Hi

I'm looking for a wide angle lens for my D90. It's for landscape shots of valleys and mountains around the Uk and Europe.

I'm toying between Tokina 12-24 or Tokina 11-16.

I'm thinking the 12-24 would be better as it's got a slightly longer zoom and only 1mm less on widest end.

Which would you guys recommend? Any other recommendations. Looking to spend about 300-400

Thanks

Not able to reccomend one over the other but check what filters you can use with each lens/ have got already as that may help in the decision.

Thanks. I've got 67mm filters at the moment but quite happy to buy a few 77mm ones for wide angle if needed.

The 12-24 was my choice as it was about 30% cheaper SH, had a better range and is the same optically as the 11-16, also f2.8 is largely irrelevant on lens used for landscapes.

I have since sold it but I have had to replace it with a Nikon 14-24mm to get better performance.

I've got the 11-16mm Tokina on my D90 and think for the money, it's a really good bit of kit.
I weighed up both the Nikkor 10-24mm and 12-24mm before purchasing it, but went for the Tokina in the end; based partially on the sheer number of excellent user reviews I read!

I had a Tokina 11-16mm for a couple of years and absolutely loved it. Great lens.

I have a Tokina 11-16, beautifully sharp at all apertures and built like a tank (for a DX lens). f/2.8 comes in handy when doing interiors, it's not always a landscape lens after all!

....and there's always the Siggy 10-20. The Tokina may be better optically though. Ken Rockwell seems to think so.

Sigma 8-16? proper UWA. I recently bought the 12-24 Nikkor from here to replace my great but slow to AF 10-24 Tamron.

However I do miss those extra 2mm on the wide end they make a huge difference at that point. So thinking of trying the 8-16 Sigma.

Thanks everyone

Not sure the budget will stretch to Nikon 10 -24

Will I notice a difference at the wide end between a 12-24 and 11-16. Obviously I can zoom more with the 12-24

I can happily recommend the Tokina, it's a cracking bit of kit.

Which Tokina. The 11-16 or 12-24 ? I'm edging towards 12-24

I have the 12-24mm and love it, I think you will use the longer end more than you think, the focal range is quite handy for landscapes I feel, although I really did think about the 11-16mm, don't underestimate the f/2.8, there are times when I would find it useful, for example with such a large depth of field even at f/2.8 (hyperfocal distance is only 2.2~ metres at 11mm and just under 5 metres at 16mm at that aperture) it would be great for my star trails where a fast lens would be useful as well as indoor shots.
I'm guessing most WA lenses have one but I find the focal distance scale on my 12-24mm invaluable, I usually stick it to the hyperfocal distance of whichever aperture I am using and shoot away when doing landscapes.

I have a large-ish set on Flickr if you want to take a look

The 12-24mm is probably one of my favourite lenses and is always in my bag or on one of my cameras, I think whichever you go for you will really love working with it for landscapes.
