I have a D90 with a 16-85mm VR lens.

I've noticed that frequently when I am composing a shot through the viewfinder and press the shutter button to autofocus, the whole view sometimes 'shifts' or drops. It's kind of hard to describe but I've experimented taking pics of linear subjects and the whole view definitely shifts downwards by a notch as it comes into focus. It's inconsistent - it doesn't always do this.

Is this normal? If not, is it likely to be camera or lens-related.

Nothing wrong with the pics coming out of the camera - very please with those. I don't remember this happening with either my D40 or D70 though.

I would have said this is the VR kicking in, but if the same lens doesn't do the same in the same situations with other bodies, I dunno

Yep, that's what it is. Posted this on the Nikon Cafe forum too and this was suggested. Have now experimented with VR on and off and I'm happy that's what it is. Never noticed the effect when using a 18-200 VR with my D40, maybe the VR on that lens wasn't working!

Thanks all.

I hired an 18-200 VR a while back for my D90 and can't say I noticed, but I do remember a similar thing when I had a Panasonic bridge camera with IS.
