dan_yorkshire's 52 2010 (Week 26 - Beginnings (Pg 15)

Spot on - well the execution and composition is ;)

As other have said perhaps test tubes or beakers may have been a little more 'on theme' but none the less is a great photograph and much nearer the mark than mine ;)

I like it Dan... The execution is good, and the details and swirls are spot on. I think something other than wine glasses and more chemical related would have been more on theme though.

Just a leeeetle cheat, mate, but a good enough shot that it doesn't matter. :)

:agree: More chemically jars would have fitted the theme better, but this works well just as it is.

Clear glasses against a white background aren't easy. I tried it last year (with limited success!), so I think you've done really well to keep the definition there. I love the coloured swirls too. Your patience really paid off with that.

Thanks, should maybe have ventured out and tried some different glasses, just feel I wouldnt have got the same effect.

Thanks Sarah, as you said it isnt easy photographing glass with a white background, had I had two flashes I would have got the effect I was after. I soon realised I was going to have to be a bit more creative with the light and settled on my final shot.

Good take on this Dan. Agree with the above - test tubes or beakers would have been better.

Was hoping to get out today with the camera but shocking weather has put a stop to that.

A short while ago when I got my 35mm 1.8 I went to the night market to take candid shots and these are a couple from that visit.

Really struggle to master the focusing in low light with such shallow DoF but when you get it nailed on it gives really pleasing results,

Cheers for looking,

Dan

Definitely prefer your 1st shot for candid, but as you have already pointed out, the image could have been more sharper - would have liked to have seen the guy inside the stall in focus. Still candid though.

By the way, what the hell is the guy doing with the wooden duck in his mouth??!

Cheers, personally like the second more myself but will be interesting too see what the general consensus is.

You're not wrong, I mentioned I had planned to take the camera out yesterday but the weather put a stop to that so dug out a couple I knew fit the theme.

Cheers

New shots or not that market looks really interesting.
I'm a bit disturbed by the guy blowing the duck's bum (:naughty: ) but I really want one of those rock / quartz lamps.

Both are good shots, but I really do love the second.
The way that the guy seems to be looming out of the darkness suits it perfectly and those glowing rocks really are gorgeous.
The crystals and nicknacks in the background set it off nicely too.

I'm not sure that I've expressed it particularly well, but there really is something special about that second shot.

A great pair of candid shots Dan... I think I prefer the second one. I like the effect of the lighting more.

Many thanks Sarah, the second is my fav too for the same reasons you mentioned, the first one I am fairly happy with but just feel it's a bit busy.

1st shot is terrific, wonderful colours 10/10 :D

Cheers Rob

Thanks, pleased I managed to spot the composition for the shot that allowed for the lighting on the mans face.

Second for me Dan - the guys face is a little soft but I really like the colour and glow of the lamps.

Really like the Chemistry shot. Beautifully lit and excellent composition. A pleasing image too. Very nice.

#1 is the Candid shot for me, although I agree about the sharpness.

Ian.

Cheers, maybe the use of a too shallow DoF to focus on the lamps has sacrificed the sharpness elsehwere.

Struggled a bit coming up with an idea for this week.

Last night I had a lightbulb above the head moment and went out with the camera thismorning.

My veg plot potatoes didnt last very long in the harsh winter so I took shop bought spuds out to the garden and got them, and my hands nice and dirty/grubby for the shot.

Took the shot in my dark garage with the SB600 in the hotshoe and lit it with i-TTL. My initial idea was to HDR it but decided it looked better processing it through PS.

Nice one Dan...I really like that! But then again, as an Irishman I am a little partial to a handful of spuds.

Although not sure what your neighbours must have thought when they saw you taking nice clean spuds out to the garden to rub some dirt into them.

Nice set up, love the idea! Could do with a touch of burn to brighten up the hands and spuds but a really clever shot, well done

Actually, I take that back, I've just been looking at the image again and the darkness really brings out the gritty nature of the shot...

I am not a lover of black and white photos - BUT I do love this shot, it simply says "chips" to me, love the lighting and just plain and simple.

Great.

haha luckily my garden is out of view so I escaped that.

Thanks, really glad you changed your mind on the pic, it was a gritty/dirty look I was after. I just hope everyone has nice bright monitors to do the shot justice.

Cheers for your nice comments, wonder if the local chipshop would like it on their wall... haha!!

OOO those arms are not attached! lol
I like it. Its simple and effective! What did the colour version look like?

Glad you like it pete, I was wearing a black jumper rolled to the elbows, was going to crop it closer but actually like the effect.

The colour one wasn't bad at all but as I wanted a gritty picture it was B&W all the way and bumping up the contrast.

Well thought out and executed, the processing is spot on for the subject and the image is 100% on theme.

Nice one - your low-key B/W treatment really fits the subject.

Cheers for your comments, glad you approve of the low key treatment

Ok, how can a shot of some hands holding grubby spuds have impact !?

Really like this, nice contrast, excellent ligting and spot on theme-wise. Oh and B&W was an excellent choice :D

I'm assumng that statement means it does have impact??

Cheers Rob  I'm pleased with the lighting and processing, its nice when an image in your head actually looks like the finished article

very nice shot, suits well in b & w also.

Thanks David, happy everyone so far is pro B&W.

Dan

Great shot. Like the B&W - very gritty!.

I like this a lot Dan.

I'm glad that you didn't HDR it, because the B&W treatment works brilliantly.
I also love the angle / sense of perspective in it. I would never have thought that a handful of spuds could actually look dramatic

The arms are not quite working for me though. I'm just not sure about the way they seem to be "cut off" just below the elbow.
In fact I think you could afford to lose the arms completely and just have the hands and potatoes in the shot.

Great shot  - the black and white works really well- gives the shot real impact.

Sorry, yes it does have impact.

I've yet to look at something I've taken and think "that's just how it looked/I wanted it to look" :shake:

Thanks Sarah, quite surprised how dramatic I've got it looking myself.

Tried removing the arms and felt the hand looked slightly more alien than the arms do so left it, probs just my opinion though, might put it on later.

Thankyou Liz, appreciated.

Cheers all

Dan, the feel for this is just superb... spot on and on theme.. love it.

what a great powerful image, nice tone and great idea.

Its like a farm workers offering to the gods!

perhaps consider having elbows in or darker edges to them as it seems to cut the image in half ;)
