I just had a look at these on amazon, they say they for d700, do they fit the d90?
 
I am thinking of trading my d3100 for the d90 and getting the non focus 50 prime lens

Are there any other cheap non focus lens that are worth getting

I have a old non focus 28 - 100 and would like a 70 - 300 or 55 - 200

or does everyone still but the new s lens and turn of the af on the lens

Really just looking at money side of things as I can get a new body for 450 or secondhand for 350. I cannot see classifieds here yet, and sell my d3100 for £300ish
 
hi everyone im the proud owner of a D90 im after some advice on what editing program is best to use please. This camera was my brothers he only had it for 18 months before he updated and offered me the D90 i think at a bargain price. I am realy impressed with the iso compaired to the bridge cameras i have had before thanks for any help Bob:)
 
Just my opinion, but if you're shooting in Raw, you can't go wrong with the Nikon View NX that comes bundled with the camera (and is available as a free download from the Nikon site). All the in-camera settings can be changed, you can adjust curves, crop, straighten, etc. Everything you need to get a picture looking as good as it can. I only resort to photoshop if I want to mess about and be a bit 'arty'.

Having a little problem with my grip when i use the nikon bateries it's fine,but when i use the plastic holder for aa type batteries it shows that the batteries are flat and does not work,even when i have put new batteries in to the unit

Any ideas ?

Have you tried setting the different battery types in the camera menu?

Custom setting menu, d12 - choice of AA alkaline, Ni-MH, lithium and Ni-Mn.
 
Just checked and that's ok using lithium batteries and grip is set up for them,so i am not too sure what's wrong : - (

Gents can you please give me some advice i have a metz 44 AF-1 Flash and would like to use it off my camera, i set the camera up to use the flash as a commander but do i set the flash up as a slave unit or something else

Anyone have any issues with getting their function button to work.....

I've set the button up to go to "My Menu" but when I press the function button it does nothing.

I'm aware that setting the function button to other settings results in you having to push the button and rotate the wheel at the same time etc but surely not to just access My Menu??
 
Guys, do the red lines in the viewfinder seem distracting to you / stand out?

You can assign the Function button to go to the 'top item in My Menu'. Do you actually have items in My Menu?

It depends on the background at the time. The optician does that test where you have to say whether the green circle or the red circle stands out more - perhaps your eyes are more sensitive to red :shrug:

Yes, there are entries in My Menu but nothing happens when the function button is pressed when assigned with the "My Menu" option or anything else for that matter....
 
Don't know what I did but it's now started working.......

I've been playing around and trying a few different configurations with this button for over a week now and then all of a sudden, voila !!!!!
 
Does anyone else have this issue: The green display within the viewfinder has basically died, or has gone mad! It just displays random digits now, not what it should.

I've not had this issue but it is relatively well documented on the net. All reported cases seem to result in the camera having to go back to Nikon for repair im afraid. :'(
 
Cheers. I'll have to live with it in that case, it's a few years old and I'm hoping to move to FX soon. I will be keeping it as a back up though, but if I have to pay up to get the issue fixed, it's probably not worth it. I can use the top LCD to check where I'm at, but it does mean taking my eye away from the VF.

From a D40 I've had for 4 years! Fairly happy with the ISO performance so far, although I haven't had a chance to test it full yet.

If you shoot RAW then it makes no difference, unless you use Nikons capture NX for raw processing. If you shoot JPEG then it may be worthwhile as it seems to do a good job.

None of the in camera settings will have an effect on the RAW file. The RAW is basically a bit for bit dump from the sensor to memory card. The camera settings do however have an effect on the preview JPEG embedded in the RAW file. This preview JPEG what you see when reviewing your images on the camera, so even if you shoot in RAW the image that you see on the camera will have the camera settings applied. Basically if you shoot RAW then don't rely on preview image to give you the whole truth.

Thank you. I knew the preview was a render of the added effects in the camera, just wasn't sure about the noise reduction. Thank you for clearing that up.

Another quick question regarding the D90: Which button do you use for changing ISO when in manual mode? Do you use the ISO button or assign the function button to change the ISO?

I find it a bit cumbersome having to take the camera away from my face to press the ISO button and then use the control dial to change it. On my D40 I had it set to the function button and found it easier and quicker.
 
On the D40 ISO is the obvious choice for the function button, however on the D90 I have the function button set to change the AF-area mode

I've no problem with using the rear button to set ISO as I typically set the ISO once for the conditions that I'm shooting in, so generally I'm not continually adjusting ISO.

Actually a quick glance at the D90 PDF manual appears to show that you can't set the function button to adjust ISO - something I've just confirmed on the camera itself.

We need to qualify statements like this. If you are using Nikon's editing software (ViewNX2 or Capture NX2) then the camera setting WILL be applied to your RAW file but if you're using 3rd party software (e.g. Adobe, paintShop, etc) then they won't be ... actually the 3rd party software guesses what the setting were and applies that unless you specifically stop that in the preferences.

I did, in the post I made just before the one you quoted. However to clarify, the RAW file never has anything done to it. It is never altered in any way, even by capture NX. Any settings that are applied to it during post processing, and that includes the camera settings, are done during the conversion of the RAW into some other image format.

That said all RAWs need some kind of basic post processing done before you can even view the image, and the image editor of your choice will do the initial bit automatically.

By the way even with Capture NX it is possible to turn off any in camera applied settings.
 
Andy, apologies I missed that post (or mis-read it) :)

Of course you're quite right that even Nikon software doesn't alter the RAW file, I was trying to convey the difference in what you see on screen between Nikon "treated" images and those "treated" by other applications. Should have explained myself better.
 
Just ordered a D90 body for the bargain price of £230 from Jessops clearance, very chuffed and cannot wait to get my hands on it, what are peoples first lens recommendations for £100-150?

The 18-105 mm lens (as found in the D90 kit (is a reasonable starting point. You could get a 50mm AF-D F1.8 prime for that money butt could prove limiting. Your budget might go further if you look at second hand lens.

Hi. I bought a 50 f1.8d. Cheap cheerful and good fun! I started out with the 18-105. Then added a 50mm then the 70-300 vr. Later added an 85 f1.4, 70-200 f2.8, 17-50 f2.8 and a 35 f1.8. Also dabbled with a 105 f2.8 macro.

I'd say, from my experience, a toss up between the 50 and 35mm f1.8. Both excellent on the d90!
