Yes
tonight for the first time in anger i put the d90 to good use on the wee lads christmas panto. Taking pictures mainly , but where he was involved i took some video.

firstly you'll notice that the mic is exactly where you would comfortably grip the camera in normal picture taking mode, so straight away i'm more aware of where im resting my hand and holding the camera unnaturally, so more shake than normal straight away. portions of the video have muffled sound where i forgot not to hold the camera normally. No auto focus is also a big drawback and along with the extra camera shake my zooming attempts looks pretty ropey. Couple that with trying to focus using the rear screen(not my cup of tea either!!)

Also the hall was well lit with flourescent lighting, so white balance was easlily adjusted to suit, but i had quite bad horizontal banding scrolling up the rear screen and on looking at the video its present on that too. I'm not sure whether the banding is a trait of the D90 or DSLR video, or if i have a bad one ? if its perfectly normal, then Nikon need their arses kicked for not compensating for flourescent lighting.

Anyways, i love my D90 to bits and wouldn't part with it for anything less than a d300s :) , but from my findings, don't hand hold, don't use under flourescent lighting and dont zoom.

Probably pretty good using some funky lenses in pre arranged circumstances, under incandescent or natural light, on a tripod and without zooming (probably take a while to get the hang of zooming and focusing!)

thanks for listening !!

Am I right in thinking the D300s has improved video capabilities like stereo sound?

i think the d300s has a mic jack to plug in ext mics and also an onboard mono mic. i hope its not in the same place as the d90!!

i wait to be corrected

Also i believe the d300s can autofocus in video mode?

Although you can't do too long videos on D90. I wonder if that's changed on the D300s?

Unfortunately the length of video's on the D300s is crippled as well to 5mins at 720p but if you record at VGA (640x480) then you can record a lot longer.

Hopefully this is something that can be changed by a firmware update... here's to hoping :p

Is there potential for a firmware upgrade on the D300s to take it to 1024p? Is is that impossible with the hardware?

has anybody else noticed the horizontal banding under flourescent lighting?

yep, tried it in my office at work and its present. Its a sales gimmick, and i dont use it, i found the mic in a stupid place for handheld and to be honest i forget it even does video...

yes i`ve noticed the banding too, nothing can be done about it.

It can also be picked up in normal photo shooting mode too, to avoid it you have to slow the shutter speed down.

It's to do with duty - recording time is limited so it is classed as a stills camera.

The lesson we can all learn from this is, if you want to take video get a video camera:thumbs:
