Yes
Just received my 2nd hand 28mm lens, popped it on the camera (400D) and it wont autofocus.

Is there anything i can clean, or check?

I flicked it to MF and it turns ok, flick it back to AF and it just makes one click, and does not turn.

I'm gutted to say the least, i've sent the seller a pm, and dont blame them, i assume something has happened in transit with some heavy handed delivery person.

Have tried all my other lenses and they all work fine.

Just wondered if anyone had come across this before??

Thanks.

Mark.

Wanted to use this today

Check whether the aperture stops down when you use the DOF preview button. This will indicate if it's a comms failure or a power problem.

Bob

If i'm on anything over 2.8 (but not including 2.8) when i press the DOF Preview it changes, if im on 2.8 it stays the same.

MF is fine, very sharp, but i need this to AF, and when i turn it on, it just makes a slight click noise, nothing else happens.

Thanks for help so far!

If the aperture stops down correctly then it sounds like a mechanical problem or a failed USM. The aperture needs power and comms and these come through the same contacts so there isn't a problem between the body and the lens.

Bob

Oh. b****r.

Is there anything i can do to find the exact problem, or even fix it?

What a pain in the ass, was looking forward to using it, looks great in mf, but i need af!

Thanks for taking the time to reply Bob, thought more people would have done the same.

105 Visitors and no one can give me any info other than Bob?

I really need to know if this is fixable, and if not, who is responsable for the repair, as i said, it was packaged well, and there was no damage on any of the packaging to suggest it was thrown around?

Help please, its ruined my day!

Can't help with the tecnicalities of the lens but if it was well packed and has no sign of being mishandled, it sounds like it was duff before it was sent. Maybe I'm a cynical old git th0:shrug:

I'm sure it will be fixable Mark but typical cost for a new USM/mechanism would be £100+. As for who's responsible...not my call but I know what I'd do if I was the seller.

Sorry it's probably not what you wanted to hear and this is maybe why no one else has responded. I understand your disappointment but it's best to stick it in a drawer for a day or two and forget it.

Bob

Sender says he checked it on his 400D before sending it out :(

What is the process for damaged goods via DHL? (i think it was DHL?)

£100+ cost more than the Lens :(

Oh dear, this is upsetting!

I will get back in touch with seller, see if there is anything we can do.

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys, much appreciated :)

If the package was in good condition when you received it then it really isn't anything worth pursuing with the courier....it's between you and the seller.

Bob

I just hoped (in vein) that there was something i was missing, press something, or twist something and all was fixed.

Oh well, live & learn.

Thanks again!

If the USM has died then the cost to repair is going to be around the same as a new lens.

£100+ to repair

£125 ish for a replacement lens.

Where did you get it from?

If off Ebay then they can sort it out for you.
Even better if you paid with Pay Pal.

Cheers

Bought it from a user off this site, have dropped them a pm, will see what they say.

I hate it when things like this happen, i always feel in the wrong, especially when its off a site like this where there is a high level of trust, and i am quite a new member.

Turn it to manual, focus it on something close then turn auto focus back on and see if it will focus on something distant. Also try cleaning the contacts with a pencil rubber (carefully) sometimes a dirty contact will cause problems. Check it in other focus modes, multi point, single point etc, jus in case somethings not compatable somewhere. Wayne

Tried all that, just the same, it just faintly clicks when i try to AF, tried the rubber (carefully), tried different focus modes, nothing.

Its such a shame, because when i spend the time to MF it, its really nice and sharp, most annoying!

Thanks for all your help, think its between me, the seller & the delivery company now though!

Merry Christmas.

Mark.

So do i, but after 3 ignored Pm's, its looking doubtfull.

Is there a process i can go through if i paid via bank transfer?

Bummer.

Having bought and now sold on this forum, I think there is an excellent level of honesty and being straight up.

Hopefully the seller will respond to your PMs if nothing else than out of courtesy to say that the lens was OK when it was shipped.

Beyond that mate I fear you are struggling unless the delivery was insured against breakage?

A month or so back I bought a lens off a member here, turned out to have a fault. Called him up and he said bring it straight back and refunded me in full, top man. Be nice if all were like that and so straight. (not that Im suggesting there is necessarily anything untoward from the seller here).

A decent seller will do the right thing.

Bearing in mind, at this time of the year not everyone is around.

Give it a day or two - could you try it on another body? Given the level of honesty here, I'd probably assume in the first instance the lens was OK before it was sent out.

I have still not accused the seller of any dodgy dealings, and after having items delivered broken from factories, i know first hand that some delivery people are not as gentle as they should be.

Have had a few pm's back when i first discovered the problem, but seller has been back on here since i have sent pm's (date & time on their profile page), and seems to be ignoring me.

I get email notification & a pop up when i have new pm, i think this is standard for most people, so i'm starting to assume the worst.

Will try it on another body when i get the chance (next week probs) but my other lenses work ok.

Thanks for the help.

Hope you get it sorted mate. How's the lens's I sold you? You had a chance to try em out and about?

Hi JayKay, the two you sold are awsome, just uploading a couple of pics, been taking pics of my dads Suzuki Bandit he has for sale!

Correct, and yesterday too, after i sent another message.

Again though, there is a chance they did not see the messages, but i have contacted the web site admin, and hope they can help me out.

£90 could be down the drain here.

sounds to me if they are ignoring messages they havent told you something from the start

hope you get sorted Mark

A couple of days that is part of the Christmas holidays might mean that the seller has not had time to respond properly even if thay have been on the forum to see the messages. I'd suggest giving the benefit of the doubt for a bit longer before jumping to conclusions.

I will do, just seeking information as to what to do if this turns into a problem.

Well if its sent RMSD then there is damage insurance is there not? Therefore if it was fine when posted, why can't a claim be made?

Relevant enough?

No, its completely spurious.

if the box was sealed and looked fine then that would be due to sellers poor packaging IMO and a claim couldnt really happen

It was sent via DHL, i will email them & see what they say.

Plus, i didnt keep the packaging, it went out with the crimbo wrapping, i didnt think to keep it, d'oh.

Exactly. Otherwise you could send any broken old tat, and try to claim damage in the post...

In any event, glass and fragile items are not covered for damage by RMSD, even if damage occured during transit.

When you signed for it, you agreed it was in good condition.

You need to sort this out with the seller - ignore anyone telling you to put in a claim with the carrier - they are talking gibberish :)

Certainly a more reasonable response than the previous arsey one, we are only trying to help and provide suggestions.

As it happens, its DHL so got to be worth checking it out.
