Hi.

Took some aircraft shots yesterday but on continuous shooting mode my D90 will only buffer 13 shots. Is that down to the SD card? I have an 8th Sandisk SDHC card in there. Not sure what class it is. If I were to buy a class 10 or 2 SDHC would the buffer size increase?

Thanks

Thanks. My 13 was just shooting jpeg too. New card it is.

Whilst the card "speed" governs the transfer rate between camera and card the buffer space is a function of the camera software and memory space. So whilst having a very rapid transfer rate will / may have a small effect on buffer space ie the faster you can extract the more you can fill in it will be small, the ultimate restriction is down to the camera.

A 13 shot buffer sounds about right if you`re shooting any combination of RAW + JPEG. I have a class 10 card and that`s about what I get.
Lose the RAW shooting and use the finest and largest JPEG file and mine will shoot forever or until it hits the arbitrary 100 shot limit.
The above applies to maximum burst rate which is about 4 to 4 1/2 fps.

Thanks. No the 13 shot was just on fine jpg. No raw as well.

I normally use 2GB Ultra or Extreme cards, I have just bought a 'normal' 8Gb SDHC card and the first thing i noticed was the buffer and transfer rate was down considerably.
I suppose you get what you pay for.

Pretty much same as what I've had with my (older) D80 the Ultra & Extreme cards are fine but a class 2 card is a nightmare if I need rapid shots in succession

Do a quick test of your card. Put the camera on single point, Af-S, manual focus, JPG small, basic, high speed continuous shooting. Then mash down the shutter for a few seconds. It should blast of 2 dozen shots in no time with no issues providing the card is fast enough. Next do it on JPG fine/large and see if it has a holdup.

For my D90, small/basic and high speed will keep cranking them out all day with no issues on a class 6 card. (until the card is full of course, which is 29k shots). I know you probably don't shoot small basic, (I don't) but it will start to tell you where the bottlenecks of your gear are.

thanks
