daddy day cares Photo52 for 2010 part 1 weeks 1 to 26

Good sharp image. I think the red background works well with this subject

I'm not absolutely sure about the colours - I think the red would work better with darker chocs. Also there are some funny shadows at the bottom left. But it all looks very appetising!

I've lost count on how much chocolate i've seen this morning. Simple idea but I think the composition need a little adjustment as to the arranging of the pieces.

I've also been having a play with the macro on my Panasonic TZ6.

Here is my shot for "close"

Andy

Indulgence, simple effective and the vignette sets it off a treat. Nice work on the vignette. Close looks pretty good, but I think the pany has over exposed it a little, but it's got some lovely detail in it all the same.

Thanks John.

I got the Panasonic to carry around with me and take to places that won't let me use the D90. I'm quite pleased with it so far.

Andy

Indulgence - choccies nicely lit, with nice blurred background and the vignette works.

Close - for me the DOF is right and the composition works, but the light is just a bit harsh. Looks like sunlight or flash. I find that the colours on flowers are better in overcast or wet conditions (water droplets can really add to a flower shot) rather than in direct light.

This week we will start with "ingredients"

A slight cheat as it was taken during the 52 but not this week. It was shot when I visited Blists Hill Victorian town. The shelves were in a small cottage and had to be shot at an awkward angle as I had no access to the room they were in.

I decided to reshoot "people" for this week.

The shot below was one of the main reasons I got the TZ6 :) I can't take an SLR into concert venues with me. I know it is a bit soft but I am pretty impressed with a P&S about 3/4 of the way back in the MEN arena without flash.

Both clickable to larger versions and more Kiss shots plus a video on my flickr.

Andy

Andy,

Just what is it with women and chocolate??????? I am sure there must be funding for me to do a PhD in "The lack of Y chromosomes and the obsession with Cocoa Products........"

Reshoot is pretty impressive for P&S that distance and no flash........

Thanks Lynton.

I shot about 200 pics that night. Some were complete carp as you would imagine. But I was seriously impressed with the keepers. I forced flash off as I knew it wouldn't do anything except waste battery power and wind me up. I set the ISO to auto and just varied the setting between 5 and 10 mp. The lower mp gives a longer zoom range so I was really just having a play to see what it could do. I was also really pleased with the video quality.

Andy

catch up time, so apologies if I'm saying things that have already been said previously:

Peace - lovely image, well composed and does give out a sense of peace so bang on theme
Indulgence - 2nd shot with the vignetting works much better IMO and the 2nd shot I've seen tonight that's made me desperate to have some chocoloate NOW!!!
Ingredients - fits the theme, but not doing a lot for me I'm afraid as theres too much going on in the image and I'm not sure where to look.
People re-shoot: This was taken with a P&S you say?? really?? wow, I would have never guessed unless you said it. Especially without flash too - you've captured the moment really well so a big well done.

I like your ingredients shot, but it is just begging to be converted to Sepia! A sepia look would really meld nicely with the period ingredients,

Phil

Ingredients is an interesting shot, with lots of details to look at. I like the way cut newspaper is used as a trim. A sepia version as Phil suggests would be fun.

The gig photo is impressive for a P&S and captures the atmosphere well.

That's a cracking gig shot Andy. Kiss eh? ;)

Ian.

Thanks guys.

I am really impressed with the little panasonic and concerts were then main reason for buying it.

I wasn't sure about the ingredients shot and it seems to have recieved mixed reactions. I will try a sepia tone and post it up.

I am now officially behind with my 52. Took until week 20 but it has happened.

I have an idea or 2 for isolation but need to do stop first :shake:

Andy

By popular demand here is a sepia toned version of "ingredients" (technically it's antique plate with the colour tweked a bit ;) I don't really like silver efex pro's take on sepia so I tend to use other presets instead)

Andy

The People reshoot is excellent Andy and with a P&S too. I think the sepia tint image for ingredients is better.

Like the sepia look - now, if you put a white fade on the edges....

Finally here is my week 20 "stop"

You wait 2 weeks for one and two come along together

Clicky as usual :)

Andy

Hi Andy,

I've been rubbish with commenting the last few weeks, so a massive catch up from me.

Ingredients is a nice enough shot, but it's not really wowing me, if you know what I mean.
The sepia re-edit gives it some lift though and definitely works a lot better IMO.

People reshoot :
I like this a lot, and for a P&S (plus given the distance and conditions) it's very impressive.

Stop : That looks like it was a fun day out and definitely a unique take on the theme. Compositionally and in terms of the theme I think the first is the stronger shot, you've caught a great expression on his face.
It looks a little bit hazy to me though, could maybe do with a bit of a contrast boost?
I like the action in the second one (the smoke has come out very well) but the b/g lets it down for me.

Isolation : I like it a lot
Great composition, good foreground interest and beautiful scenery. It absolutely screams isolation.
It would be nice to get a bit more detail through in the sky on this one. In the larger version I can see that there are clouds there. I'd have a go at adjusting the exposure in the sky and blending the two versions to get the best of both worlds.

Thanks Sarah,

some very detailed feedback there.

The stop shot was taken yesterday at Blists Hill again. The soldiers are there for the bank holiday weekend as part of Queen Victorias birthday celebrations. I had to choose that angle for the shooting pic as just to the left was a woman dressed as a Victorian nurse holding a video camera :bang:

We got back home, had something to eat and drove up to the Staffordshire moorlands to get the Isolation shot. I'll have a look at the processing when I get time.

Back to Ironbridge today as we are going to Enginuity. I might just take the Panasonic though.

I need to find time to comment on other peoples shots as well.

STOP: the first is a nicer version, imo. The image is clean and simple, the second actually says 'stopped' to me, although i do like it ;)

ISOLATION: nice work, good composition, nice detailing - only niggle would be the clouds, burn them down a bit to put more detail in i think ;)

I agree with Dade about the sky, but isolation is a really nice take on the theme.

Better, Andy. You got about as much as you could out of it.

Good job Andy...

The first for stop is shouting STOP!!!! loud and clear, which I'm sure he might have been too, a great expression. I quite like the second, but it's not really saying stop to me... although getting caught in a volley like that might cause you to stop short.

Isolation, lovely spot of scenery, and a great spot of isolation. The edit with more clouds is much better.

Thanks folks.

I agree that the first image for stop is the better one. I had asked one of the soldiers to pose like this earlier in the day. It was exactly the shot I had in mind when I found out that they would be at Blists Hill. As it turned out, the display later on involved several stances like this  This shot was from the display rather than the one I asked to model for me.

I also found the clouds easier to adjust than I thought I would. More in depth PP is something else I need to master along with flash.

Andy

the 2nd edit is much better. Really shouts Isolation. Beautiful scenery and great detail

First 'Stop' shot for me - good pose - you could also try cropping the right hand side to get id of the tent.

I really like the Isolation shots, especially with the stronger clouds. Although it is almost criminal to get rid of such a lovely landscape, I also liked the feeling of isolation this gave:

Hope you didn't mind me having a play! I'll happily remove the image if you do!

Phil

Thanks for the comments Phil.

I don't mind you having a play at all. In fact, I did try a similar crop myself. The wider shot I used won out for me this time but I see what you mean about the tighter crop.

Stop is a slight crop to lose some tents in the background. I kept what I did as I am trying to wean myself off getting the subject bang in the middle  and think about composition a bit more. A narrower depth of field may have been a better option to minimise the tents impact on the shot

Couldn't agree more about avoiding subjects in the centre of the frame on the whole, and it would have been better to have a more slender dof on the shot. Having said that, after the event it is too late to change the dof unless you can be bothered to add a load of blur to the background manually! Another possibility is to crop & selectively desaturate - I had a very quick play here:

Hi Andy, I love the processing on the clouds. It really improves the shot. Fits the theme really well.

I would have probably shaved a little bit off the bottom of the shot to bring him below the halfway mark. But, I probably would not have cropped quite as much as Phil's version. I think it needs the beautiful scenery in the background to give it context.
