dan_yorkshire's 52 2010 (Week 26 - Beginnings (Pg 15)

Nice image, it's simple and yet the cogs give it lots of interest. I like the processing too. Well executed, on theme, good job.

I like that, a simple idea really well done :)

Very good Dan, on theme, well shot and PP'ed

Very nice mechanical shot :)

People: nice shot and good crop and subject matter
Mechanical: Like it, simple, balanced and effective ;)

Cheers for your feedback everyone, I got the PP just as I wanted it and am pleased you all aprove with the final image.

Dan

Nice, simple, well composed, well thought out, well lit image.

Another suspiciously clean bike though :)

Ian.

Nicely done, suits the mono treatment and well processed.

Looks good... I too didn't notice it was a copy when I first looked either.

Simple shot. BUT, loads to look at (if your me and rather than read you spend ages staring at it trying to work out if it's two different cog sets or not). Congrats, you held my attention for at least 5 minutes !!

Cheers Ian, I do ride the bike... honest  just had to shine it up for the camera

Thankyou for your comments

Thanks Rob, typical man.... its like putting an ikea wardrobe up, look at the pictures before reading the text

Nice shot for Mechanical Dan - works well in B&W. Wouldn't have guessed it was copied

Hi Dan.

As an image, if I'm completely honest, a picture of 2 cogs isn't really exciting me that much ;)
Technically it's worked really well though. I wouldn't have noticed the PP unless you'd mentioned it and there's some very nice detail in the cogs. The B&W conversion is perfect for it too.

What really strikes me is how flower-like those cogs look - there's almost a petal effect to the teeth.
If you could have found a metal spoke or something to use as a stem and maybe used some nuts to create a couple of bees, I think you could have come up with a really quirky mechanical flower composition that could have worked well.

(On the other hand I'm on my second glass of wine tonight, so I may just be going a bit :cuckoo:)

Cheers for your feedback Sarah, guess it's a bit of a marmite pic really with it being so minimilistic.

I didn't like the image with just one set of cogs but thought it became balanced and quite arty with two so went for it.

The flower is a clever idea, your create enough as it is without drinking wine, it's bringing out even more creativity.... me and beer work the other way... Haha :gag:

Dan

I really like your sprockets - would make a good pc wallpaper, perhaps.

Cheers, I've actually already set it as my desktop!!

But I always set my weekly pic as my background, gives me more chance to find strengths and weakness in them over the coming week before being replaced.

Had a busy week but managed to get my idea shot in fading light early yesterday evening.

Had a play with DoF and decided to shoot wide open at 1.8 and focus on only the ball, had the D90 on my gorillapod as low to the ground as I could and shot three scenes.

Took me a few attempts on burst to get the tee falling from a height, think I could have done with it a touch higher up and looking more like it was spinning through the air but you get the jist.

Taking the clubs to play the Belfry tomorrow and Monday so will report back in and comment on others on Tue, as well as seeing the week 10 theme.

Cheers

Dan

That works really well as a triptych. The tee works where it is although a little higher may have worked better :) Nice idea, well executed

superb take on the theme, certainly one of my faves from this weeks theme
they do however need a teeny weeny bit of aligning
Have a good day at the Belfry - its just down the road from me, looks a cracking course

A great idea and well executed Dan. The third one may have worked better with the tee slightly higher but it's clear what's going on anyway.

Nice one Dan, the triptich has worked great for these three shots

Nice tryptich that tells a story. Works well.

Cheers, was gonna maybe reshoot the tee shot but gonna use my time thinking of an idea for 'chemistry'

Thanks for your kind words, might re-align them in pp if I get chance soon, good spot.

Just back from the Belfry, every bit as good as you would imagine

I like that .. fits the theme very well indeed.

The works really well:clap:

Cheers

Little bit annoyed I didnt get a shot with the tee higher, wonder if I can move it higher in photoshop and get away with it, might give it a try

This is great. Nice compostion, idea and colouring.

Really nice composition and execution.

Excellent Dan - works well

Thanks everyone

Ian.

Strangley enough I'd not heard of the term 'triptych' until I got these remarks, many thanks for your feedback, glad you like.

Dan

I think this is my favourite image from your 52 so far Dan (and one of my favourite shots for play)

I love the use of a triptych to tell a story, and you've definitely done that here.
All 3 are lovely, crisp and well-composed.

OK, I agree with you that the tee spinning through the air and perfectly positioned on the top third for image 3 would have been fantastic . . . but that also sounds pretty damn impossible to me

I think it works very well as it is - you've pulled it off brilliantly

Cheers for your kind words Sarah, pleased you like it.

Was thinking of having another go at the spinning tee but don't think I'll get time.... the more these themes go on, the more critical I seem to get with myself.

Dan

Hi Dan, just playing catchup on some threads and realised ive not commented on yours. Some great shots so far. I particularly like your speed shot and mechanical shot. Chopped made me chuckle out loud, great interpretation and revenge for the carrot. This weeks offering is well presented, a great tryptych simple and effective. was it a good drive?

Cheated a little bit this week, it doesnt shout out 'Chemistry' but does show chemicals/chemical reaction and was the idea that popped into my head as soon as the theme was announced and I really wanted to try it.

Luckilly that shop had exactly the three colours I wanted..... Red, Green and Blue or maybe more familiar when shown as RGB... the three colours behind vision, and ultimately what our DSLR cameras sensors record.

Took me absolutely ages with each colour trying to get the effect I wanted, when reasonably happy I then added them together in PS.

Had a bit of trouble with condensation on the glass because of cold water being used, and took a fair bit of tinkering with my SB600 flash to get the right amount of light without glare, went for 1/16 on the LHS of the glass. Camera on tripod at the front, AV mode f5.6

C&C as always,

Dan

as you say it doesn't really scream chemistry, i think if you'd done the same thing with test tubes you'd have nailed it
either way it's still a good photo and a good concept

Cheers Karl

Thought about more narrow glasses/test tubes but doubt I would have got the same effect with the swirling colour.

Just a leeeetle cheat, mate, but a good enough shot that it doesn't matter. :)

:agree:

An interesting idea. It has got me thinking about the loads of oil paints I have upstairs- maybe I can try to get some photos from them. And as there are two substances mixed I think it fits the chemistry theme.Well done

Definitely a chemical suspension and the effect you've got is a good one. Lighting isn't bad, but how would it have worked bounced off the back wall to help whiten the background?

Cheers for your feedback Darren,

The lighting affect is actually deliberate but I see where your coming from. I tried that at the start and because of the glasses picking up reflections etc the finished shot looked like the glass had been cut and paste onto a white bg and looked a tad false.

Should have used a lamp or another flash (which I don't have.....yet! :))
