Hi all

The other half came home today to tell me a car passing in the opposite direction struck the drivers side mirror :( she was not best pleased!

Glass shattered and body coloured cover gone! The electric positioning still aok and the main part looks aok and sound.

So thinking now to keep repairs lowest possible cost is to source the glass one cover for diy replacement but pay a spray shop to paint the cover.

Therefore looking for source of parts and ideally a schematic to show the blown up assembly

The car is 54 plate Toyota corolla.

Any pointers very welcome :)

TIA for any feedback.

For the cost of getting the cover sprayed, you could probably pick up a whole mirror in a breakers. Buy a rattle can and spray it yourself. new mirror lens can be bought, I'd imagine like Ford unit's they will just clip onto the mechanics inside the housing.

I'd try a few phone calls to local scrap yards to see if they have one in - you'd have the full unit then, just in case you need anything else - but yu could just use what bits you needed.

You might even get lucky with the same colour clip on rear section :)

Try Ebay you can offer pick up mirrors and covers for a decent price.

I did find wing mirror man but no separate covers for our model. Will have to get some figures from dealer and non dealer places as well paint shop quote for spraying to match as appropriate.....mmm has the glass listed for approx half cost of complete unit ~ will come down to the numbers and options?

Good idea re breakers.....as I would only buy from that source "as seen" I called the two nearest ones and both told me that make, model, year are not coming in as quote "people are holding on to them......." Also clearly very very few by way of accident write offs!

Hmm! EBay.... same as above re breakers, would only buy if seen and the example linked to is manual not electric as mentioned ;)

So will explore all avenues that can to see the lowest cost options :)

You're quite right to be circumspect. About three weeks ago I damaged my neighbour's Mini's wing mirror. I ordered one from eBay without realising that sometime between '05 and 2011, the mount changed as well as a few more subtle cosmetic changes to the finish etc.

I'll now have to re-sell the 'wrong part' and try to track down the correct one without it costing a fortune!

In the meantime, the 'Gorilla Tape' is doing a great job.

you need to know exactly what you are ordering down to the part number - its worth it though because if you find the right bit you'll save a fortune.

if you can put the reg number in fine, but make sure you know which version of the car you have and if you are on the cusp of model updates

You could be so unfortunate to own a car from a defunct car maker.

take a 2009 model Saab 9-5 with all the toys - dimming, folding, dipping, memory function - all trashed so need replacement - new was £900+ and a six month wait....then greeted with the news that 'Orio' the new name for Saab parts deny the existence of the auto-dimming function. Cue memory for 1/5 of the cost from a broken-up car - but without memory. Few more pounds to get silver turned to carbon grey...

I think you'll have no problems getting the parts for an MY54 Toyota
