dan_yorkshire's 52 2010 (Week 26 - Beginnings (Pg 15)

Lovely take on the theme. really good DOF but I think I would have prefered it if you was slightly higher up

Well thought out. Shame the flames are not all pointing the same way. ;) :)

I like this a lot. It's definitely up there with my favourites from this week.
Very creative idea, great DoF and the reflections set it off perfectly.

But what is going on with the multidirectional flames?
It actually really works having them all pointing into the centre, but it's a strange effect.

And you just popped in there with peace on me! Really clever shot, liking that lots! The lighting and DOF are perfect yet again. Nicely done!

Cheers, glad you like it.

very good use of dof and right on theme

Great idea but how did you manage to get all the flames angled inwards?

Absolutely no idea how the candles have ended up this way, maybe something to do with the rising heat...

Did consider posting one of the higher shots I took but just thought this was a little more artistic and less ovbious :)

Well thought out. Shame the flames are not all pointing the same way. :)

I actually quite like the candles pointing into the centre, as I mentioned before I've no idea how they've come to behave like that

Thanks Sarah, the relections are just on black card, was going to use something a little more reflective but thought this was quite subtle and worked well.

Very clever and works really well.

Thankyou

Hi Dan, 17 weeks into this 52 and I'm STILL trying to catch up with everybody - so my apologies for not stopping off sooner, it's nothing personal, just pressure of time. :)

Anyway, it's a nice quiet evening, and having a good browse through your thread was lovely. Just picking out a few favourites:

Revenge of the Carrot, post #55, made me laugh out loud - really funny.

Present #115 also made me laugh out loud - after I'd shouted 'look out!'

Chemistry # 189: A very clever idea - RGB illustrated beautifully. Can't fault it in any way - excellent shot, Dan.

Quad #243: Also very clever and beautifully executed. The colours all work well and I agree is has a look of a Reception Class poster. The border and immaculate presentation add to the top quality too. :)

Single #287: I love the feeling of high speed motion in this shot - it looks fantastic fun. :D

Stare #303: Wow, this is a very powerful image. The fact that you've hidden your wife's eyes in shadow allows the viewer to interpret her expression in whatever way they want - very clever. The cross processing adds to the drama - I love it.

Peace - ahhh - caught up at last! ;) There are so many elements to like in this - the lighting, the subtle reflections, the pov, the dof, the clever thing with the flames and the interpretation of the theme. Brilliant.:clap::clap:

I'll try and keep up from now on. :)

Jean

Peace, I really like that, subtle, gentle... really good... how did you get those flames all moving to the middle, it works superbly.

I really like this, and the f1.8 has worked very well. For me, the best thing about it is the way the flames all point towards the middle. it was the first thing I noticed, and definitely makes the shot stand out IMO.

Very very good effort!

Ian.

Shoot....:clap::clap: and bloody scarey at the same time.

Single.....after 2 seconds of looking at that I need to go and lie down in a dark room

Stare....good idea with trying to get the wire to disect the face, the processing also works very well to create a very serious stare.

Peace...Another great idea with the candles and the low angle to create a superb shot.

I really like this one. The angles of the flames are very strange but actually makes the shot more interesting. The DOF is excellent and the reflections are just right - not overpowering. Great take on the theme.

Jenny

Thanks Jenny, glad you like it.

Cheers for your catchup Jean, the flames weren't deliberate but pleased they've added to the image.

Once again, no idea how the flames did that, maybe just naturally with the rising heat??

Thanks

Tough week.

Found it difficult to take a shot other than a still life macro type shot of food etc

My indulgence this weekend has been the beer, my team Leeds finally had some success so I enjoyed a few in celebration last night.... maybe a few too many.

Had planned this shot earlier in the week but left it until thismorning when I had a hangover and didnt really want an open bottle of beer too close

Shot taken using the natural light of the window and tweaked with levels in PS to get an amount of darkness into the shot I was happy with.

I know selective colour isnt to everyones taste but in this case I felt the shot needed it to give it a bit of punch.

Black border added to definethe edges of the shot more.

I too think the selective colouring works here Dan. I like the lighting and processing on your image and certainly says indulgence to me. You are a martyr to the 52 cause by necking that beer with a hangover. Cheers  Iain

I don't like selective colour but think it works here. Doesn't look like you are drinking though!

This works really well Dan.
The lighting is spot on and I love the way that you're semi-silhouetted against that white background.

I've seen a few selective colouring shots where I've had to grudgingly admit that I liked them . . . but this one works absolutely brilliantly
It feels like it should be some sort of advert.

A very, very minor niggle for me is the crop on the bottom. (and I do mean very minor)
It just looks a bit awkward where it's cutting right along the horizontal line of your upper right arm. I think I'd prefer just a little more in frame.

Definitely up there with my favourites from your thread though and full marks for doing this with a hangover.

Now that's dedication to the 52 - taking a self portrait and drinking beer with a hangover!

The really appeals to me. I like the almost-sillouette effect, and the selective colouring makes the shot (wow - I can't believe I've just admired selective colouring! ;) ) Seriously the whole thing works brilliantly - lighting, composition, selective colouring, the lot.:clap::clap:

Jean

That's a nice shot Dan and the selective colour definitely improves it in this case. top marks for dedication to the shot with a hangover. I'm not sure i would have managed it.

Cheers Chris, glad I'm getting the  for selective colour treatment.

Thanks Iain, I was hardly necking the beer but it still took some effort

You know what they say, hair of the dog...

I really like this. The selective colouring really makes the shot and I think you have the lighting spot on.

Jenny

Much appretiated Jenny, natural lighting is always nice however it was a touch bright so darkened it slightly in PP.

I don't like selective colour but think it works here. Doesn't look like you are drinking though!

That would be because I'm not.... 10am with a hangover, I wasn't that thirsty

I'm glad you mentioned it looks like an advert Sarah, during the PP I decided that was the look I was after and glad its been picked up on.

See what you mean about the crop, was just wary of a too steep an angle on my arm looking too false.

Glad you like it.

Really good shot. Exposure is on the button and has as been said the selective color is spot on. My little niggle is.. I think the highlight over the eye is too bright and could be toned down slightly, my eye keeps going to it.

Allan

Cheers for your feedback Allan, agree with the highlight on my eye. I'd actually picked up on it before I posted it and darkened it.... obviously not enough.

Such a great idea and you've really pulled it off  Well done Leeds!

Many thanks Jean, the first self portrait I have done so I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not a lover of selective colour myself however sometimes an image benefits from it and it seems this is one of them.

Dan

+1 on the selective colouring working. A nice touch.

Also agree with Sarah about the arm. It's a small niggle for me, but I did notice it before reading Sarah's comments so thought I'd chime in when I probably wouldn't have said anything.

Ian.

Please in the future, dont worry about commenting on a shot, if I take something from feedback then all the better

Dan

Great idea and well executed, the selective colouring works well with just enough detail in yourself.

 sorry I'm way behind this week on commenting... and shooting for that matter ;)...

I think that works really well Dan, the lighting is excellent, and the selective colouring is spot on, and it fits the theme so well, so a big  from me.

Nice composition- just the right amount of space around the subject and the selective colour works well.

Thanks Sue, glad you like

Better late than never...

Was away for a long weekend and never got the time to do an 'Ingredients' shoot beforehand.

Thought it was a pretty poor theme and I'm sure most like me will have struggled to come up with a unique take on it.

I'm still to look at anyones entries so there will be a chance many have the same shot idea as me.

I love making curries from scratch and these are just some of the many, many ingredients I have in the kitchen.

Not 100% happy with this, would have preffered to be more creative with it but just glad to get it in and get thinking on my 'Stop' shot.

Really really like your 'indulgence' shot. Would have expected to see that kind of shot in a beer ad and the slective colouring works perfectly.
Your ingredients shot isn't doing too much for me I'm afraid. It's vry well lit and the black background definitely helps bring out the colours of the various ingredients, but I find the pestle and mortar an unnecessary addition to the shot (and my eyes keep drawing to it) and would have preferred to see the ingredients closer and from a lower angle.

Nice image with lots of ingredients, would be nice to have got alittle closed to show more detail of the ingredients but i still like it

Cheers

Glad you like the indulgence shot, was going for an advert effect so pleased you've picked up on that.

Totally agree with the ingredients remarks, wanted to get a shot to work from lower and closer but wasnt happy with those I took at a lower angle.... didnt have my creative head on!!

Indulgence works very well, with its clean and simple composition, and the selective colouring is inspired.

Ingredients is well lit and the colours stand out well, but needs a more interesting arrangement, though I don't know what to suggest - this theme didn't grab me at all.

Good chose making ingredients low-key, Dan. I wish I'd done this with mine too now. Gives it more impact.

Ingredients - like the way the ingredients stand out with the blackbackground but find the pestle and morter a little lost with the black backgound !

Cheers, agree with those comments.

Lets hope we start getting some better themes.

Thanks for that, had toyed with the idea of using hight key but as you stated, the ingredients didnt stand out as much.

Yep, see where you are saying. This it was the first week I entered a shot that I wasnt happy with. Maybe I should have tried something different until I was happy but time wasnt on my side.

Another cr4p theme, they seem to be getting worse every week!!

Hopefully have a better one this week that inspires me to pick up the camera more than recent themes.

Initially wanted to shoot a cigerette being stubbed out but as I dont smoke I didnt know how best to do it :bonk:

Shot my bike brakes so think it fits the stop theme pretty well.

Played with numerous apertures and compositions but this came out best, as an image I think it would have been stronger from showing more of the bike (taken further round the bike) but as I wanted to concentrate on the brake pad it wasnt as fitting.

Fingers crossed for a good theme this week......

Dan

understand what you mean about showing more of the bike but this image does fit the theme very nicely.

point of focus is just right.

black and white works well.

bang on theme. Well done

I don't think anybody has liked this weeks theme :shake:
