just didn't materialise so I chose this.

Sweet too, cake, you can't go wrong. It's also lovely and sharp.

Industry, mmm? Without your explanation it wouldn't say industry to me! But it's a lovely shot.

I find your bike a little too colourful in it and a little distracting, maybe a B&W conversion would sort that out?

I'll be following along the rest of your 52 with I interest:thumbs:
 
Secure, I prefer the first one personally without the light painting, looks properly urban.

I also love the take on it, made me snigger :thumbs:

Industry, I like it. Granted the water wheels missing but it's fairly obvious it's an old industrial building of days gone by. Like the bike in there too, the colours somehow stand out as well as the lane to the right seems to lead me into the picture nicely.

By the way, you've done a great job repairing the bike since the secure shot :clap::naughty::naughty:
 
So the bike is creating some differing opinions.
I knew it was going to be a challenge when I said it, and trying to incorporate it without just plonking it in the frame is hard. So from this week on I'll try and shoot two shots, one of the bike and one without the bike but in a different location or subject but still on theme.

Here goes.

Nice pic, got to agree with ditching the bike though. (or paint it white :) )

thats a lovely old building & the shot is right on theme .....the bike is killing me though....stay , go , stay , go :shrug: B&W would work well I think....you could really set it off if you had an older bike...more period if that makes sense ?

Having said that...a 52 is a challenge...to include a bike in each shot is plain :cuckoo:....:lol:
 
Hi dan, trying to get round some of the threads I haven't commented on before. I take it you like bikes lol. Looks like you've had a good start to the challenge. I especially like your fear shot. You really managed to convey speed in that image.

As for industry I agree with the previous comment on leaving the bike out of the shot. The colours are too distracting IMO. Good image though and a different take on industry. :thumbs:
 
Following up from the comments about my industry shot I have edited the shot to give a more antique feel, I have desaturated the image and applied a white vignette. I like the bike in the image as it tell my story. I will return to this location with better light to get the mill in all its glory.

Now for week 7, I cant believe we are here already, I have doubted myself a couple of times as I think I underestimated the challenge.
This week I had a good shot in mind and it has turned out pretty much as I had hoped.

Roots to me can be great or can be a nightmare, this one looked great from the start and soon turned into the latter.

I had set the camera up and using my remote shutter running lock I left it shooting while I rode past the camera. I wanted to get slightly airborne over the root which I did but then when I landed it all went wrong and over the handle bar I went. Luckily I wasn't going too quick and it only knocked the wind out of me, nothing more than a few bruises and a dented pride.

Looking back though the shots I found that I had a good enough shot and feeling sore after the first 'off' I didn't fancy it again. I can also see why I was doomed to fail as I am looking down at the ground and not at my projected landing point. oops:thumbsdown:

I do like riding my bike but I had made the decision a couple of week ago that I would theme all my shots around it, Don't know why really, but It is getting me out on my bike more often which cant be a bad thing.
 
I like the white vignette on your edited industry, it certainly ages it but the modern bike looks out of place now! Or does it:shrug:

I'm sorry but I had a giggle at your 'off'! It must be the military mean streak in me but I'd like to see a picture of the carnage:lol:
With that said, you did well to get a shot of yourself in action and the roots are nice and sharp, well done:clap:

Thanks, I was much the same after I recovered. If I had left the camera where I originally set up then you would have seen the start of the off but I thought this angle made a better shot. Oh well.

Good old military first aid, point and laugh then see if they need help. I'm the same.
 
I like your industry edit Dan, the subdued colours really work. A bit of flash would have helped your root shot to catch the moment with a faster shutter, glad your tumble wasn't too bad and you survived. ;)
