I've been a total clutz. I noticed a couple of weekends ago black blobs on my pictures. As it had been snowing, I thought it was due to water on my lens.

Anyhow took some pictures this weekend and alas same marks, so hunting down on the internet came to the conclusion it was dust on the sensor. (all very new to me). I have been careful when changing my lenses etc and my Nikon D60 having a cleaning system too. Anyway yesterday popped to Jessops and purchased a Rocket Blower and some pen thing with a brush on the end. Big mistake. Now have a scratch on the sensor.

Fortunately my contents insurance has covered the damage and they are issuing a cheque as we speak but……..

Obviously my skill at cleaning the sensor is awful and am never going to attempt it again. My only issue is obviously being a DSLR I like to change lenses.

What tips are there to prevent dust getting onto the sensor in the first instance?

Also I have an excess to pay and want to recoop the costs involved. What sort of money is my D60 under a year old worth? Pristeen apart from the sensor!
Thank you
Lee

I'd doubt a D60 unable to take clear pictures is worth anything tbh.

Tips for lens changing.

1. Do it as quickly as possible
2. Always power the camera down first
3. Try to keep the open bit of the camera facing down
4. Check the back of the lens before you fit it

Are you sure it is scratched? They are reasonably sturdy. Could it be a bristle from the brush?

Nah defo scratched, got my LED pen in there and you can see it very clear.

Thank you for the tips. Out of those I don't think I always turned my camera off :)

I have done exactly the same thing on my Pentax (see mark right hand side by tree) it only shows up at about f16 and is really annoying.
I caught it with a rocket blower and It's def a scratch, I have tried a wet clean which didn't help at all.
I am currently waiting to see how much repair will be, I don't want to claim on my insurance until I know how much.

I have been told that there is a plastic cover on the sensor and that maybe is all that needs replacing.

You are correct, there is a cover over the actual sensor, so if anything gets damaged it will be that. The bad news is that changing it involves stripping the camera right down and on most of the new entry-level dslrs the repair costs would outweigh the replacement costs.
